Note: The Monday Night Football match-up on ESPN was Detroit versus Seattle.
At first glance the immediate observation for this third Monday of the new TV season is overnight household erosion. All five broadcast networks, Fox in particular, were down from the comparable year-ago evening. But there was still positive news to be found among the Big 3.
Two hours of NBC’s The Voice” (8.1 rating/12 share from 8-10 p.m.) tied ABC’s competing “Dancing With the Stars” (8.1/13) in household rating, with each close to week-ago and year-ago overnight levels. “The Voice,” of course, will hold a significant lead in all the key young adult demographics. “Dancing With the Stars” is a breeding ground for a solid number of older viewers (who, as I always say, are still worthy to both the networks and the advertisers).
Leading out of “The Voice” was week three of new NBC drama “Blindspot,” which was flat from one week earlier at a dominant 5.9/10 in the overnights at 10 p.m. That 5.9 rating one week earlier translated into 9.11 million viewers and a 2.6 rating/8 share in adults 18-49. Needless to say, the nine additional scripts ordered for “Blindspot” this season will certainly turn into episodes.
Airing out of “Dancing With the Stars” was “Castle” at a 4.7/ 8 (#3) at 10 p.m., which was flat from last week but still down by 25 percent from the 6.3/10 on the year-ago evening. Anticipate about a 1.2 rating in adults 18-49 for Castle” (based on the Live + Same Day data), which is certainly nothing to boast about.
“The Big Bang Theory” on CBS topped the night, of course, with a 10.1/16 at 8 p.m. Next was week three of “Life in Pieces,” which dipped by 44 percent to a 5.7/ 9 in the overnights at 8:30 p.m. While CBS is heavily promoting “Life in Pieces” as the most-watched new sitcom this season, a 5.8 in the household overnights last week translated into a 1.9 rating/6 share in adults 18-49 (out of a 3.8/13 for “The Big Bang Theory”). While no one expected “Life in Pieces” to hold the “Big Bang” lead-in, 50 percent slippage in the demo is too severe.
As for “Life in Pieces,” why is the recipe for any comedy featuring an elderly couple always a mixture of one daffy but sensible parent and the other a complete kook?
Sophomore “Scorpion” followed “Life in Pieces” with a consistent 6.6/10 from 9-10 p.m., which should result in about a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49. And tired “NCIS: Los Angeles” scored a 5.6/ 9 at 10 p.m. (#2), which was eight percent above the 5.2/ 9 one week earlier.
Over at Fox, the cancellation clock is rapidly ticking on drama “Minority Report,” which sunk to a mere 1.6/ 2 in the overnights at 9 p.m. Comparably, that was 50 percent below deteriorating lead-in “Gotham” (#4: 3.2/ 5 at 8 p.m. – down 30 percent year-to-year). And a 1.9/ 3 for “Minority Report” in the household overnights last week translated into just 2.56 million viewers and a 0.9/ 3 in adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data).
Note to “Gotham”: You had better watch out…”Supergirl” on CBS is only three weeks away!
The CW closed the night with the season finale of worthy “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” (#5: 1.0/ 2 at 8 p.m.), “Whose Line is it Anyway” (#5: 0.8/ 1 at 9 p.m.) and the series-finale of sitcom “Significant Mother” (#5: 0.4/ 1).

About the Daily Ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.
