Throwback Thursday, a weekly article in which we look back at our favorite TV episodes from over the years.
I think The Crimson Hat is probably one of my favorite season finales and one my favorite episodes of The Mentalist. Bruno Heller did a great job and it's a game-changing in the show for two reasons: they have Lorelei, Red John's minion, and Jane finally tells Lisbon he loves her.
In The Crimson Hat, Jane appears to hit rock bottom as he failed again to defeat Red John. He's in Las Vegas, after 6 months away from Sacramento, where he seems to have a new life: a lover, and shoots one of his own.
Lorelei Martins
When we start watching The Crimson Hat, we are six months forward after Patrick Jane left the CBI in the previous episode. He's now living in Las Vegas, spending his nights in the casinò, drinking and being in troubles like a bad guy. During one of those crazy nights, he meets Lorelei Martins, an attractive and smart waitress and the two start talking. Between them there's an immediately chemistry, and back then I had to admit I kinda liked those two together. Lorelei Martins is still one of the best characters of the show: her fragile status, tied up to Red John, has broken when she decided she didn't want be part of that game. She's different from Lisbon as she knows how to seduce a man using her beauty. Also, she's a very lost and confused. She had no choice but join Red John. Once she knew he killed her sister, she wanted to be free and seeking revenge, but we all know she had it coming - altough this is another story. Anyway, Jane finishes his night being punched in the face by a criminal and spent the night in jail.
Teresa Lisbon
Back in Sacramento, Teresa Lisbon and her team are investigate on a murder but obviously her mind is elsewhere, thinking whether Jane will call her or not. Lisbon felt offended and useless without him, not because she needs him, but because she tried everything she could to help and he refused. So there's no reason to keep pushing when the other person clearly doesn't want to be helped. She's too proud to admit she misses him. When it comes the feelings, Jane and Lisbon are the most stubborn people in the world, do you agree? Anyway, we can all agree Patrick Jane has a thing for brunettes.
The lover & the true love
While Lisbon is wandering around the city at night, wondering what the Hell happened to Jane, he's in good company with Lorelei in his bed - also they spend the night together, the first for Jane, after his wife died, just to find out she's working for Red John. She was the gift he gave to him, since the serial killer is willing to embrace him into his world.
I liked how Bruno Heller decided to contrast Jane\Lorelei scene kissing with a lonely Lisbon walking as he wanted to show the difference between Lorelei and Teresa. Two different women, the evil and the good, lust versus love, sin against innocence. In fact the meeting between Jane and Lisbon happens in a church - Teresa, woman of faith, Patrick, the skeptical man. As a sinner realizes he has done everything wrong in his life, he turns to God for help, so Jane does when he meets Lisbon. Of course she's mad at him because she tried to call him, sending textes, but he never replied, and Jane is now asking her to second his plan to catch Red John. Son of a bit**.
Good luck, Teresa. Love you
To convince Red John he's ready to move on and join him, Jane must kill Lisbon and bring him her head. Thank God Jane has planned everything. While Wainright (remember him?) and Agent Darcy of the FBI are searching for Jane, he arrives at the CBI and gives a quick hello to his fellow colleagues, then Lisbon notices him and let him come into her office. In the dark, he hugs her tight, something that Lisbon doesn't understand at first. Jane grabs a gun and point it to her before telling "Good luck, Teresa. Love you", then a shot is heard. At this point you don't know if Lisbon's confused face is because what he told her or for the weapon.
Sooner, Wainright arrives with some agents only to find Grace Van Pelt and Kimball Cho lying down to what-it-seems Wayne Rigsby's dead body. Everyone is looking for Jane.

We're doing this for Lisbon
Of couse Jane couldn't kill Lisbon. She, Rigsby, Cho, Van Pelt and Jane are hiding at a safehouse where they're studing all the details to catch Red John. Jane apologizes to them, but everyone is very protecting around Lisbon, telling him they're doing this just for her boss. Patrick Jane forgot the first rule: If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends.
Jane goes to the meeting place where Lorelei told him to bring Lisbon's head (he's bringing a ball instead) while Teresa and her team are checking on him. "That's kinda romantic", "You're a sick man". Jane flirts with Lisbon when it's not the moment. So the time comes, but Agent Darcy (who found out Rigsby's dead body didn't match the real one) and her agents reach Lisbon and her team asking for explanations.
A game-changing
Meanwhile, Lorelei and one of Red John's man stop Jane and discover his plan. They forced him to come in the car where in the back seat, his worst enemy is sitting. Red John tells Jane that, despite he found out his plan and how he faked Lisbon and Rigsby's death. He still tries to persuade him to accept his offer and join the Dark Side.
Jane simply replies with "Go to Hell", which causes Red John's wrath. He orders Lorelei to cut one of his finger off, but luckly Agent Darcy and her team arrive just in time to arrest Lorelei and reveal who's in the back seat of the car: a dead Wainright, taped with a walkie talkie attached to his shirt. Red John is once again one step ahead.
In the end, Lorelei is taken into custody where she is interrogated by Lisbon and Jane. Lorelei tells Lisbon she slept with Jane calling him “lover” and causing Lisbon to be a little upset\jealous. She feels betrayed and shocked because Jane never told her this. A dark Jane rising as he's sure she will tell him everything about Red John and then gives her a kiss on the top of her head before exiting the room and leaving Lisbon to watch on.

Lisbon\Jane\Lorelei triangle is born here. Also, in season five we got to see a very dark Jane, determinated to get to Red John at any cost. Lisbon knew Jane's first thought is to catch the serial killer, but I think with Lorelei he crossed a line.
