The Originals - Heart Shaped Box - Review

Feb 20, 2016

This week in the Originals, Aurora lured Klaus and Elijah into a trap by kidnapping Freya and burying her alive. Hayley tried to teach Cami how to defend herself. Davina got a chance to talk to Kol and discovered that the key to unsiring a vampire is the heart of an unsired vampire. This led the Strix to Hayley. Davina and Kol managed to take the Sisters out long enough for Marcel to suggest an alternative plan, using Jackson’s heart. Klaus and Elijah managed to save Freya. Aurora and Aya are planning to team up.

Favorite relationship: Freya and Klaus’ relationship is one of my favorites on the show, mostly because they’re so similar. I loved the scene where he tells her she’s a part of their family. They got off to a very rocky start so it’s great to see how far they’ve come. I mean yeah, they still bicker but Klaus does that with all his siblings.
Best couple: So Nate was back again as Kol, convincing me more than ever that he’ll be back before the end of the season. Somehow I can’t imagine that these guest appearances won’t lead up to something. I’m not entirely sure why, but I actually like Kol and Davina together more now than last season. It could have something to do with the fact that, while Daniel did a great job with the role, Nate was always Kol for me. I hope his next appearance isn’t too far away.
Most improved: Cami made some actual progress this week. While she’s not quite there yet, at least she didn’t get on my nerves as much as she did last week. I completely agree with Hayley that her dark objects will only get her so far. She needs to learn how to defend herself. I’m not entirely sure what the writers are planning to do with her though. So far they’ve mostly kept her out of the major storylines. I hope she starts working with the Original siblings soon, rather than being on the sidelines.

Biggest disappointment: I was so impressed with Marcel last week. I had such high expectations for him as the new leader of the Strix. But it doesn’t seem like much has changed. Aya still calls the shots, leading me to believe that she did the exact same thing when Tristan was in charge. Marcel better watch his back.

Least favorite character: I think Aurora has outstayed her welcome. I had expected a bigger showdown with Klaus and Elijah. I can’t believe she just stood there pointing a gun at Elijah and did absolutely nothing. All because she wanted Klaus to see her kill him. Honestly, if I’m pointing a gun at someone who could easily overpower me at any moment (because let’s face it, all it would’ve taken was one moment of not paying attention) I’m going to pull the trigger as fast as I possibly can. I’m 99% sure Aya will get sick off her by the end of next week’s episode.

Honorable mention: It seems every Original sibling got mentioned this week. Rebekah was referenced to briefly, but also Finn. He saved Freya from that pendant by using the blood from her wound to signal Klaus. The relationship between the siblings in this family is my favorite part of this show. Despite the differences Freya and Finn had towards the end, they will always be there for one another. They’re as close as Rebekah and Klaus are. Unfortunately they we don’t get to see that much of their relationship. I hope that changes soon.

I would’ve done it differently: I really liked the twist that they had to use the heart of an unsired vampire. I think it was a good explanation why it hasn’t happened in the past millennium. However, I would’ve dragged this out into the next episode. I would’ve loved to see a Strix vs. Originals face off with the family really fighting together. I didn’t mind how it was handled but it just felt a little quick to me.

Prophecy speculation: So the prophecy says that they will all “fall”, but that doesn’t necessarily mean death. The “by family” part was fulfilled when Elijah daggered Rebekah. Does that mean that the “by foe” part has now been fulfilled as well. Elijah went down hard when Aurora shot him. He came very close to dying. Would that be enough? If so Klaus is the only one left, leaving only “by friend”. That could be a lot of people including Marcel and Cami.
Best quotes: Freya: “I see we’re in for another ‘normal’ Mikaelson breakfast.” Elijah: “Niklaus for heaven’s sake, release the poor creature.” *Klaus drops the man* Elijah: “That’s not what I meant.”
Klaus: “You are my sister, Freya. And you are a part of this family, always and forever.”
Klaus: “It seems there’s no shortage of those who stand against our family. Let’s kill them all.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
