Note: The Monday Night Football match-up on ESPN was Kansas City vs. Green Bay. The ABC affiliates in Kansas City and Milwaukee aired the game (which could have inflated ABC’s overnight performance).
NBC opened this second week of the new TV season on another winning overnight note care of its combination of two hours of “The Voice” (8.0 rating/12 share from 8-10 p.m.), which placed first from 8:30-10 p.m., and week two of drama “Blindspot” (#1: 5.9/10), which just received a script order for an additional nine episodes. Comparably, “Blindspot” dipped by a typical 17 percent from its 7.1/12 overnight debut one week earlier, which translated into 10.61 million viewers and a 3.1 rating/10 share in adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). Overnight retention for “Blindspot” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (8.5/13) was 69 percent (versus 76 percent from one week earlier).
In other week two news, CBS sitcom “Life in Pieces” dropped by 19 percent from week one with a 5.8/ 9 in the overnight households at 8:30 p.m. Comparably, retention out of “The Big Bang Theory” (#1 for the night: 10.3/16) was only 56 percent, and a 7.2/11 one week earlier translated into 11.28 million viewers and a 2.6/ 8 in adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). While no show can fully maintain the audience from lead-in “The Big Bang Theory,” an expected low 2-rating in the demo out of Sheldon and Leonard and company is just not an acceptable performance. Is anyone else thinking “The Millers” here?
Week two of Fox drama “Minority Report,” meanwhile, dipped to a 1.9/ 3 (#4) from 9-10 p.m., which was 17 percent below the anemic 2.3/ 4 debut one week earlier. Comparably, overnight retention for “Minority Report” out of “Gotham” (#4: 3.4/ 5 at 8 p.m.) was only 56 percent, and this was 44 percent below year-ago time period occupant “Sleepy Hollow” (3.4/ 5 on 9/29/14). That 2.3 overnight rating last week resulted in only 3.10 million viewers and a 1.1/ 3 in adults 18-49. Tick, tock…the cancellation clock could already be ticking.
Airing out of the CBS comedies last night was sophomore drama “Scorpion” at a third-place 6.6/10 from 9-10 p.m., which built by 14 percent from “Life and Pieces.” One week earlier the season premiere of “Scorpion” scored a 7.2/11 (which equaled 11.09 million viewers and a 2.2/ 7 in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data). But this was 24 percent below the 8.7/13 on the year-ago night. And “NCIS: Los Angeles” capped off the for the Eye net at a second-place 5.2/ 9 at 10 p.m., which is only likely to translate into about a 1.2 rating in adults 18-49. Year-to-year, “NCIS: Los Angeles” dropped by 13 percent in the overnights.
Over at ABC, older skewing “Dancing With the Stars” was flat from one week earlier at a 7.9/12 from 8-10 p.m., which was a minor loss of seven percent from the 8.5/13 in the overnights one year earlier. Anticipate about 11.5 million viewers and a 1.8 rating in the demo in adults 18-49. Veteran “Castle” at 10 p.m. was also flat at a 4.7/ 8 (#3) in the overnights, which was a loss of a hefty 34 percent from the 7.1/12 one year earlier and 41 percent from “Dancing With the Stars.”
The CW ducked from the competition with its line-up of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” (#5: 1.0/ 2 at 8 p.m.), “Whose Line is it Anyway? (0.9/ 1 at 9 p.m.) and failing sitcom “Significant Mother” (#5: 0.5/ 1).
