Unforgettable - Behind the Beat - Review

AL Reviews UnforgettableThis was a little bit of a darker episode of Unforgettable compared to last week’s. I don’t expect every episode to be filled with laughs and light moments. Those episodes always have their place. This more serious episode kept me very entertained and kept me guessing who this week’s murder was.
The case was an interesting one. A young jazz musician was found shot and Carrie, Al and the rest of the team dove into the Jazz world. Surprisingly, this hit home with Al and at the same time we were given more backstory about our favourite lieutenant. The victim was a student at a music school were Al’s old music teacher now teaches. The evidence led them to believe that he was involved with the murder, to the disbelief of Al. Part of the case reminded me of the movie Whiplash, with the instructor being a very harsh and abusive teacher. If you enjoyed that movie you would like this case. What I really liked was that they added the history of Al into the case. It seems more often then not that we hear about Carrie’s past but not to much about Al, so that was a great addition to the show.
I thought it was interesting that in this episode there was no mention of a new boss replacing Elliot. I’m surprised by this because I thought for sure that they would take this opportunity to add yet another character to the show. I’m perfectly happy if they don’t introduce anyone new, especially given the fact we’ve already got two new additions to Unforgettable. Whatever the writers do I hope they explain it and don't just ignore that they no longer have a boss. Speaking of newbies, we certainly got more screen time with the new detective, Denny. At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to like him as he seemed young and immature. Though he seems like a jokester and wouldn’t be someone you would be able to take seriously, once they put him into the interrogation room we got to see the more serious and tougher side to him. This actually made me like him, a lot!
Again there was a lot of Carrie and Al moments. A sweet dance in the club, lots of flirting banter back and forth between the two of them, and even a date at end. I’m left guessing about what’s going on between those two. It seems like they aren’t together but then you get moments where Al tells Denny he has a “hot date”, only to see him with Carrie. I feel like we’re being strung along. After three seasons of this I think the audience is ready for the writers to make a decision about those two. I have a funny feeling that it won’t be until much later in this season that that happens. Until then, we’ll just have to enjoy the small moments of hope that these two will end up together!
I’m just curious if anyone else is noticing that the show has a different tone to it now that it’s on A&E? I’m not just talking about the new presence of curse words or even the more mature jokes. It’s only a slight change in the show but it’s definitely there and it works. I’m enjoying the darker and more exhilarating content. I’m looking forward to seeing this more and more. Do you feel that the show is a little bit different now?
