17th June 2016 - Thea Sharrock Attached to Direct
The Selection is one step closer to multiplexes. EW has learned Me Before You director Thea Sharrock is attached to the adaptation of the bestselling YA series by Kiera Cass.
The dystopia-meets-The Bachelor series follows young America Singer as she’s chosen to compete for the affections of a prince. Of course, as she enters the Selection process, she’s not exactly single — America was in a secret relationship before she left for the castle — and the government, based on an awkward caste system, isn’t exactly stable.
The author was pleased to share the big news on Twitter, but she warned fans not to get too excited just yet, as the film isn’t yet greenlit.
We are still not greenlit though. The best thing you can do is cheerlead to @wbpictures and I will keep you posted! #SelectionMovie

So, what does adding a director mean for the #SelectionMovie? It means we're one step closer. And I'm happy with the choice...

6th November 2015 - Kiera Cass Delivers Progress Update
In 2012, The CW attempted to turn the books into a television series, even getting so far as to shoot two different pilots (one starring Friday Night Lights alum Aimee Teegarden as America). That, Cass confesses, was a bad idea. “For me, it’s all about the characters. So when I got the final incarnation of the TV script, and those characters had been made unrecognizable, I was crushed,” she says. “I feel much more confident in the team this time around, and I’m looking forward to seeing where everything goes.”
Cass has even bigger news about the team behind the new attempt at an adaptation. In April, Warner Bros. announced they were developing the first book as a film, and had hired Black List writer Katie Lovejoy to adapt it. “I have read the first draft of the script, and I’m very happy with the direction they’re heading in,” Cass says. “[Katie and I] had a long conversation about the story and points that we thought the fans would consider must-haves. I tried to casually ask around about that, and everything they mentioned were things Katie was already taking into account. It’s one of those things that can fall apart at any minute, but if it makes it to the screen, I think the readers will be happy.“
Perhaps Cass will have more updates for us when she goes on tour to promote the final book in the series, The Crown, which hits shelves on May 3, 2016. This fifth novel will pick up where The Heir left off: 20 years after Prince Maxon’s Selection and disbanding of the caste system. Now his daughter, Princess Eadlyn, faces her own slew of suitors while her country is on the brink of civil war. Here’s our exclusive cover reveal:

22nd April 2015 - WB Developing Movie
Warner Bros has won film rights to Kiera Cass’ global bestseller The Selection, the first of a five-novel series, and has set Black List scribe Katie Lovejoy to adapt it. DiNovi Pictures’ Denise DiNovi and Alison Greenspan are producing with Pouya Shahbazian. Lovejoy’s script The Arsonist Love Story made the 2010 Black List.
The book has sold 3.5 million copies worldwide, and two other volumes have been published. HarperTeen just made a two-book deal to continue the series, which is published in 32 languages. Described as The Hunger Games without the bloodshed, it follows 35 underprivileged girls who are chosen to compete to live in a life of luxury. The protagonist, America Singer, is sweet on a young man from her district, but when she’s exposed to the opulence of a royal life, she’s conflicted, even though a rebel uprising threatens the pampered.
As for Lovejoy, she recently developed a pilot for NBC, with Universal Television, Eva Longoria, and John Glenn producing. She previously wrote pilots for NBC, Bravo, and ABC and worked on the staff of the NBC series Dracula. She is repped by CAA and Myman Greenspan. Cass is repped by Red Tree Literary and New Leaf Literary & Media. Andy Fischel and Julia Spiro are overseeing for Warner Bros.
