Chicago PD - Forget My Name - Review

First and foremost, congrats to Chicago PD (and Chicago Fire) on the early renewal for the 2016-2017 season! This early of a renewal really shows how much the network believes in this series (as they should) and I hope we continue to enjoy the show(s) for many seasons to come. Now onto the latest episode…

Antonio takes Halstead to meet with a potential CI and this guy is paranoid. You know, the typical government, the NSA is listening stuff. He gives Antonio and Halstead a tip about a big narcotics movement that leads the team not to drugs, but a dead body.

The team follows the suspect who is eventually taken down by Halstead and Lindsay, who are “undercover” in a standard squad car. They pull him over claiming it’s for a broken break light, but the guy isn’t buying it. As soon as Erin’s back is turned, he gets out of the car and aims his gun. No need to worry, Halstead takes him out…a few times. Roman pulls the tarp back from the truck bed and finds the body, and so begins the case of the week.

The whole problem with the case is that the information comes from the NSA. Technically, it was obtained unconstitutionally, so it can’t be used in court. This puts the team in a precarious situation this week as they navigate the homicide. While the homicide is the case for the team, it really encompasses much more; encryption software for the Pentagon is missing and if lost, could naturally cause some serious issues. In order to solve the murder, the team has to go after the chips.

The deceased victim’s wife Nora plays the ignorant, grieving widow well, but she’s hiding something. And by hiding something, I mean she’s behind everything. The team bugs her house, and I love that Mouse got to be in on the action! It’s nice to see him out of the office. Nora meets up with Aaron Franceur, a high ranking member of the tech company. These two are definitely in cahoots.

Mouse puts the team on the trail to a storage facility, but the container in question is cleared out. They don’t find anything in the storage facility, but a car chase ensues and Olinsky, Ruzek, and Atwater cut off the car, whose driver is Aaron Franceur. Aaron and Nora were in cahoots (in more ways than one) and both go down for the stolen chips.

While the writing was great (as always) and the subplots were enjoyable, I didn’t care for this case. What I would like to see is a case that spans multiple episodes. The cases that span the different shows are always fantastic, and it’s partly because the time allows them to go a bit deeper. I would love to see something that isn’t wrapped up so neatly within the hour.


Elsewhere…

They say three’s a crowd, so what does that make four people in a one bedroom apartment? The living arrangement Olinsky forced on Ruzek isn’t going well, as they understandably feel a bit invaded. Ruzek and Burgess seem to be doing well, but I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop (the pessimist in me, sorry). I don’t think these two will be walking down the aisle anytime soon, and I hope when things do inevitably fall apart, that Burgess turns to Roman. Not romantically, but as a friend. I love their relationship and hope we see a lot more of it.

Halstead had this snarky and kind of flirty interaction with the lawyer for the company making the chips. The banter goes back and forth for the whole episode, and I can’t tell if the lawyer hates Halstead, wants to jump him, or both. Probably both, as she gives him her number. Lindsay is jealous! But only briefly, as Halstead rips it up without giving it a second thought.

Captain Whitaker calls on Atwater to get his son out of a sticky situation. Roman and Burgess picked up his son Nathan on some “minor” possession charges, and Whitaker wants Atwater to talk them out of holding him. I liked Whitaker, but I don’t like people abusing their power. I lost a bit of respect for him this week. Call it tough love, but if your kid is dumb enough to mess with drugs and get caught (twice), he probably needs to spend some time dealing with those consequences.

Mouch is going to propose to Platt! He enlists the help of Burgess to get Platt’s ring size. Burgess craftily gets Platt’s ring size by…putting lotion on her hands? I don’t how she was able to determine ring size by that method, but the scene was hilarious nonetheless. After massaging Platt’s hands with the lotion, Platt is visibly uncomfortable and says, “I feel like we just mad out…like I should make you a mixtape.”
