Z Nation - Rozwell - Review
8 Nov 2015
KL Reviews Z NationFollowing the announcement that Z Nation got renewed for a third season, we get one of the most wtf episodes of the series. This week Team Bite Mark find themselves in Roswell after witnessing an unidentified flying object. Just when you think this show could not get any weirder.
Upon arriving in town they quickly find out that the people are a bunch of extraterrestrial loving kooks who believe they were "inducted," invited by the aliens, rather than abducted. Their leader, Bernadette, who by the way is portrayed by Missi Pyle from the 1999 alien spoof film Galaxy Quest, is the only one who has communicated with the beings. She has this way of transporting from one spot to another in the blink of an eye. This is never explained how, but the team's reaction, especially Murphy's, to her strange ability is hilarious.
There is also another man in town who believes that the aliens are not there to save them. In fact, they just were already present. Any which way, all the townspeople seem a bit wonky. There can't really be aliens in this show, or are there?
Bernadette brings the survivors down to an underground bunker where they come across what seems to be an alien, well, a zombie alien, as well as some cool, futuristic tech and weaponry. All signs point to the fact they'll be introducing extraterrestrials into this zombie show.
However, it is revealed that in fact the man who told the team about the aliens being already on earth has been manipulating the town. He created the UFO and the cool tech and the costume he wears to make him seem alien. He also put zombies in costumes too. Though in his dying words the man reveals he was ordered to do this by the aliens, which leaves the question of whether aliens do exist in the Z Nation world wide open. The truth is still out there, if you will.
This was kind of a filler episode, albeit a really crazy one that has me scratching my head asking what the heck did I just watch. Nevertheless, Z Nation somehow made this premise work, entertaining us with their usual brand of humor. There were also some really cool action sequences too, like with 10K pulling out the scythe and wacking the charging Z in slow mo as blood splatters around him. The guy is becoming more badass each episode.
Much respect goes out to the writers who are willing to just go completely out there and do what ever the heck they want with Z Nation. Zombie strippers, let's do it; zombie farm animals, why not; zombie George R.R. Martin, bring it on! Add zombie aliens or at least the idea of them before it is debunked to this show's list of wonky ideas.
As an aside from this episode, I noticed that Citizen Z has not made an appearance in quite a few episodes, proving how unnecessary the character is. This show has been much improved without his scenes distracting viewers from the adventures of Team Bite Mark. If they are going to kill off another character by season's end, I nominate Citizen Z. I'm sure I am not alone with that thought.
