The question to 'Who Killed the Colorado Kid?' has finally been answered after Nathan and Vince take a visit to 1983. Time travel is a plot device that can easily convolute things in a show, but Haven has used it sparingly and done a solid job with it, 'Just Passing Through' being one example.
The team finds out they need to create a thinny to enter the void so they can find a controller to use the barn. Their answer is a woman, last name Colton, who is revealed to use a ring to open a thinny at will. They get Stephen Mosley from season 3 to use his time travel trouble to achieve their goal.
The episode also features some solid work from Jonathan Crombie who is perfect as young Dave in both appearance and mannerisms. The scene of Vince disguising himself as a literary agent and describing Dave's writing as "muscular" was quite amusing.
Landy Cannon also guests as a young Garland Wuornos. I can see Cannon playing a younger Josh Brolin, the similarity in their look and acting is uncanny. Both Cannon and Bryant have a touching heart to heart moment when Nathan tries to thank his dad for raising him the way he did. Despite being harsh, Nathan realizes it helped him become the man he would become.
Through his trip through time, Nathan finds out the ring he has held close to his chest, intentionally given to him by his father, is the key to opening the veil and only a descendant of a Colton can use it.
This brings us to Duke's part of the story. He is being held captive by mystery men in suits waiting for their leader and finally William Shatner is revealed. Wait, no, just some guy that looks like a wimpier Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) from Fringe who has a letter from Nathan that he has held for over 30 years. This whole situation was way too overdramatic and cliché. The worst part was that it was built up for him to find out by the letter that he is needed to find the descendant of the Colton's and it is revealed to be William Shatner!? No? Not yet? No, just Hayley, that annoying girl from a few episodes ago.
In all seriousness, this was one of the more heartbreaking episodes of the season. With the final mystery surrounding the Colorado Kid now out of the way it really feels like we are winding down to the end and so far, for the most part, it has been a solid stretch of final episodes.
