AHS Hotel last episode, titled "Devil’s Night" was a different episode than the first three of this season, it focused more on the Hotel and its ghosty hosts and the Lowe family than the Countess and the vampirism and I must say I disappointed me a little.
"Devil’s Night" was a good episode, quite entertaining but it felt like the story didn’t move much, it has installed some elements but only on the surface. At least we got to learn more about some of the characters and the Hotel.
I must say my favorite part of the episode was The Countess and Alex' scenes. Both Lady Gaga and Chloe Sevigny were amazing in the episode, especially in their final scene together. Following last week cliffhanger, Alex got reunited with her son and took him back home but quickly sensed something was off with him… as he bit and killed the family dog and asked for his other mommy.
He even led his mother to his glass coffin, where The Countess made her entrance and met up with Alex. The Countess wasn’t there to kill her but to make her an offer. The Countess wanted to turn Alex into one of her vampires, so she could be for eternity with her son. Oh, that’s so nice of her… Obviously there is something more at play.
Of course Alex rejected the idea at first and she asked how and why The Countess took the kid. The flashback scene to the kidnapping wasn’t much interesting but at least Gaga looked fabulous from behind. The Countess took Holden as he was neglected by his father. That was a bit weird, I really hope she has a better explanation for his kidnapping. I'm certain she picked Holden for a specific reason and it was just random. I mean I'm sure there were plenty other kids neglected by their parents, and a fair might not be the best place to get them.
Anyways, Alex finally came back to the Hotel and accepted The Countess’s offer. Another vampire is coming to the Hotel ! Great news. So Alex would be reunited with her son forever and she won’t ever lose him again. Sevigny was very touching as the hurt and loving mother. I can’t wait to see if her new vampire status will change and affect her personality, epescially her relationship with her soon-t-o be ex husband and her son, because Holden is very different from who he was before. It's a great installment and twist to have Alex Lowe as a vampire, it was interesting enough but the best part is going to be Jack Lowe finding out her and the vampires in general. And that I miss on the episode. But Jack was already being quite busy in the Hotel while his wife was being turned. After the ghosts, now vampires, poor man, the hotel has changed his whole life.
Jack was totally unaware of what was going on with his wife and lost son, as he got himself invited to the Hotel Devil’s Night, hosted by Mr March, of course.
But before that, Jack also got to meet with Aileen Wuornos played by the extraordinary Lily Rabe. Such a pity she was busy doing the bad Whispers instead of AHS this year. She totally blew me away with her performance in "Devil’s Night". First her look was astonishing, her sweet face was barely recognizable. And her voice and her attitude were just excellent, damn she was perfect. Her scenes with Bentley were very good. Bentley is absolutely great this year, I’m so glad Murphy had been back with a larger part.
Anyways, Jack and Aileen scenes were fun and very good. I get that slowly Jack Lowe is uncovering the mysteries of Hotel Cortez but maybe it was a bit long and running in circle. But it's only episode 4, I know, I don't have much patience !
So, Jack went the Devil’s Night. Mr March invited his serial killers friends to the dinner, so they could exchange about what they did and mostly kill someone. Having Zodiac and Jeffrey Dahmer at the table with Lowe handcuffed was fun, weird and very AHS. Mr March revealed he somehow inspired all those killers when they came to his hotel. And as he built the place with chutes and ladders to dispose perfectly of a body, the hotel is the best place for serial killers to hang out. Especially when they’re dead, they can kill but not be killed.
But Sally, the delicious Sarah Paulson made her entrance and changed the game for Jack. First she revealed she had an arrangement with March, she brings one person for the night and she’s free for the year. But mostly, she took care of Jack, telling him he was hallucinating with the Martini he drunk and nothing happened. There was no ghost of famous serial killers with him. It could have worked if Lowe hadn’t met with Hazel (Mare Winningham) in the beginning of the episode.
I must say her flashback to Los Angeles 1925 was my second favorite part of the episode. Winningham is an amazing actress. Her flashback was very touching, she told Lowe she had lost her son, on Halloween night. The poor boy got kidnapped and murdered because she wasn’t attentive for a moment… Just like what happened to Lowe, so they bonded. Lowe felt a connection with Hazel's case and so when he looked for her story at the police station, he found out it happened in 1925 and Hazel still look exactly the same ! That should raise some serious questions.
This episode reminded me a lot of the first season, with the big house and the ghosts. I love that atmosphere and all but I want to know more about vampires ! Ghosts, we've already seen that in Murder House, it was great ; now I want to really dig into the vampires world and mythology. Everything is now in place for that.
Hotel notes :
- No Iris ! I miss Kathy Bates and now I want to know what is happening to her since her son give her his vampire blood !
- No Angela Bassett as Ramona ! She wants the kids but for now she hasn’t done anything to get them… That we know of.
- Evan Peters is absolutely amazing this year. I think Mr March is his best character even on AHS.
- That intro scene with the couple being murdered in the room was both scary and fun.
- Am I the only one tracking Lowe ? I won't get fooled just like in Murder House with Violet !
