NBC is developing Voice Of The City, an hourlong New York City-set period drama from Tony-nominated Claudia Shear (Dirty Blond), Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land), Oscar winner Bruce Cohen (American Beauty) and Universal TV.
produced by Shear, Voice Of The City is set in New York City in 1891, a world as sexy, shocking and gritty as today. Described as a drama with original musical elements which captures the rise of New York, Voice Of The City is a sweeping story told from the point of view of a romantic showman, Patrick and his love, Lucy, as they struggle to create a life in a new land in the only business they know. Pasek and Paul are executive producing along with Cohen. Universal TV Studios is the studio.
Actress and playwright Shear was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play and Best Actress for Dirty Blonde. Her new musical adaptation of Tuck Everlasting opens on Broadway, Spring 2016, directed by Tony Award-winning director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw.
Pasek and Paul are the Tony/Emmy-nominated songwriters of the upcoming movie musicals La La Land, directed by Damien Chazelle and starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, and The Greatest Showman, directed by Michael Gracey and starring Hugh Jackman, as well as Broadway’s A Christmas Story and other stage musicals James And The Giant Peach, Dogfight, and Dear Evan Hansen, and selected numbers from TV’s Smash.
