Chicago Med - Reunion - Review
4 Feb 2016
Chicago Med MR ReviewsFirst off, congrats to Chicago Med on the season two renewal! Not that I was worried, because please. This show is fantastic.
We kickoff the hour with the return of Natalie, one month after Owen was born. She wastes no time in taking on a case; a girl named Michelle comes in with severe breathing issues and an overbearing father. Michelle’s breathing gets bad enough that Natalie prepares to put a tube in her throat. As her father is shoved out of the room though, Michelle’s breathing returns to normal. Odd.
Michelle’s father, Henry, is always prepared and keeps Michelle’s medical history with them at all times. Will volunteers to help Natalie sort through the files and work the case with her. While I am completely on board the Will/Natalie ship, it was nice change to see them interact more as colleagues and even argue a bit this episode. Will doesn’t agree with Henry’s Mitochondrial Disease diagnosis, and the hour turns a bit into Natalie vs. Will and Daniel.
Daniel decides observation is the way to go, and plants a camera so he can observe without being seen. While the tape does reveal odd behavior (Michelle is fine when her dad isn’t in the room and in a terrible condition when he is). Natalie is furious about the tape because Michelle is her patient, which is understandable. But Sharon’s anger is a bit hypocritical. “I oughta haul you ass up in front of the ethics committee…” Um, Sharon. You literally broke federal law last week and could have lost your job and gone to jail. Pot, meet kettle? I think so.
Anyhow, Daniel believes it’s conversion disorder and medical child abuse (unintentional). Basically, Henry’s wife died and Michelle “misunderstood” his grief and desire to protect her from it. It’s a terribly sad situation, as Henry never intended to cause Michelle any harm. He lets go of the anger near the end of the hour and breaks down, with Daniel there to talk him through everything. Daniel’s bedside manner is off the charts, y’all. He has such a way with words.
Michelle will be okay, and in the end, Henry finally cooperates. I wouldn’t say Will and Natalie were at odds at the end of the hour, but they weren’t in agreement either. And if the promos for next week are any indication, these two are going to continue to butt heads. They can’t always agree, I suppose! And who doesn’t love a little drama?
Elsewhere…
How cute are Sarah and Joey (adorably nerdy tech guy)? Also, how cute are Sarah and April? This is a new friendship I didn’t expect but instantly loved. After a little hiccup (dating app woes), Sarah and Joey are on the right track. But back to April and Sarah. I like this friendship. They have great chemistry but I also think Sarah would be the perfect person for April to turn to should she decide to go to med school.
Meanwhile, April and Sarah treat a college girl, Sloane, who is plastered. This case had Sarah opening up a bit more than we’ve seen, and I’m starting to really like her character. She’s kind of funny! She bonds with Sloane and best friend Madeline, who is pre-med. The good news for Sloane is that Sarah discovers she has Lyme Disease. The bad news is that Madeline finds out Sloane slept with her boyfriend. “I hope you get an STD and it kills you!” Yikes.
A foreign prince visits Chicago Med for heart surgery performed by the “King” of Chicago Med, Dr. Downey. During one of Connor’s surgeries, Dr. Downey gets uncomfortably up close and personal for no apparent reason. Later, Dr. Downey has Connor semi-join the case, mostly it seems because he can speak Arabic. But then, the prince speaks perfect English so God only knows what Dr. Downey is up to with Connor. And then the tea scene? What in the world? Was it entertaining? Duh. Do I understand it? Not even slightly.
Chief Petty Officer Mason comes into the hospital and knows Ethan from time served in the Navy. Hooray for some Ethan backstory! Things aren’t looking good for Mason, as Ethan discovers Mason has cancer. Also, I never want to hear “Chicago Med handshake” ever again. Ethan is furious when Mason tells him the VA has known about his symptoms but haven’t been able to do anything.
The writers must have seen what we saw, and that is excellent chemistry between Ethan and Connor. These two have such bromance potential and I’m so on board. The two interacted even more this week, as Connor volunteered to help Ethan break through the red tape of the VA for Mason. Later, Ethan returns to the hospital to find Connor taking Mason up for emergency surgery. He pulls through, and the scene between Ethan and Connor on the rooftop was my favorite of the night. I want them to be best friends.
At the VA, Ethan gives Dr. Vicki Glass an earful for not giving Mason the scan he needed. I get that Ethan is mad, there is something seriously wrong with vets not getting the care they need. but it’s not Vicki’s fault! She’s trying. Ethan later apologizes at a military event, and I’m pretty sure there were some sparks between him and Vicki. I bet we haven’t seen the last of her!
What did you think of the episode? Did Will and Daniel do the right thing? Might we see Sarah help April with med school? Will we see more of Dr. Downey and Dr. Glass? Share your thoughts below!
