-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by “Empire,” Fox is the network to beat on Wednesday. “Empire” topped the night at an 8.7 rating/14 share in the household overnights from 9-10 p.m., which was just three percent below the 9.0/14 one week earlier. And that 9.0 in the overnights translated into 13.74 million viewers and a 5.5 rating/17 share in adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). Once Live + 7 Day results are factored in, anticipate another week of over 20-million viewers for “Empire.”
Episode three of “Empire” lead-in “Rosewood” dropped to a 4.3/ 7 in the overnights at 8 p.m. (#4), which was 10 percent below the 4.8/ 8 one week earlier. Year-ago occupant “Hell’s Kitchen” only scored a 3.1/ 5 (on 10/08/14), and this should still be good for close to just under a 2.0 in adults 18-49. Given the underwhelming performance for “Minority Report” on Monday (and the word underwhelm is kind), expect a full season episode order for “Rosewood.”
Unfortunately for Fox, there are holes aplenty outside of Wednesday.
On CBS, warhorse “Survivor” continues to successfully tick, with a 5.4/ 9 in the household overnights from 8-9 p.m. good for over 9-million viewers and an expected 2.3-2.4 rating in adults 18-49 once the Live + Same Day data is released. Veteran “Criminal Minds,” however, slipped to a 5.4/ 8 in the overnights at 9 p.m., which was 13 percent below its 6.2/10 season opener one week earlier and it should fall in the vicinity of a 1.7 rating in the demo. As for this current season of “Survivor,” this is another “A” grade edition Mr. Burnett.
With weaker lead-in support, week two of CBS drama “Code Black” dropped to a 4.4/ 8 (#1) at 10 p.m., which was 21 percent below the 5.6/10 one week earlier and 14 percent below marginal “Stalker” on the year-ago evening (5.1/ 9 on 10/08/14). Chances are “Code Black” will only score about a 1.2 rating in adults 18-49.
In season-premiere news, “Arrow” on The CW was right on par with the year-ago opener at a 1.9/ 3 in the overnights at 8 p.m. (which should result in about a 1.0 rating in adults 18-49). But veteran “Supernatural,” which is now in season 11, slipped to a 1.2/ 2 at 9 p.m. Comparably, that was 37 percent below the 1.9/ 5 year-ago opener (which benefitted out of the record 3.4/ 5 opening levels for lead-in “The Flash” on 10/08/14), and 33 below the 8:30 p.m. portion of “Arrow” (21.8/ 3).
Over at ABC, the two-hour comedy block – “The Middle” (#2: 5.1/ 9), “The Goldbergs” (#4: 4.5/ 7), “Modern Family” (#2: 5.5/ 9) and “black-ish” (#4: 4.1/ 6) – remained a solid alternative. But tired “Nashville” dipped to a 3.3/ 6 in the overnights at 10 p.m., which will probably result in only about a 1.1-rating in adults 18-49.
NBC, meanwhile, remains a respectable older-skewing alternative with its line-up of dramas “The Mysteries of Laura” (#3: 4.9/ 8), “Law & Order: SVU” (#4: 4.7/ 7) and “Chicago PD” (#2: 4.3/ 7).
