Ash vs Evil Dead - The Killer of Killers - Review: Start the Day Right
Dec 14, 2015
Ash vs Evil Dead JH ReviewsRuby and Amanda arrive just a little too late to catch up with Ash. The Brujo’s funeral pyre is still burning, and Ash hasn’t made it out of the property’s line of sight yet.
Something on the property, I’m guessing the Brujo’s good magic, reacts to Ruby’s presence. Before I had a chance to figure it out, The Evil arrived…there’s no Deadite like a Flaming Skeletal Deadite. The Flaming Deadite attacks Amanda. She, like so many soldiers in so many action movies, starts shooting, and, as in so may action movies, the bullets have no effect. Ruby rushes to her rescue with a scythe to save Amanda.
The Flaming Deadite accuses Ruby of being a double crosser. It also tells her that “the others will never let her get the book for herself.” Suddenly there’s more to Ruby’s quest than just finding Ash and stopping him from destroying the world. The Flaming Deadite pulls Ruby into the pyre and presumably straight to Hell. In the wake of Ruby’s apparent death, Amanda goes after Ash. Ash’s hand is no longer in Ruby’s car. I think it’s gone looking for Ash as well.
Ash, meanwhile, is destroying pancakes in a nearby diner. His trip to the Brujo’s ranch was a success. Ash now knows what he needs to do. He needs to go back to the cabin. Pablo and Kelly volunteer to go with him. He finally accepts their offer. But first a major issue must be taken care of….paying the breakfast bill. Ash volunteers to “work” it off. Not even the sight of the waitress’ cleaver wielding husband stops him. Ash gets set for a pleasant late morning’s work when Amanda barges in to arrest him.
I am beginning to think of the woman as That Idiot Amanda. She marches him out of the diner just as the detective actually assigned to the case and The Evil arrive. Moments later Ash is fighting a diner full of Deadites. Amanda finally gets some understanding of the big picture and a chance to watch Ash in action. In the end, she decides to travel with him.
Pablo and Kelly face the emotional baggage surrounding Demon Kelly’s actions. Kelly calls him sweet and pure again….which is not helping Pablo’s quest for a real relationship with her. They’re having a nice conversation until the Brujo’s necklace (now Pablo’s) and the Necronomicon get into a fight. Pablo and Kelly break the two apart (barely) and lock the book back into Ash’s locker.
Miscellaneous:
In most of the interviews before the series began we were promised lots of blood and gore. They’ve kept that promise but the diner scene merrily pushed that envelope a little more. Loved Kelly working out her issues with the diner waitress. The ice skaters’ and that idiot kid in the restroom both qualified as creative kills.
This episode moved us a little further along on Ruby’s story. I’m fairly certain that she’ll be back but I don’t know if she’s a misguided good guy or villain. Does anyone have any interesting theories about Ruby’s plans or motives?
