'NEW GUYS, NEW LIES' REVIEW
I'm actually getting a little freaked out by this new A. The whole "hiding in plain sight" thing, I mean, way back when, Mona was kind of "hiding in plain sight" so it's not like this is a new thing, but considering this new A was hiding in a freaking old man's mask on, and stood outside Aria's house - that was just freaky. It's also cool that this new A uses emojis. I love the police pig ones, I wish I had them on my phone. Anyway, are we calling this new A "Uber A"? Is this the one? THE one. The last, ultimate one? I feel like they're slowly building this one up so there's no sudden sense of urgency just yet, but it's creeping me out that they haven't really made a big move yet. Like what are they waiting for? It's so suspenseful and it makes me very apprehensive of what's to come.
"When the police come calling, you better not squeal about me."
Hanna did the "ssshhh" in this one, which was awesome. It's like Sshh Roulette. I think it's only Aria left to do it in this new version, then I wonder if it will go back to Alison and do it in order, or if they'll change it up every week. Anyway, Hanna had a very honest week. I think she did all the right moves surprisingly, and it was a nice surprise to see her be honest with Jordan and then get the lawyer involved. I guess she really felt backed into a corner over the tape, and hopefully it's the last of it - unless Uber A involves Ashley. How cool was it to see Mama Marin help her daughter like that. She was pretty bad-ass in helping cover Hanna's tracks. The Jordan romance is blossoming nicely and so far I like this new pairing the most: "With Jordan I don't spin and I don't twirl. He keeps me grounded and I like how that feels." Aww Han. I liked how understanding he was and how he helped in getting the lawyer; it was so sweet. Who else felt a little bitterness towards Spaleb from Hanna? I believe she really is trying to wrap her head around it, but like most fans, she just can't get there yet.
"I guess she is better than you. He will never put a ring on your finger."
Speaking of Spaleb, I really do want to like it and I think with time, I think I could. But I really don't see them as endgame, so I really don't want to get invested just for it to not happen in the end, you know? I don't cringe when I see them together, and I like them as friends for sure, but give me time guys, I'm sure it will be fine. We also had more interaction with Toby this week, which was awkward to say the least. At least Caleb came clean with him, but Toby has Yvonne now, but you can tell he really yearns for Spencer. It's quite the shame, though I got bored of Spoby a long time ago. It's refreshing to get this break from them. I wonder if more tension will happen if Hanna finds out Spencer lied about where she was - we all knew you slept with Caleb, Spence, you don't need to lie about it. I hope more drama erupts between Spencer and Hanna when they become more honest with their feelings. I also liked that Spencer got on pretty well with Yvonne too - this really is Pretty Mature Little Liars now.
"I'm telling you guys that bitch wasn't stockholmed."
Emily's usual storyline routine of romantic interests came around again. Though to be fair to the poor girl, she was kind of forced into it by Aria. Nevertheless, I quite like Sabrina, and the chemistry she had with Emily during their little coffee date was very pleasant. It made a nice change from Emily's doom and gloom: "I'll step out on the ledge with you." Quite sweet, but girl you barely know the girl. One more cappuccino would have been dangerous. The only bits I really loved with Emily, though, was the moment the "old man" was standing at the window, and when Sabrina catches her putting the loft key back. I love when they get caught in the act, and it will be interesting to see how she talks her way into forgiveness. "Save your lies for someone who has time to hear them" - major burn Sabrina.
"I think she knows."
And finally, Aria. She was a lot more pro-active this week when she isn't writing someone else's books or spending time with her new boyfriend at work. I always love the more physical Aria who wants to get straight to the bottom of answers. After A texts them the murder weapon, which is a 9-iron golf club, Aria thinks it could be Ezra. It was a good idea of hers to make sure it wasn't Ezra's, and that way they would be prepared whether it was his or not. But the sudden re-appearance of Byron had me asking questions long before Aria did. He's barely ever in it, so this week it was just strange how he just showed up. Very shady. It was a nice little twist that it would be Byron who ended up on the suspects list with his 9-iron missing. It also meant we got Ella back for a flashback - a very strange flashback, might I add. It seems like Ella was sympathising with Charlotte, which I kind of was too when I heard her story, but Aria is her daughter. After the torture and pain she put her through, I was kind of Team Byron in that argument. Strange though, definitely strange.
EPISODE VERDICT
This was another good episode, with things slowly ticking along. The continuous absence of Alison is starting to grate on me, especially since we are supposed to be working towards that final scene in the mid-season finale that featured Alison. They need to utilise her more. I liked the relationships in this episode and how some are forming while others seem to be breaking down. A lot of awkwardness. I liked the A stuff, and the old man was creepy as f*ck. I hope more serious drama starts to happen though, because while I'm still enjoying it, if we keep getting slower episodes, things could get boring. Fast.
EPISODE AWARDS
Prettiest Little Liar: Aria, for getting to the bottom of things with the potential murder weapon and finding out her father's is missing.
Boyfriend Material: Jordan, for standing by Hanna's side after her honesty.
Biggest Asshole: The "old man" A. I feel deceived, I believed it was an old man.
Most Sympathetic Character: I'm going to say Sabrina, for the sheer fact that she really felt deceived by Emily.
Favourite Episode Pairing: Hanna and Jordan
Best Line: "It's happening again, isn't it?" - Spencer. Chill down my spine.
Funniest Line: "I'm telling you guys that bitch wasn't stockholmed" - Emily.
Best Moment: Ashley reveals she has the hard drive. Yaaasssss.
Saddest Moment: Hanna being honest with Jordan, thinking he would leave her.
Creepiest Moment: The old man standing outside Aria's house with Emily unaware (as usual).
Shadiest Moment: Hanna on the phone to Spencer.
Funniest Moment: There really wasn't one in this episode.
Damned Disappointment: Really? Alison is "out of town". That's always their excuse.
Biggest Question Mark Award: Who's going to realise that Byron, Ezra and Sara have nothing to do with Charlotte's death? Because we all know whoever they accuse, never did it.
Biggest ReveAl: The "old man" mask.
