Ratings Breakdown:
Note: The Republican Debate aired on Fox News Channel from 9-11 p.m.
Fox led the household overnights on this final January Thursday care of “American Idol,” which at a 6.0 rating/10 share from 8-10 p.m. was just eight percent below the 6.5/10 for a one-hour edition on the year-ago evening. All things considered, “American Idol” will be exiting on a positive note in this 15th – and final – season.
In series-premiere news, NBC got some traction out of “You, Me and the Apocalypse”,” which originally aired in Britain for 10 episodes in 2015. The one-hour comedy, starring Rob Lowe, scored a third-place 3.3/ 5 in the household overnights from 8-9 p.m., which generated the network’s strongest regular-program household rating in the time period since Oct. 1, 2015 (with the season’s second episode of “Heroes Reborn,” 3.6/6). Comparably, “You Me and the Apocalypse” also opened 38 percent above the prior three week average overnight household rating for “Heroes Reborn” (2.4).
Both “The Blacklist” (#2” 4.9/ 8 at 9 p.m.) and recently introduced “Shades of Blue” (#1: 4.5/ 8) on NBC from 9-11 p.m. held up well opposite the Republican Debate, with “Shades” inching closer to a second season renewal each week.
In season (or series) finale news, “My Diet is Better Than Yours” on ABC concluded with a slim 1.5/ 2 from 9-11 p.m. Comparably, that was 48 percent below lead-in “Beyond the Tank” (#4: 2.9/ 4 from 8-9 p.m.). The hefty year-to-year decline of 71 percent overall for ABC in these overnight households is a result of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How To Get Away With Murder” airing on the year-ago evening.
In week two news, “D.C.’s Legends of Tomorrow” on The CW scored a 1.9/ 3 in the household overnights from 8-9 p.m., which was an expected 17 percent below the 2.3/ 4 launch one week earlier. That 2.3 overnight rating translated into 3.21 million viewers and a 1.2 rating/4 share in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data. Comparably, this was 36 percent above former time period occupant “The Vampire Diaries” on the year-ago evening (1.4/ 2 on 1/29/15). And it led into a 1.0/ 2 for “The 100” at 9 p.m., which slipped by a considerable 47 percent.
Elsewhere, CBS featured encore telecasts of “The Big Bang Theory” (#1: 6.1/10), “Mom” (#2: 4.7/ 7) and another episode of “The Big Bang Theory” (#3: 4.9/ 8) from 8-9:30 p.m. into episode four of sitcom “Angel From Hell” (#3: 4.3/ 7 at 9:30 p.m.) and DVR-friendly crime solver “Elementary” (#2: 4.0/ 7 at 10 p.m.). Comparably, “Angel From Hell” is only on par from short-lived year-ago occupant “The McCarthys.”
