Joe Johnston, the director behind the original Jumanji, has been tapped to helm the next Narnia film, The Silver Chair.
Silver Chair will take place after the events of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, when Prince Caspian has become King Caspian. The story begins with Caspian's son, the prince, going missing, leading Aslan the lion to send Eustace Scrubb — who was played by The Revenant's Will Poulter in 2010's Dawn Treader — and his boarding school classmate Jill Pope in search of the missing monarch.
The Chronicles of Narnia film franchise began in 2005 with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and continued in 2008 with Prince Caspian and in 2010 with Dawn Treader. The entire franchise has grossed more than $1.6 billion at the global box office. There is no word yet on if any original cast members will return for the latest installment.
TriStar, the Mark Gordon Company and Entertainment One will finance an adaptation of the C.S. Lewis novel. Gordon will produce, alongside C.S. Lewis’ stepson Douglas Gresham, Vincent Sieber, and Melvin Adams.
David Magee, the writer responsible for the book-to-screen adaptations of Life of Pi and Finding Neverland, will pen the script.

9th August 2016 - TriStar, Mark Gordon & eOne to Revive The Chronicles Of Narnia
EXCLUSIVE: The C.S. Lewis classic series The Chronicles of Narnia will receive new life on screen. Sony-based TriStar Pictures is joining The Mark Gordon Company, The C.S. Lewis Company, and Entertainment One (eOne) to make The Silver Chair. The film will be financed by TriStar, eOne and The Mark Gordon Company with Sony and eOne distributing the picture. Mark Gordon, C.S. Lewis’ stepson Douglas Gresham, Vincent Sieber, and Melvin Adams will produce the film. Life Of Pi and Finding Neverland scribe David Magee was already writing the script.
This becomes the second live action iteration of the literary classic. The previous films grossed a collective $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office and they were 2005’s The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, 2008’s Prince Caspian and 2010’s The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The first two came through Disney, and the latter through Fox 2000. The property fits TriStar head Hannah Minghella’s mandate to generate literary properties that will travel, something that fits Tom Rothman’s mandate at Sony. The seven novels in the series have sold over 100 million copies worldwide.
Said Gordon: “Developing this project with The C.S. Lewis Company has been immensely exciting and a real joy. We are so pleased to team up with our good friends at TriStar and our partners at eOne to introduce this new, magical chapter of the Narnia franchise to fans around the world, both old and new.”
Minghella grew up loving the books. “Reading The Chronicles of Narnia was one of the formative experiences of my childhood, just as it has been for children around the world for generations,” she said in a statement. “To have the opportunity to bring new life to the Narnia films with a new creative team is a career highlight. Our mission is to build TriStar Pictures as a home for filmmaker-driven literary and commercial movies, and this film represents a huge step forward for us. We’re thrilled to be working with Mark, Doug, Melvin, Vincent, and David as we adapt The Silver Chair.”
Gresham, the stepson of the late author Lewis said “It’s been both fun and exciting to work with Mark Gordon and David Magee to develop the next Narnian movie, and now it’s a thrill to welcome Tristar to our Narnia family. I greatly look forward to plunging again into the joys and challenges of once more bringing Narnia to the screen, this time with the wonderful story of The Silver Chair.”
Nicole Brown will oversee the project for TriStar with Minghella, with Sara Smith overseeing the project for The Mark Gordon Company. TriStar has the Ang Lee-directed Billy Lynn coming up next.

13th January 2016 - Film Will Reboot Franchise
Last we heard about The Chronicles of Narnia was in June of last year when Life of Pi and Finding Neverland scribe David Magee sent out a tweet to his private Twitter account saying that he completed a first draft of The Silver Chair after spending more than a year working on the project. It was an unofficial update, but a welcome one for fans of a franchise that seemingly expired quietly without a trace. Today, I’m happy to bring an official update on the progress of the film via producer Mark Gordon, who says Narnia is not only very much still alive, it’s experiencing a bit of a rebirth.
Gordon was on hand at the TCA winter press tour in anticipation his new CBS series Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, and I took the opportunity to inquire about the status of the next Narnia sequel. Gordon confirmed that they’re in active development, and hoping to move into production in the near future.
However, it seems that the next film won’t be a sequel at all, but the start of a new franchise entirely. Given the plot of The Silver Chair, the fourth book in the series, which takes places decades in future from where we last saw our heroes in 2010’s Voyage of the Dawn Treader, I also asked if we would see any of the original cast reprising their roles in the new film. The answer is a hard no.

5th December 2013 - David Magee to Write Script
David Magee, who pushed a young boy and a tiger out to sea on a raft and whisked viewers into the head of Peter Pan’s creator, will once again deploy his gift for the fantastic by adapting “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair” for the big screen.
Magee has been nominated for Oscars for his screenplays for “Finding Neverland” and “Life of Pi,” a biopic of author J.M. Barrie and an adaptation of Yann Martel’s examination of perilous ocean travel with big cats, respectively.
“I have always loved ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ and I endlessly imagined myself finding my own passage into Narnia someday,” Magee said in a statement. “All these years later, I’m getting to fulfill that wish just a little bit.”

The Mark Gordon Company and the C.S. Lewis Company have struck a deal to jointly develop and produce The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Silver Chair, which would extend the fantasy film franchise that last appeared with The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader, which Fox released in 2010. Along with the Disney-released The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe in 2005 and Prince Caspian in 2008, the movies have grossed a combined $1.6 billion worldwide.
Mark Gordon and CS Lewis’ stepson Douglas Gresham along with Vincent Sieber, the LA based director of the C.S. Lewis Company, will serve as producers and work with Mark Gordon Co on developing the script. Michele Wolkoff and Sara Smith will oversee for Mark Gordon Co. “I have a great deal of respect for Mark Gordon’s work and am confident that together we can bring the beauty and magical delight that Narnia engenders in the hearts of those who read the books to the screen in ‘The Silver Chair”, Gresham said. “I am very much looking forward to diving once more into Narnia, this time with Mark Gordon and his team.”
