  • 04:20 - Straight Outta Calabasas - Comedy with a Put Pilot Commitment Lands at FOX
Calabasas and Compton are diagonally opposite areas of Los Angeles, geographically and in virtually every other sense. The gritty city of Compton was the backdrop for the blockbuster N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton. And now the affluent Northwest suburb of Calabasas, home of a host of celebrities, is the setting of Straight Outta Calabasas, a single-camera comedy series project that has received a put pilot commitment at Fox.

The project is written/executive produced by Drawn Together creators Dave Jeserand Matt Silverstein. Here is how they describe its premise: Two profoundly white, liberal LA parents discover their 10 year-old-son is a basketball prodigy. They suddenly find themselves wrapped up in a community they can’t possibly understand, forming an unlikely friendship with a family they have nothing in common with. 20th Century Fox TV, where Jeser and Silverstein are under an overall deal, is the studio.

  • 03:10 - Empire - Season 2 Premiere - Post Mortem's
That was quite a transformation for Jamal. Why did he take his father's side over the rest of the family?

Jamal spent his entire life longing for his father's love, and he finally got it. [It's] such a big story for us in season one and such a big deal in this young man's life – to finally get his father's love and acceptance. When this divide occurs between his mother and his father and it looks to him as if Cookie might actually might have betrayed Lucious, he's torn. But he got the empire and Cookie tried to take it away from him, and he feels betrayed by her. So he takes his father's side.

TVLINE | Marisa Tomei enters the picture like a hurricane. She’s hitting on Cookie. She’s eyeing Anika like a trophy. They’re throwing her a party where bikini-clad girls are making out. I found myself a little shocked by how overt it all was, but then I had to check myself. If her character was a male business tycoon, that predatory behavior and amorality would’ve been expected. Tell me how you conceived the Mimi character. And was there any discussion of softening her or did you just dive headfirst hoping to have the maximum amount of fun?
The latter. We initially conceived of the storyline: Cookie, Hakeem and Andre — and tangentially Anika — are going to attempt this hostile takeover. We ended Season 1 with them still needing to raise a quarter of a billion dollars — how are they foing to raise it? And we said in the room: “There’s going to be a rich white man. Let’s call him Rich Whiteman for the purposes of this conversation.” This got us onto the idea of the dangers that people like Lucious Lyon open themselves up to when they take their companies public — especially when the company is an artistic endeavor so intrinsic to their person. You expose yourself to being appropriated, to having your art taken away from you or having it changed. And that’s the story we’re telling. We wanted to start with Cookie — and having Lucious turn things around on her.
As we talked about the arc, we realized Rich Whiteman was an important character — and he also needed to be an interesting one. At that point, someone in the room — I can’t remember who — said, “Let’s make her a lesbian.” Actually, it was probably me. And we just had some fun with the idea of the lesbian billionaire. We talked about all those male conventions you were referring to, but why not play with them? Nobody tried to pull us back, and we just went for it.

TVLINE | Grace Gealey is amazing in this episode. I don’t think anything could’ve prepared me for Anika’s ass-shake.
It was really fun to watch both of those actresses [Marisa and Grace] find their characters. Grace knows Anika so well, but that moment was something new. We knew what was going to happen in that scene, but we didn’t know what Grace was going to do in that moment when she had to dance with Mimi. It was so fabulous.

TVLINE | How many episodes do you have Marisa Tomei for? Where is that arc going to take us?
Mimi is with us for five episodes. That storyline pays off in our midseason finale — Episode 10. — airing sometime in December. I’ll just say it builds to a glorious and hopefully unexpected conclusion.

  • 12:00 - BBC Orders Dramas From Matt Charman, Peter Moffat & More
BBC executives on Tuesday night celebrated the U.K. public broadcaster's fall TV season launch and unveiled new drama and comedy commissions.

The BBC announced some details on The Cormoran Strike Mysteries, based on the crime novels by J.K. Rowling under her Robert Galbraith pseudonym, and newly announced a retelling of the fall of Troy, adaptations of novels To Sir with Love‎ and Rush of Blood and a season of comedy to celebrate the 60th anniversary in 2016 of the first BBC sitcom, ‎Hancock's Half Hour.

Dickensian is set within the fictional realms of Charles Dickens’ novels and brings together some of literature’s most iconic characters, including Scrooge, Fagin and Miss Havisham. "With a wealth of back stories sourced from the novels, Dickensian delivers fast-paced storylines with surprising twists and turns," according to a show description.

Here are more details on some of the new shows and programming initiatives:

    Landmark Sitcom Season
BBC One "will mark our enduring affection for all the great comedy characters we have met over the 60 years by enlisting the biggest names in British comedy writing and performing to revisit loved classics alongside launching new shows in a landmark comedy season," the BBC said.

    ‎The Cormoran Strike Mysteries
Based on Galbraith's The Cuckoo's Calling and The Silkworm, as well as the upcoming Career of Evil, set for publication this fall. ‎
War veteran-turned-private detective Strike investigates crimes with his female assistant Robin.‎ The series is made by the author's Bronte Film and Television, the producer of The Casual Vacancy. Sarah Phelps (The Casual Vacancy) will adapt The Cuckoo’s Calling, while Ben Richards (The Tunnel, Fortitude) will adapt The Silkworm. Julian Farino (Entourage, The Office) will direct.

Troy: The Fall of a City
David Farr's multi-part series promises to retell the fall of Troy and the collapse of a family. "The story of the war between Greece and Troy is an epic tale of love, revenge, intrigue and bloodshed," according to a show description. "Told from the perspective of the Trojan family at the heart of the siege, Farr’s psychologically rich and sweeping narrative goes back to the saga’s origins: to the judgment of Paris, his passionate elopement with Helen and the ill-starred prophecy surrounding his birth." The show is produced by Kudos, part of Endemol Shine.

    To Sir with Love
The 90-minute adaptation by Hanif Kureishi is based on the autobiographical novel by ER Braithwaite and made by Rainmark Films.‎

    Rush of Blood
Adapted from the best-selling Mark Billingham novel by Matt Charman, the three hour-long episodes are being made by Murderous Productions/On the Corner Limited.‎ "Three couples return from their holiday together in Florida and realize that one of them must have been responsible for a murder," a show description says.
