Empire - Et Tu, Brute - Review: an Intriguing Fall Finale

It's time for Empire to go on haitus. The Lyons' stories will be back this March, and Et Tu, Brute was an hell of a goodbye.

The fall finale of this second season is focused on the intrigues behind Empire's board control. It’s a big day for the Lyons family, the American Sound Awards' nominations have come out and Jamal has been one of the nominees. He and Skye (Alicia Keys) celebrate this news, and Lucious finds out about their affaire. In one of the most absurd scene of Empire so far, he says: “She fixed you”. So wrong in so many levels, and by the end of the episode this newborn relationship is over. An interesting storyline that was not greatly developed. A little bit “out-of-the-blue”.

Jamal is not one of the main concerns of the Lyons’ patriarch: he makes a reckless move with Mimi and she mercilessly betrays him. During a meeting of the Empire’s shareholders, Mimi makes them aware of Lucious’ lack of esteem and she asks to remove him. One of the juiciest plot twist of the episode was the arrival of Camille (Naomi Campbell) as Mimi’s wife. As a newborn Brute, Hakeem votes against his father and betrays the whole family, his mother included. A game-changing plot twist that I didn’t see coming. I really loved this moment, and I truly appreciate how Empire is able to shift his own ground, once again.

This  wasn’t enough. Firstly Rhonda meets with an overly crazy Anika, and then she is pushed down her house's stairs, in one of the funniest fall of the history of television. She will likely lose the baby, and we will have to witness to one of the most traumatic Andre’s crisis. I am certain of that, and I am sad for Andre. He can’t have a moment of happiness.

This Fall finale closed some not-so-interesting storylines, and it opened a whole new level of juiciness and crazyness. This is our beloved Empire. I am a bit disappointed by this first half of the season, because Empire is not made to have long full seasons. Its strongest characteristic is the totally crazy level of speediness of the plot, and these first episodes lacked of it. It should have stayed in a 13-15 range of episodes' order.
All in all, I just can’t wait to watch the next episode. It's has been a while.

What do you think of Et Tu, Brute?
