Empire - Fires in Heaven - Review: "Empire gets its groove back"

Empire gets its groove back with its third episode. Fires in Heaven is written by Attica Locke and directed by Craig Brewer. This week's installment of Lyons' journey was an hell of an hour of television. I loved each moment of it. Let's focus on the reason why this is a great episode.
After last week's Lucious release from prison, this episode is aftermath of this game-changing event. How does his family react ? Cookie is not happy about the news. She ruins a perfect family dinner, in order to challenge Lucious. That scene was one of infinite Cookie's incredible moments. Cookie and Anika arrange a surprise performance that catches Pitbull's attention; Lucious tries to persuade Frank Gathers' daughter to sign with him; Andre and Rhonda hope their news will win Lucious' favor, but it doesn' t. Andre is kind of desperate right now. In the pilot he had a great plan for his future and a strong personality and now he is just a lost son and a confused father. I really enjoy his journey and how the writers show us his frailty.

At the end of the hour, Lucious makes his first move: he steals the new lead singer of the Lyon Dinasty's Hakeem produced group. Empire is clearly not affected by the sophomore slump. It roars and it' s totally characters driven.I love how they have shaped the new characters' relationships. This episode confirms that Empire's second season has still a lot to say. The risk of a hit drama as Empire is to go for all kind of plot twists, forgetting about the autenticity of story they are narrating. Lee Daniels is talented enough to avoid this kind of problem. Long life to Empire and with its incredible stellar ratings.. it will likely air for a while.

What do you think of Fires in Heaven?
