EXCLUSIVE: Walton Goggins has joined the cast of Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the third installment of the 20th Century Fox film franchise that is now set for a February 9, 2018 release. The pic had been delayed after an injury to star Dylan O’Brien, but now production is on track to kick off in South Africa.
In the third pic, based on James Dashner’s third novel in his trilogy, O’Brien’s Thomas embarks on a mission to find a cure to a deadly disease knows as the “Flare.” The versatile Goggins, who was long-sought for the pic, will play Lawrence, an unusual and dangerous character who is part-revolutionary, part-anarchist, and a voice for the voiceless people.

29th July 2016 - Production Restarts February 2017
EXCLUSIVE: Production on The Maze Runner: The Death Cure starring Dylan O’Brien will start up again in February, sources tell Deadline. The production had shut down after O’Brien was sidelined after being seriously injured on the set in March while filming the third installment of the popular YA franchise and was hospitalized with injuries to his face.
The production was supposed to start up on May 9 but that was postponed, as was the release date, to give O’Brien more time to convalesce. Fox had pushed the film’s release date from February 17, 2017, to January 12, 2018.
O’Brien was said to have fallen off a set that was made to look like the back of a train and fractured either his cheekbone or orbital socket.
The crew went their separate ways after the second postponement, but now schedules have been worked out to move forward early next year, albeit in a new location. Maze Runner: The Death Cure still will be directed by Wes Ball. The script by T.S. Nowlin was adapted from one of the series of the popular books by James Dashner. Wyck Godfrey, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman are the producers.

5th June 2016 - Release Date Pushed to 2018
A month after shutting down production on the film, Fox has officially rescheduled the theatrical release of Maze Runner: The Death Cure to January 12, 2018.
Originally set for release February 17, 2017, production on the film was temporarily stopped March 28 after star Dylan O’Brien was injured during the filming of a stunt. Conflicting reports as to the full extend of O’Brien’s injuries soon emerged, but on April 29 Fox halted the production indefinitely to give him time to recover. No date for when production will resume has been announced.

29th April 2016 - Production Shut Down Indefinitely for Dylan O'Brien's Recovery
Fox's The Maze Runner: The Death Cure has shut down production for the foreseeable future because its star's injuries from an accident on set are more severe than initially expected.
Dylan O'Brien was injured while shooting the YA action-adventure sequel on March 18. Sources say he was in a harness on top of a moving vehicle when he was pulled off the vehicle unexpectedly and hit by another vehicle. A report from WorkSafeBC described his injuries as including a "concussion, facial fracture and lacerations."
Production on the film was shut down in March in order for the actor to recover, with Fox believing it would take only a few weeks and scheduling a May 9 resumption. However, sources now say that cast and crew have been sent home, and a new start date will depend on O'Brien's recovery and the ability to reassemble the large cast and crew. Insiders say O'Brien's injuries are more severe than first believed.
"His injuries are very serious, and he needs more time to recover," said O’Brien’s publicist, Jennifer Allen.
"The resumption of principal photography on Maze Runner: The Death Cure has been further delayed to allow Dylan O’Brien more time to fully recover from his injuries. We wish Dylan a speedy recovery and look forward to restarting production as soon as possible," said a statement from Fox.
The Fox project was slated for release on Feb, 17, 2017, but because of the lengthy delay, the film likely won't be able to make that date.
Wes Ball is directing the third film in the trilogy, in which O'Brien's character, Thomas, embarks on a mission to find a cure to a deadly disease known as the "Flare.

UPDATE with details of injury: Dylan O’Brien, star of 20th Century Fox’s Maze Runner franchise, was injured on the set of Maze Runner: The Death Cure today in Vancouver, BC. Fox said he was sent to the hospital immediately but did not offer details. O’Brien apparently fell off the back of a set that was supposed to look like the back of a train and fractured either his cheekbone or orbital socket (still not clear on the details) when he fell on his face. The production has been shut down “while he recovers,” the studio says.
Fox has set a February 17, 2017 release for the latest pic in the franchise based on James Dashner’s YA series. No word yet on whether that will have to change, but Fox did put out a statement:
Dylan O’Brien was injured yesterday while filming ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ in Vancouver, Canada. He was immediately transferred to a local hospital for observation and treatment. Production on the film will be shut down while he recovers. Our thoughts go out to Dylan for a full and speedy recovery.
O’Brien also stars on MTV’s series Teen Wolf, which is currently on hiatus.

16th September 2015 - Wes Ball Confirmed as Director
Wes Ball has confirmed that he’s returning to direct “The Maze Runner: The Death Cure.”
Ball directed last year’s “The Maze Runner” and “The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials,” which opens this weekend. The films are based on James Dashner’s dystopian science fiction series. Shooting for “The Death Cure,” the third and final film in the Fox franchise, is slated to begin in December.
“Ultimately our goal is to create an awesome three-movie trilogy,” Ball told Variety at Tuesday night’s red carpet premiere of “The Scorch Trials” in New York. “Not many people have done that and now I have the opportunity to do that. I am directing the third film and we’ve already been busy preparing and working on the final conclusion of this saga.”

With a box office take of over $340M worldwide, The Maze Runner got off to a great start last fall becoming another film franchise for 20th Century Fox. Now, with two films already under their belt, word comes that T.S. Nowlin, who co-scripted the first movie and scripted the second installment, just sealed a deal to pen a third. All are based on James Dashner’s bestselling YA series.

9th October 2014 - Wes Ball Won't Split Film If He Returns to Direct
Well Wes Ball is currently adapting The Maze Runner book series into movies, and the first film was very successful (over $200 million worldwide) and warrants a follow up. The Scorch Trials will hit theaters on September 18th 2015, with plans to hopefully complete the young-adult post-apocalyptic science fiction trilogy of books by James Dashner. Now director Wes Ball has come out publicly saying he isn’t planning to split the third book into two films.
