  • Modern Family
Critically lauded for revitalizing the television sitcom, “Modern Family” is also quickly cementing itself as a culturally defining series. The recipient of a record five consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, tying the Emmy record previous set by “Frasier,” and a Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy Television Series, “Modern Family” returns to the ABC Television Network for its seventh season.

The Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan is a wonderfully large and blended family with Jay Pritchett sitting at the head. By his side is his vivacious, younger second wife Gloria, and together they are navigating life with their toddler Joe, and Gloria’s teenage son Manny, who has taken to high school with the same charm and gusto he’s had since he was little. Meanwhile, Jay’s grown daughter, Claire, and her husband, Phil, are trying to keep up as their kids grow up right before their eyes with the youngest, Luke, now a junior in high school whose focus is more on the girls than on the books; middle daughter, Alex, is starting her first year at college, and eldest, Haley, is living at home as she pursues a career and love. Then there’s Claire’s brother and Jay’s grown son, Mitchell, and his husband, Cameron, who are both managing the household on a single income as Mitchell contemplates his next career move which is turning out to be a harder adjustment for their sassy adopted seven-year-old daughter Lily. These three families are unique unto themselves, and together they give us an honest and often hilarious look into the sometimes warm, sometimes twisted, embrace of the modern family.

“Modern Family” stars Ed O’Neill as Jay Pritchett, Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy, Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy, Sofia Vergara as Gloria Pritchett, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett, Eric Stonestreet as Cameron Tucker, Sarah Hyland as Haley Dunphy, Nolan Gould as Luke Dunphy, Ariel Winter as Alex Dunphy, Rico Rodriguez as Manny Delgado, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons as Lily Tucker-Pritchett and Jeremy Maguire as Joe Pritchett.

The series is produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television in association with Steven Levitan Prods and Picador Productions. Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd are co-creators/executive producers. Danny Zuker, Paul Corrigan, Brad Walsh, Abraham Higginbotham, Jeffrey Richman and Jeff Morton also serve as executive producers.

  • Last Man Standing

Tim Allen returns for a fifth season as Mike Baxter in “Last Man Standing.” New challenges greet Mike as he continues to be surrounded by forces seeking to test his ideas on just about everything in which he strongly believes.

Mike has returned from being on a fantastic two-month road trip, traveling to far-flung places for Outdoor Man, the sporting goods emporium where he is marketing director. It’s great to be back with his wife, Vanessa, and their three daughters, but finds a lot has been going on at home as well as the job since he’s been away.

Vanessa is facing the realities of her new job. She changed careers from being a geologist to a rewarding yet challenging new job as a science teacher at one of Denver’s under-funded high schools. The devoted mother is also facing an upcoming empty nest syndrome and searches for that balance between holding on and letting go.

The oldest Baxter daughter, Kristin, is no longer a single mom and has married Ryan, the father of their eight-year-old son, Boyd. She is finding success as the manager of the up-and-coming Outdoor Man Grill restaurant. But Mike’s relationship with her gets a bit complicated since she is now a key member of his work “family.”

As Kristin flourishes in her work life, Mike ends up spending more time with his liberal-leaning son-in-law Ryan, who is now applying his know-it-all approach to fatherhood. Mike considers his grandson Boyd as the other “last man standing” in his life and feels compelled to save the boy from the liberal guidance of his young parents.

The clothing design business for middle daughter, Mandy, is starting to thrive. This budding entrepreneur discovers that her father is an important emotional resource as she deals with the aggravations that accompany her drive towards success.

But that drive brings into contrast the different approaches she and her boyfriend, Kyle, take towards life. Mandy is ambitious and has big dreams, while the loyal and cheerful Kyle is content with where he is: working with his hero, Mike.

Mike must help his youngest daughter, Eve, navigate the stress of her final year of high school as she strives toward her lifelong dream of attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. But events unfold, which cause Eve to wonder where her dreams begin and where other people’s (particularly Mike’s) expectations of her end.

Chuck Larabee, Mike’s neighbor, is now the head of security at Outdoor Man. While Mike and Chuck insist that the conflict between them comes from their differences, everyone else knows it comes from their similarities. They’re both grumpy, difficult and opinionated. And proud of it.

Mike’s long-time boss and friend, Ed Alzate, finds himself learning to date again in a social media world. He depends upon Mike’s daughters, particularly Mandy, to help him navigate these strange waters (and apps). For better or worse, Ed continues to prove that age is no indication of someone’s youth.

Mike tries to escape all the drama in the warm, manly embrace of the Outdoor Man store. He still revels in his Outdoor Man video-blog, which he delightedly uses as a pulpit for his opinions and a voice to appeal to those who agree that manliness is under assault.

Through it all, Mike is a beacon of common sense amid the chaos of a larger world that keeps changing; and, according to Mike Baxter, those changes are not for the better.

“Last Man Standing” stars Tim Allen as Mike Baxter, Nancy Travis as Vanessa Baxter, Molly Ephraim as Mandy Baxter, Kaitlyn Dever as Eve Baxter, Amanda Fuller as Kristin Baxter, Jordan Masterson as Ryan Vogelson, Christoph Sanders as Kyle Anderson, Flynn Morrison as Boyd Baxter, Jonathan Adams as Chuck Larabee and Hector Elizondo as Ed Alzate.

“Last Man Standing” is created by Jack Burditt and executive-produced by Matt Berry, Tim Allen, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Shawn Levy, Richard Baker, Rick Messina, Kevin Abbott, Kevin Hench, Michael Shipley and is from Twentieth Century Fox Television.

  • The Middle

Two-time Emmy winner Patricia Heaton stars in this warm and witty single-camera comedy about raising a family and lowering your expectations. Middle-aged, middle class and living in the middle of the country in Orson, Indiana, Frankie Heck is a harried wife and mother of three who uses her wry wit and sense of humor to get her family through each day intact. Frankie works as a dental assistant, and her unflappable husband, Mike, is manager at the local quarry and her sardonic partner in the daily grind that is raising their average – yes, most definitely average – family.

But will this year finally be the year of the Hecks? It just could be, as in their own way, each family member finds themselves breaking out of their comfort zones and navigating new situations than what they’re used to.

Between juggling shifts and picking up fast food dinners eaten in front of the TV, Frankie and Mike raise their kids with love, humor and solid Midwestern practicality. Axl, the oldest, is a jock slacker who is beginning his third year of college via a sports scholarship. He lives near campus in a house with his friend and teammate, Hutch, and silent gamer, Kenny, but issues with the house may force the group to temporarily find new accommodations, which could end up impacting Frankie and Mike. This being his junior year, the business major starts getting real, and he has to navigate the adult workforce and start thinking seriously about his future. Then there’s the ever-optimistic Sue, their extraordinarily ordinary daughter, who fails at just about everything she tries with great gusto. She is starting her first year of college at the same campus that Axl attends – much to his disgust – with a new haircut and an even more optimistic view on life. She’s moving out of the house and into the dorm, but will she take college by storm — or find that navigating nightmare roommates, new challenges and living away from home for the first time test her endless optimism in new ways? As always, she will tackle this new phase of life as only Sue can. And finally there’s Brick, their quirky son, now navigating his way through eighth grade – his final year of middle school. He continues to read constantly, whisper and “whoop” to himself, as well as unapologetically march to the beat of his own drummer. But with equally quirky girlfriend Cindy wanting to take things to the next level – holding hands – Brick will find himself in new romantic territory and begin a misguided effort to become more social.

With Axl and Sue out of the house, Frankie and Mike will find themselves with an emptier nest, leaving Frankie to wonder if maybe she can at long last cut back on the parental duties — a hope that is easier said than done — as parenting is never over no matter where your kids are. New changes in the dental office will throw her into a tougher work environment, and she will discover that balancing kids and work never really gets easier — it just gets different. Mike, on the other hand, begins to wonder if raising kids, setting them free and punching a clock is all there is to his life, and he finds himself going through a bit of a midlife crisis — shocking everyone when he uncharacteristically decides to take some new chances.

Their hilarious struggles continue, but through all the madness shines a loving family, and together the Hecks are putting THE MIDDLE on the map.

“The Middle” stars Patricia Heaton as Frankie, Neil Flynn as Mike, Charlie McDermott as Axl, Eden Sher as Sue and Atticus Shaffer as Brick.

“The Middle” was created and is executive-produced by Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline. The series is from Warner Bros. Television.
