The Muppets - Pig Girls Don’t Cry – Review: "Interesting, but not perfect"

I’ve been waiting for the return of Jim Henson’s The Muppets since May Upfronts’ announcement. The Muppets has always entertained me in the best way possible. The characters are literally hilarious and it is impossible not to fall in love with them. So my expectations were high for this premiere. Did it disappoint me? No, but it could have been better. I will tell you why.

"Pig Girls Don't Cry" is the title of the pilot which was written by Bill Prady and Bob Kushell who are most known for their contribution to The Big Bang Theory. The first episode’s setting is a behind-the-scenes of a Late Night show, starring Miss Piggy. Kermit is the executive producer of the show, and he has to handle Miss Piggy’s requests professionally. They have recently broken up and their relationship now is apparently job-related only. Can they work it out? Kermit seems to have moved on. He has a new girlfriend and he is clearly attracted by pigs.

The episode was mostly entertaining, but not as funny as I expected. The show is likely suffering the usual pilot-related problems: they need to set up the show and it’s not easy in twenty minutes. I loved Fozzie's storyline and how they managed to give proper space to the guest stars. Elizabeth Banks and Imagine Dragons were great in their brief appearances and I loved how they added a flashback to show Kermit and Miss Piggy’s past. But it still lacks of The Muppets’ magic. There were some static moments, and sometimes the episode was funny and entertaining but not hilarious. The Muppets has conquered me years ago, because of its unique and heart-filling way of telling everyday’s stories. It has space to improve and it needs to, because this weekly dose of The Muppets’ will likely become addictive.

ABC has been promoting the hell out of it. The ratings will likely tell us what The Muppets’ future will be like. Even if I am not 100% sold, I am definitely watch the following episodes of the show.

What do you think of "Pig Girls Don't Cry"?
