Following last weeks episode long foot chase, our heroes find themselves in a Fury Road inspired car chase in the appropriately titled 'Zombie Road.' Unlike last week, however, 'Zombie Road' lacked any special characters moments making it an episode that was relatively less engaging.
On top of the mayhem, 'Zombie Road' introduces the Blasters, zombies mutated from the nuclear blast. These Z's are faster, more lethal, and unaffected by Murphy's telekinesis. They are a formidable foe as they bite off their victim's face and at lightning speed, and they do not stay down easily. This is a smart direction for the show to progress to since regular zombies are no longer much of a threat due to Murphy's powers.
The survivors also have to fight off groups of bounty hunters as they travel down a hellish road with a bunch of companions led by a man named Custer. The group are on their way to Edmonton where it is freezing cold and most likely no zombies. There is not much to talk about in regards to the companions as they all end up being zombie dinner, except for Custer's nephew, Wrecking Ball. The strained relationship between Custer and his son, who was revealed to had been relegated to the sick wagon, was mentioned but never went anywhere. Another one of the troupe was the Olivia Munn look-alike Athena, who 10K was eyeing. If there is one thing this show lacks it is eye candy, and it kind of sucked to see her die so fast, but I digress.
One of the positives of 'Zombie Road' was their full focus on the main storyline. There was no Citizen Z for once! Unfortunately, we are introduced to another annoying character in Wrecking Ball who ends up becoming the third wheel alongside Murphy and Cassandra. Speaking of which, Wrecking Ball introduces the latter two to Z-Weed, which is marijuana grown from zombie compost. The substance seems to have a curative effect as Cassandra normalizes whenever she takes a whiff.
By episode's end, the team finds themselves on a new mission. They find out from Wrecking Ball that Z Weed was cooked in a food lab in Minneapolis and there is a possible cure for the virus down there. Things are starting to shape up and, after two action heavy episodes, season 2 so far has been a much more entertaining season.
