Banshee - Something Out of the Bible - Advance Preview + Teasers

Last year’s season kicked off smack bang in the middle of the action, with the Banshee Sheriff’s Department kicking ass and taking names in the hunt to take down those who had slain one of their own. Two long years have passed since that night, however, and the opening scenes this time round highlight just some of the changes that have happened during that time.

It’s a lone Brock, in the Sheriff job he’s always dreamed of, who is following up the latest lead in the serial murder case that’s burning a hole in his desk. He’s not sure where the trail will lead him, or how he’ll deal with the situation once he discovers what it is that awaits him, but one thing is for sure, he will remain steadfast and true to his mission to clean up his town. It’s great to see all that Brock has achieved in his new role, although it will take some time for parts of the story to be told through the flashbacks it’s obvious from the start that he has worked hard since taking over from Hood.

Bringing together the new, and considerably larger, force of officers after everyone from the Cadi had left for various reason – or as in Bunker’s case, forced out of action for a few months – is also no mean feat. The new station is eons ahead of the old one when it comes to technology, staffing levels and resources, yet I have to admit that it does lack the character the Cadi had, feeling a tad cold and unfamiliar. Though the Sheriff’s office is the room we’ll be seeing the most of I feel, which Brock has certainly attempted to stamp his character onto. It feels more intimate and more like the space we’re used to seeing our officers hang out in when they are being brutally honest about their situations, so that works well as a compromise.

As for Hood, I’m not sure I should tease too much about his whereabouts over the last couple of years. He has left Banshee, more or less, and his flashbacks will reveal much about him over the coming weeks, but for now I will say that he has pretty much hit rock bottom. Antony Starr continues to astound me with how much passion and depth he brings to the table. Hood’s tough guy exterior hides a fragile, easily broken soul, both of which Starr exemplifies to their fullest degree. A nightmare montage shown this week that shows his meltdown after the end of last season is, quite simply, sublime.

If you have been following the promotional material closely thus far, you will not be surprised to hear that Carrie has her own way of dealing with the shit life has thrown her way. Deserted by everyone, either through death, kidnap, abandoned due to not being able to cope, or court order, she is alone. Her fortress, as Ivana Milicevic told me during an interview last week, is an old, battered-down house she has bought and is in the process of fixing up. If she can restore the property into a home, staying away from trouble in order to have her children returned to her, maybe her life will also be mended along the way.

Failing that, she has another, darker, coping method to help her through the bad times. Proctor’s DA may well be wrapped around his finger, forced into carrying out whatever policies the new Mayor wants implemented, but neither of them banked on a vigilante picking up their slack. Someone inside the new Sheriff’s Department is feeding Carrie information on who is escaping justice, allowing her to deliver her own brand of punishment once they are back on the streets.

Chris Coy is perfectly cast, his portrayal of Calvin Bunker’s duel personality is a joy to watch
