Empire – Poor Yorick – Review: “Empire’s a definite dimension”

Empire has established its own definite dimension. The second season’s fourth episode is called Poor Yorick and it has all Empire’s points of force: family fights, great characters’ moments, plot twists and great performances. Just another day in the Lyons’ lifetime.

Despite their feud, the Lyons decide to collaborate on a project that will benefit both Empire and Lyons Dinasty: it’s Hakeem’s and Jamal’s video. But things turn out pretty ugly. A famous photographer (played by Buffy’s Thomas Lenk) decides to paint the cover for Jamal’s new album. Lucious wants to make Vernon disappear to exit FBI’s controls. Andre decides to challenge his father in order to return to the company and at the end of the episode, he is welcomed back.

I really enjoyed this episode. Firstly I really like how Hakeem is totally faithful to her mother. Lyons Dynasty is going through an hard time, but the relationship between Cookie and her youngest son is really growing beautifully. I also liked how Cookie for the first time was speechless with Lucious. There were some crazy moments as the mind-blowing ending with Andre and Rhonda, and Vernon’s dead body. There were also some heart-filled scenes: I loved how both Lucious and Cookie remembered their past, creating a parallel with the present. Cookie couldn’t resist one minute more inside a prison, after all she suffered and Lucious just seems not to trust Andre because of his complicated past with his sick mother. For the first time I pitied Anika, she seemed so disappointed by Cookie’s refusal. I hope she will find a way to rebound.

All in all, this episode was incredibly engaging. Empire continues to keep its incredible rhythm and it just doesn’t disappoint, at all. When you could possibly think that the writers will likely choose the obvious path, they surprise you with a crazy good ending. How will Andre work again with his father? Will Hakeem and Jamal fix their relationship? Will poor Anika get a job?

And you? What do you think of Poor Yorick?
