Chicago PD - The Cases That Need To Be Solved - Review

“We solve the cases that need to be solved.”

This was a heavy episode (something I feel like I’ve said a lot recently…I think we are due for a lighter episode!). I always love the episodes that feature Antonio, and it was nice to catch up with him and Diego. The series kicked off with the kidnapping of Diego, so it feels that Antonio is really at the heart of this. Side note: is it just me or has Diego aged way more than he should have? Wasn’t he a small child just three years ago?!

Anyway, aside from Antonio, there wasn’t a lot of personal story this week. The entire case in a nutshell could be labeled mistaken identity, which is heartbreaking because it claimed the life of a nine year old boy.

Here’s a rundown of the case…

There are warring gangs in Chicago. When a nine year old boy is found shot in the head, the Intelligence Unit takes a close look at the boy’s father, Brian Johnson, who has old ties to the West Side Posse. It seems pretty clear early on that Brian is not responsible for the death of his son, but his desperation to find the killer elevates the tensions between the G-Park Lords and the West Side Posse, rival gangs.

Lindsay and Halstead investigate a suspect, Jesse, who is part of the G-Park Lords. He’s adamant about not being involved, but something’s not quite right. Meanwhile, Olinsky and Atwater talk with Miles, Brian’s brother. I didn’t know what to make of him the entire time. I was suspicious of him, but I desperately didn’t want it to be him. Either way, he knows something.

Later, Halstead finds a Bryan Johnson, a member of the Two Threes, as a likely target for the G-Park Lords. Meaning, the G-Park Lords targeted the wrong Brian/Bryan’s son. Bryan is a “hitter” and was in G-Park territory the day before Noah’s murder.

The team tracks down Colin, another suspect. He’s definitely a bad guy and is clearly involved. Thanks to Jesse’s cousin, the team learns it was a group of three that planned and carried out Noah’s murder: Jesse, Colin, and a guy named Jordan. Apparently, Bryan Johnson (not Noah’s father) raped Jordan’s sister, so killing his son was retribution. Unfortunately, they went after the wrong Brian.

Miles learned the truth as well, as Olinsky and Atwater find him at Jordan’s home, gun in his face. I’m glad Miles wasn’t involved, that would have been terrible. I’m also glad he put the gun down.

It’s one thing to see a grown man or woman dead because of gang violence. But a kid? It’s just painful. There was nothing more heartbreaking than seeing that poor mother finding out her son was dead. I did love seeing Noah’s parents come together at the end, but it was nevertheless a tough case to watch.

The hour ended with a beautiful candlelight service for Noah, in which many of the Chicago family we know was in attendance. Antonio brought Diego, and after their bickering at the start of the hour, it was nice to see them come together.

Elsewhere…

We did get a bit about Mouse and Halstead. It was brief, but yet another clue into Halstead’s past. We know there’s something that happened during his time in Afghanistan that he doesn’t talk about. Will brought it up briefly with Erin (though we never heard what it was) and in this episode, Mouse brings up something similar, it seems, that happened during their time overseas. Halstead is quick to cut him off with, “I don’t want to talk about.” But Jay, I want to know!
