On your mark, get set…go! NBC opened the 2015-16 TV season on a winning household overnight note, besting No. 2 CBS and No. 3 ABC by 5 percent and 13 percent, respectively. But all three networks, plus Fox, were down from their year-ago opening overnight levels.
Keep in mind that the football match-up on ESPN last night was the New York Jets vs. Indianapolis.
Tops for the night, as expected, was the ninth season-premiere of CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory” at an 11.6 rating/18 share in households, which was three percent above the 11.3/18 on the year-ago evening. Anticipate in the vicinity of 18-million viewers and a mid-5 rating in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data, for “Big Bang.”
Airing out of Sheldon and Leonard and company was the series-premiere of CBS sitcom “Life in Pieces,” which was adequately sampled at a 7.2/11 (#3) at 8:30 p.m. With a loss of 38 percent from “The Big Bang Theory,” which was expected, look for an initial delivery of about 11-million viewers and a 3-rating in the demo for “Life in Pieces.” And keep in mind that most new series drop 10 to 20 percent in week two.
Sticking with the Eye net, drama “Scorpion” kicked-off season two with a very respectable 7.2/11 in households from 9-10 p.m., which was 19 percent below its 8.9/13 series launch on the year-ago evening and equal to lead-in “Life in Pieces.” Expect a low-to-mid-2 rating in adults 18-49 for the “Scorpion” return. And season seven of “NCIS: Los Angeles” capped off the night with a second-place 5.3/ 9 at 10 p.m., which trailed the series-premiere of competing NBC drama “Blindspot” (#1: 7.1/12) by 25 percent. One year earlier, “NCIS: Los Angeles” opened with a 6.0/10 in the time period (on 9/29/14).
Comparably, “Blindspot” opened 18 percent above the debut of former fall time period occupant “State of Affairs” (6.0/10 on 11/17/14), which translated into 8.69 million viewers and a 2.2/ 7 in adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). And the overnight retention for “Blindspot” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (8.4/13) was more than adequate at 85 percent. Consider this a “winning” start for “Blindspot.”
Overall, “The Voice” returned with an 8.0/12 in households from 8-10 p.m., which was close to year-ago opening levels and up by 13 percent from its spring finale (7.0/11 on Tuesday, May 19).
The other series premiere on the night was Fox drama “Minority Report,” which was stalled at the gate at a mere 2.3/ 4 from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, this was 39 percent below the already diluted season-opening levels for “Sleepy Hollow” one year earlier (3.8/ 6 on 9/22/14), and it dipped from the below-average 3.2/ 5 for the second season premiere of lead-in “Gotham” (3.2/ 5 from 8-9 p.m.) by 28 percent. Keeping in mind again that most new series drop 10 to 20 percent in week two, that proverbial cancellation clock could already be ticking on “Minority Report.”
“Gotham,” meanwhile, was 44 percent below its inflated 5.7/ 9 series-opener one year earlier (5.7/ 9 on 9/22/14), and will have to be heavily dependent on the potential DVR usage and social media buzz. Based on the overnights, “Gotham” is indeed a loser.
Over at ABC, week two of the new fall season of “Dancing With the Stars” dipped to a still respectable 7.9/12 in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m., which was 13 percent below the 9.1/14 one week earlier (and equal to the year-ago evening). But the eighth season-premiere of “Castle” is showing its age with a last-place 4.7/ 8 at 10 p.m. and erosion of 39 percent from the 9:30 p.m. portion of “Dancing With the Stars” (7.7/12). Comparably, “Castle” was a hefty 34 percent below the 7.1/12 year-ago season premiere (on 9/29/14), and it could translate into only about a 1.5 rating in adults 18-49. ABC would have been better off airing promising “Blood & Oil” in the Monday 10 p.m. hour, which would fit well out of female-driven “Dancing With the Stars” (and would not have to face NBC’s “Sunday Night Football”).
The CW, which is ducking from the new season competition this week, populated this first night of the new TV season with “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” (#5: 1.1/ 2), a repeat of “Whose Line is it Anyway?” (#5: 0.7/ 1) and failing sitcom “Significant Mother” (#5: 0.4/ 1).

About the Daily Ratings - Please Read 1st if new to ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.
