American Horror Story - Room 33 - Review
Nov 15, 2015
American Horror Story Reviews ROAHS continued its amazing 5th season last Wednesday with "Room 33". I must say I’m a big fan of this season. Hotel is absolutely thrilling, captivating and disturbing. It felt like season 1 where everything was connected, all the characters and the storylines converge inside the hotel and it’s such a pleasure to find all those crazy deranged characters in the dark place.
"Room 33" and last week episode, "Room Service" really dug into the vampires mythology and it was really a part I was looking forward. Last week, we watched Iris and Alex turning into vampires. It changed them, Iris killed a couple of hipsters while Alex used her new powers to save a kid, who unfortunately turned his whole classroom into little vampires murdering their teachers. Oops. That was surprising and so scary. Can't wait to see what's next for the little vampires army.
This week in "Room 33", we got to know more about the Countess and her special son. First, I must say I was quite surprised and excited to see the Murder House back ! In 1926, Elizabeth went to have her abortion there but the baby survived it and killed a nurse…. Another creepy kid on the show.
The Countess kept her son in room 33 but when Ramona came, with her vengeance plan she decided to go there but he attacked her and went away ! It was Alex who finally got him back to the Countess. They both saved their children, it’ll make them closer I guess.
Alex Lowe is such a surprise as character. I really didn’t think she would be so interesting. She’s a great character, her vampire status gave her more strength and confidence. I think she might become The Countess nemesis soon. They both have their army of vampire children, so it could be interesting.
Alex got Elizabeth’s baby back at her house, after John shot the baby monster. Because the little brat went into his suitcase when he finally decided to leave the hotel. Poor John, he had been through hell inside the Cortez. His world kept being shaken upside down. He went to a special dinner with serial killers, he had sex with a ghost, he got fired from his police job and he finally saw his missing son. Alex had to intervene and after moving the coffins and the kids from the swimming pool, she used the tourist girls from the premiere to lure John away from the hotel. And their bloody sex party totally worked, he went back home with his daughter. Unfortunately for John, the craziness continued as he shot Elizabeth’s baby in his house, scaring and traumatizing his daughter ! I actually laughed when she ran away screaming.
I really like John’s character, just like Lana Winters in Asylum he’s a good person, he’s trying to understand what is happening around him but he keeps being hurt and damaged by his discoveries. But I don't think it will survive the season.
"Room 33" was also informative about the ghost mythology inside the hotel. Donovan, who came with Ramona to kill Elizabeth’s kids but who finally chickened out, told us more about the ghosts and why they’re staying the hotel. They’re stuck in the hotel, they can’t get out of it, as it’s the hotel power until they find a purpose. The spirits are trapped in a circle until they broke it. They’re aimless, but they can be break the circle when they find a purpose... The purpose being terrorizing and murdering the guests in the hotel. That won’t make them leave the hotel but they will have more control over the place. I was glad Donovan made all those revelations, it really gave more info on the ghost and what they are able to do.
So, basically Donovan told the girls to kill someone and that what they did. Poor Mr Woo just wanted to have fun with the ladies and got stabbed. It was good to know about the ghosts and what they can do. Not surprisingly, the Hotel is a bit like Murder House. It a dark and a special place, haunted by the spirits of those who died there and they’re continuing the circle of deaths inside the place.
The best part of "Room 33" was of Liz Taylor ! Last week, in "Room Service" we finally got to know more about her. Her flashbacks were particularly touching. Liz was a weak and discreet man before coming to the Hotel but his night with The Countess changed everything. She changed her without turning her. Liz is a very special character and Denis O’Hare is just absolutely brilliant portraying her.
This week in "Room 33", Liz finally got to fall in love for the very first time, as a hetero girl, with Tristan. Their scene together in bed was particularly cute and sweet. They both expressed their love. They were thrilled to have found each other and I must say they were great together. But Tristan was The Countess new boyfriend and so of course it couldn’t end well.
First, The Countess used Tristan as a sex toy for her future money husband Will Drake. It was funny to watch them both denying they were gay but about to have gay sex. But the worst part came when Liz Taylor decided to tell Elizabeth the truth about her love for the same man. Denis O’Hare and Lady Gaga were absolutely amazing in that scene. The Countess has a special attachment to Liz Taylor, she really cares for her. It was sweet of her to think first about the surgery when Lizsaid she wanted to talk.
But Liz’s declaration of Love for Tristan really hurt the Countess. She took this revelation as a betrayal, she didn’t really love Tristan but she couldn’t let him to someone else. So after telling Liz she could have him she sliced his throat and went away. Poor Liz, she found love and he’s already gone. Well, he’ll be a ghost now so they’ll keep hanging out and he’ll stay young forever.
Tristan and Liz were very touching as a couple, especially Tristan but maybe he was a bit too angry ather. He yelled and even if he was a dumb model boy, as he admitted, he saw right throught her and her controlling ways. She was just using him and he wanted to more than one of her toy. He wanted to be loved...Damn, The Countess is one cruel vampire queen.
"Room 33" was another excellent episode of AHS Hotel. The season really delivers great moments and I really appreciate how it's constructed as a whole, where each character and story converge. I've been missing that in the last seasons, and Hotel is so creepy, dark and twisted, I'm loving it !
what did you think of "Room 33" ? Do you enjoy this season ? Who is your favorite character ? Hit the comments
Vampires notes :
- Auntie Ramona ! Oh God I love her. Her scene with Liz was excellent. I can’t wait to see the Ramona/Elizabeth confrontation.
- Emotions are flavors for vampires. That is excellent ! And they can hear your heartbeat too. I think they’re the best creatures in the AHS universe. With the witches...
- The commandments killer struck again, and it was disgusting… For now this is the only part which felt totally outside of the story. The killer can’t be a ghost right ? So who could it be ?
