21:15 - Netflix - To Have Twice As Many Shows Next Year

Get ready to binge—Netflix’s content chief said this morning that the company will launch even more of its own original shows and feature films next year.
The company’s slate of original programming will include 31 scripted series in 2016, compared to the 16 just this year. In addition to the dozen documentaries and 10 stand-up specials released last year, the company will soon have 30 kids’ series and 10 feature films, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said at the UBS Media Conference in New York today.
“This is high quality stuff,” he said. “This is programming people want to watch.”
For Netflix, original content has proved a solid bet. Not only has the company found an audience for shows like Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Master of None, Sarandos said, but original shows make it easier for Netflix to reach a truly global audience.

21:15 - Hunger Games, Twilight, The Expendables and Saw - Lionsgate Vice Chairman Wants Franchises to Continue
Lionsgate entertainment vice chairman Michael Burns compares Hunger Games to Harry Potter and says it will "live on and on and on."
Burns spoke Tuesday at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York as Lionsgate's latest edition of Hunger Games continues to lead the box office with about $525 million earned worldwide to date. The film grossed just over $100 million in its opening weekend, behind earlier segments. Burns noted that he was disappointed, but that it was a "high-class problem" to have.
Fans of the Katniss Everdeen franchise should definitely expect to see prequels.
"The one thing that kids say they missed [from the early Hunger Games films] was there were no arenas," he said, referencing the stadiums where contestants battled each other and noting the prior films only covered the 74th and 75th competitions. "If we went backwards, there obviously would be arenas."
Burns also spoke of how the studio aims to get more from its other big franchises — including Twilight, The Expendables and Saw — nodding towards reboots, prequels or sequels for each of them.

Do you think the show might really journey to Australia, which has come up a few times in the show and which you mentioned in our conversation? I’m just wondering if you’re leaning toward broadening the show out from Jarden somewhat while still having a lot of the story and a bunch of major characters based there.
This is a very insightful question. I hear Australia is awesome.
Can we assume that if there is a third season, Mary will remain awake for it?
Don’t really want to talk about a season three creative plan until there is a season three, but I think it would be incredibly cruel to both the audience and Janel Moloney to put Mary back to sleep. In fact, I think she’ll just stop sleeping all together so that she can binge watch all the excellent TV shows she missed while she was unconscious. Fun fact: [In the world of the show,] Matthew Weiner departed on October 14, which resulted in “Mad Men’s” abrupt conclusion after its third season. So sad.
Do the violent actions of the Guilty Remnant in the finale provide any kind of social commentary on where this country is at right now given all the mass murders always in the headlines?
It was impossible to write the Meg episode without being aware of current events… but “The Leftovers” has never been a “ripped from the headlines” show and while we’re deeply affected by the senseless and confusing violence both here and abroad, the story we’re telling is more interested in how our characters’ psychological and spiritual confusion often leads to very bad choices.

If Sam Richardson can bear to have Selina Meyer as his boss, a job in the LAPD should be a piece of cake… right?
The Veep actor has booked a guest stint on New Girl‘s upcoming fifth season, TVLine has learned exclusively.
Richardson will appear in one episode of the Fox comedy as a not-particularly-bright, very clumsy police officer who gets paired up with Winston. Season 5 bows Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 8/7c; Richardson’s episode is slated for March.

How’s this for some arresting stunt casting: Brooklyn Nine-Nine has tapped Sons of Anarchy vet Katey Sagal to play the MIA mother of Andy Samberg’s Jake, TVLine has learned exclusively.
Sagal’s character, Karen Peralta, will turn up in an early ’16 episode that will also mark the return of Jake’s dad Roger, played by Bradley Whitford (The West Wing, Transparent).
Per B99 lore, Jake was 7 years-old when his dad left home, leaving Sagal’s Karen to raise him by herself. In other words, expect a tense family reunion.

FX has put in development a half-hour comedy from You’re The Worst creator/showrunner Stephen Falk and writer Alison Bennett.
Written and executive produced by the pair, the untitled project is described as a dirty, female-driven take on the “you can’t go home again” story following Ali, an unrelentingly dissatisfied TV writer who returns to her hometown in rural Pennsylvania to live “the simple life.” Upright Citizens Brigade alumna Bennett hails from a town in Central Pennsylvania where, by her own account, “federal prison inmates staged a haunted house for the public every year.”

In their sixth collaboration, producer Will Packer and director Tim Story have partnered on Live & Learn, a single-camera comedy, which has been sold to Fox.
Written by Crystal Jenkins (Mike & Molly), Live & Learn tracks modern day college life at an HBCU through the eyes of Sydney Mitchell, a suburban freshman who impulsively enrolls in Owen College, a fictional black college in Atlanta, where her long lost father teaches.
The show follows her as she reconnects with her father, Bryan, while trying to gain the sense of cultural identity she lacked her entire life. Story is attached to direct the project, which he executive produces with Packer. Jenkins and Korin D. Huggins, head of Television for Will Packer Productions, co-executive produce. Live & Learn, which reflects on Packer’s experience going to an all-black college, hails from Universal TV and studio-based Will Packer Prods.
