And we always take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence. Ratings Breakdown:
NBC owns Sunday in fourth quarter care of “Sunday Night Football,” with the Dallas Cowboys at the New Orleans Saints match-up at an estimated 14.8 rating/24 share in the household overnights from 8:30-11:45 p.m. Comparably, this was six percent above the 13.9/23 for the Denver Broncos at the Detroit Lions one week earlier, and that translated into 22.07 million viewers and an 8.1 rating/25 share in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data.
NBC opened the evening with pre-game “Football Night in America” at a 1.8/ 3 at 7 p.m. (#4), a 4.6/ 8 (#3) at 7:30 p.m., and a dominant 9.3/15 in the 8 p.m. half-hour.
In promising news for ABC, week two of scripted drama “Quantico” built by a hefty 42 percent in the overnights out of the second installment of “Blood & Oil.” It averaged a 4.7/ 8 at 10 p.m., tying the season-premiere of competing “CSI” Cyber” on CBS for the distant No. 2 spot and building from year-ago occupant “Revenge” (3.4/ 6 on 10/05/14) by 38 percent. While “Quantico” did drop by a typical 11 percent in the household overnights from its week-ago 5.1/ 9 debut, lead-in “Blood & Oil” slipped by 27 percent (versus a 4.5/ 7 on Sept. 27). That translated into a 1.4/ 4 in adults 18-49 for “Blood & Oil” into a 1.9/ 6 for “Quantico” last week. Needless to say, ABC should flip their time periods.
Earlier in the evening on ABC were repeats of the first two episodes of “The Muppets” (#4: avg. 1.7/ 3 from 7-8 p.m.), followed by “Once Upon a Time” at a depressed 3.3/ 5 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m. (#4). Comparably, that was 11 percent below the week-ago season-opener (which resulted in 5.92 million viewers and a 1.8/ 5 in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data), and 31 percent below the 4.8/ 7 in the overnights one year earlier.
Over at CBS, all individual program results are approximate due to football bleeding into primetime on the East Coast until approximately 7:30 p.m. That said, granddaddy “60 Minutes” remained an older skewing favorite at an estimated 8.7/14 in the household overnights from 7-8 p.m. and the perfect lead-in to “Madam Secretary.” The Tea Leoni drama opened season two at an 8.4/13 at 8 p.m., which was right on par with the 8.7/13 on the year-ago evening.
Critical favorite “The Good Wife” returned for season seven at a 6.6/10 from 9-10 p.m., which held 82 percent of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “Madam Secretary.” And it led into a 4.7/ 8 (#2) for the aforementioned second season premiere of “CSI: Cyber” at 10 p.m. (#2t). Considering parent “CSI” concluded last week, there was really no need to keep modest “CSI: Cyber” afloat. The bottom line: The 50+ audience skew on CBS Sunday (excluding “CSI: Cyber”), which should be considered a relevant demo, performs well opposite “Sunday Night Football.”
On Fox, an estimated half-hour football primetime overrun scored a 15.5/27 in the 7 p.m. half-hour, and that led into post-game “The OT” at an 8.6/14 at 7:30 p.m. (#2). With stronger lead-in support, tired “The Simpsons” rose to a 4.0/ 3 in the overnights in the 8 p.m. half-hour (up 82 percent from the 2.2/ 3 one week earlier), and that led into slight improvements for “Brooklyn Nine-None” (#4: 2.8/ 4), “Family Guy” (#4: 2.5/ 4) and sophomore “The Last Man on Earth” (#4: 2.3/ 4) from 8:30-10 p.m.
