After 4 long months, The Originals is back! Flashbacks showed us how the Original family lived right after becoming vampires and introduced us to some new faces. Someone has taken over the bayou and is trying to kill the werewolves, including Hayley, who are still cursed. Luckily Elijah put a stop to that. Klaus spent the episode hanging out with Lucien and received a prophecy that basically said that things will get a lot worse this season than they are now. Freya did a lot of babysitting and partying (not at the same time), Marcel opened a boxing ring and Cami got to play detective along with Vincent when two staged bodies show up in town. Davina is struggling to hang on the her leadership position with the witches and decides to asks Hayley for help.
Favorite Original: So Elijah has never really been in my top 3 when it comes to Original siblings, but it seems that he might get there this season. We’re used to seeing the honorable side of Elijah and last season we even got a glimpse of what it looks like when he loses control, but this week he was the perfect balance. I’m glad Elijah is still furious with Klaus, I was a little worried he’d forgive him too soon. He got to take out some of his anger on several security teams who were trying to wipe out the wolves in the bayou. The minute those guys turned up, I knew they wouldn’t live long. Though, I am curious as to who is trying to take the werewolves’ land. Anyways, I’d very much like to see more of this slightly darker, protective Elijah.
Favorite relationship: We only saw a little glimpse of Freya’s relationship with Hope, but I already love it. They’ve clearly been spending a lot of time together over the past few months seeing as Freya is now the only mother figure in Hope’s life. When Klaus and Elijah started a fight in front of Hope, it was Freya who told them to take it elsewhere. She was also Elijah’s first call when he needed someone to look after Hope. I hope we get to see more of their bond.
Least favorite character: I’ll give you three guesses, though you’ll probably only need one: Klaus, of course. The only two people he still seems to get along with are Freya and Cami, but even their patience is wearing thin. I didn’t count Hope because that poor child doesn’t know any better. This week, Klaus decided to host an art show for himself. He then proceeded to kill one of the critics who gave a very accurate description of Klaus. He really needs to get his act together. At this rate, every character on this show will want to kill him by the winter finale.
Biggest ‘what the hell’ moment: I have no idea what that last scene with Lucien was supposed to be about, but it was super creepy. I’m assuming this means he’ll turn out to be a psychopath. As long as he doesn’t resemble Kai too much, I don’t have a problem with that.
Character that’s in way over her head: I’m afraid Davina may have gotten more than she bargained for. She’s under a lot of pressure, having to rule over all of those witches. Especially when some don’t want her in charge. But I don’t see how using Hayley is going to help her. If anything, it could cause more animosity with the werewolves and I don’t think Elijah will be particularly thrilled when he hears about it either.
Best new character: So aside from the mouth-slicing-scene, I actually liked Lucien. He reminded me a little of Kol. I’m curious to learn more about this guy, especially his darker side.
Biggest mystery: So I know the biggest mystery should probably be who the serial killer in New Orleans is, but I don’t find that storyline all that interesting if I’m being totally honest. Aurora, on the other hand, I find very intriguing. We know very little of her other than that she lived in the 11th century and, since she’s still alive, I’m assuming she’s now a vampire. But I have no clue as to what she was doing in that last scene, though I assume it’s going to be a storyline that’ll last through the season.
Moment where I almost cheered: When Klaus dropped by Cami’s apartment at the end of the episode, she had finally had enough. So she gave him a speech (which I added to my best quote list) that had me actually cheering her on … until she started apologizing. She shouldn’t have, because what she said was absolutely true and Klaus needed to hear it. I truly hope she snaps more often because I think the entire Original family could use a speech like that.
Biggest question: So a notable absence, at least for me, was Josh. I haven’t been keeping up with interviews and such over the past few months so I have no idea if he’s coming back, but I do hope so. Davina seems really lonely and Josh is probably still grieving Aiden so maybe they could help out each other? Please, writers.
Storyline for the season: So this season’s main storyline will obviously revolve around the flashbacks we saw this week and this war between the sire lines that Lucien mentioned. Which makes it odd that 3 of the 5 Original siblings are absent in the present time. I enjoyed seeing Rebekah, Kol and Finn as we first met them and hope to see more of that family dynamic.
Best quotes: Rebekah: "Please can we keep him?"
Freya: "You'll have to excuse your auntie Freya, I've had a few big-girl-drinks tonight."
Cami: "Don’t be so flippant and self-absorbed. Right now, people like me are out there getting killed by people like you. Conveniently timed with the arrival of your old acquaintance. And you just barge in here and start mouthing off orders? I get it. You’re a vampire. It’s a tortured existence. I’m sorry, but do you really have to be such an insensitive disappointment?"
That’s it for this week. Check in again next week and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
