Shadowhunters - Moo Shu to Go - Review

Feb 11, 2016

This week Shadowhunters centered mostly on Alec and Clary. When Maryse Lightwood arrived she put Alec on babysitting duty and assigned Izzy and Jace to talk to Meliorn. Clary, of course, ran away. Once Alec caught up with her she convinced him to take her and Simon to her old apartment. There they found a mysterious box but were interrupted when Clary and Simon were kidnapped by the werewolves. Jace blamed Alec. Alec, Jace and Izzy rescued Clary and Simon and were aided by Luke who, after killing the former alpha, became the new alpha. At the end of the episode the team split up and Clary, Jace and Simon took Luke to Magnus’ because of his injuries.

Favorite character(s): As usual, the Lightwood siblings were again my favorites this week. Alec seems to be the only one able to think objectively when it comes to Clary. Izzy doesn’t follow her as blindly as Jace, but she still has her reasons for being so willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. It can’t be easy to always be surrounded by boys, I’m sure she’s glad to make a female friend. Like she said last week, she’s also craving some more adventure, a little change in the rhythm. But judging from both Alec and Izzy’s expression at the end of the episode, I think they’re reaching their limit of Clary drama. They did not look happy.
Least favorite character(s): Both Clary and Jace really got on my nerves this week. I don’t remember being this annoyed by the book versions (or even the movie versions) but these two seem to bother me a lot. I get that Clary wants to save her mother, but she seems to completely ignore the fact that her actions get other people (the Lightwoods) in trouble. And Jace is so smitten with her that he’s doing the exact same thing. He keeps blaming Alec for losing Clary while he should be pissed at Clary for running away. He should know, more than anyone, the pressure Alec and Izzy are under from their mother. Because he’s not a Lightwood, he’s not held be same standards. He can get away with more while others get blamed.

Mother of the year (not): I doubt anyone’s heart was warmed by Maryse. She’s pretty hard on her children and we didn’t really see the reason for this. I assume this will be explained next week in the flashback episode. There’s a reason the Lightwoods are watched more closely by the Clave than other Shadowhunter families. Mistakes were made in the past and now Maryse wants to make absolutely sure no more scandals follow.

Least interesting storyline: I’m happy that the ‘werewolves pursuing Clary’ storyline is now (hopefully) over. Now that Luke is the alpha, Clary will probably be off limits. This whole storyline of not knowing Luke’s true loyalties kind of pissed me off. I preferred how this was resolved in the movies, quickly. There are already enough questionable characters on this show. I hope that now we’ll be able to see more of the family relationship between Clary, Luke and, later, Jocelyn.

Most interesting storyline: I found it very surprising that no one noticed the changes in Simon. Alec did seem to realize something was off but he was so busy running after Clary that he didn’t have time to make sense of it. But considering the magnitude of these changes I doubt it’ll take long before someone takes notice. A mundane being stronger than Shadowhunters is bound to raise some eyebrows. I honestly can’t wait for this storyline to really kick off. That way Simon will get a more important storyline than being Clary’s best friend (who happens to be in love with her).

Honorable mention: I figure I’m going to add this column every week. This week, Maryse mentioned Max. I mentioned last week that I can’t wait to see him and his relationship with Alec and Izzy. I can’t help but wonder if Maryse is as hard on him as she is on her other children. Idris was also mentioned again this week. I hope we’ll get to see a glimpse of it soon on the show. I’m very curious about the writers’ vision of the city.

Best quotes: Simon: “After me.”
Izzy: “I’m getting seriously tired of saving your life.” Simon: “I am not.”
Magnus: “Would you like to go out for a drink sometime?” Alec: “That sounds fun.”

That’s it for this week. Check again next week for an all new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
