NCIS: Los Angeles - Active Measures (Season Opener) - Advance Preview: "Perfect Start to the Season"

“NCIS: Los Angeles” fans, gear up! Season seven is about to begin, and if the first episode is any indication, I think fans are really going to like what they see. The opening episode is intense and exciting, and it makes great use of all its main characters. The plot was interesting, the characters were fun and you’ll definitely see some unexpected moments that made me scream out loud! I love it when moments catch you by surprise like that.

The episode, titled “Active Measures,” centers on Callen going “rogue.” He’s on a secret mission the team doesn’t know about, and Sam especially wants to figure out what is going on with his partner. I loved seeing Callen in this light. We see a bearded, scruffy Callen who is intent on finding out certain information. He is much more intense than usual, becoming almost obsessed with his goals. And he doesn’t want to involve anyone around him.

It was really fun to watch Chris O’Donnell play this different side of Callen. “G” has a lot of attitude in this episode – even toward the people he loves most. Callen isn’t about to take anyone’s crap. And it looks like he is harboring anger about what happened with Arkady (who was shot in the season finale and seemingly escaped, though no one really knows where he is and if he is actually alive). In fact, Callen appears desperate. Just how far will he go to get the information he wants? He certainly doesn’t want to listen to his team. Will he ever stop isolating himself when he wants something badly?

I loved the dynamics between Sam and Callen here, constantly pushing and pulling. Callen is pushing Sam away and Sam is trying to pull Callen in and let him know he is there for him. You see a tension between them that is fascinating to watch, but you also see peeks of the deep friendship that we have grown to love. Will Callen eventually rely on that bond?

You can expect a couple great scenes between Hetty and Sam as they argue over what to do about Callen. These scenes were fantastic! And I was surprised by a scene between Callen and Hetty, too. Actually two scenes. Let’s just say you won’t expect what happens in one of them – and the interaction between their characters was great in their last scene together. Hetty isn’t afraid to use some tough love on Callen.

And Densi fans – get ready for some squealing. I don’t want to give anything away, but the writers seem to have listened to fans and are going “all in” with this relationship. I was shocked at something that happened in the first Densi scene. (Which shows the couple working out on the beach together – although Kensi is working a lot more than Deeks!) This was a fun scene. I think people are going to like it.

I also loved that the writers haven’t forgotten about the LAPD internal investigation into Deeks. Kensi and Deeks talk about it together – and we find out (for the most part) if Deeks really knows what the department could be investigating. I’m thrilled the show is finally advancing this storyline.

Another thing that made me happy was seeing Eric and Nell working on the case. At one point Eric asks for Sam’s help. Those two are always funny together. It was great watching every one of the characters featured in this episode. Granger is working his usual angles, too.

By the way, get ready for the return of two old characters: CIA officer Sabatino (Erik Palladino), who may have some answers about Callen. And Anatoli Kirkin (Ravil Isyanov), last seen in the season 4 episode “Wanted.” If your memory is bad like mine, here’s a little refresher: The team faked Kirkin’s death in order to maintain Sam’s wife Michelle’s undercover identity as an assassin for arms dealer Isaak Sidorov. Sidorov had ordered the murder of Kirkin, one of his rivals. In that episode, Kirkin had a little thing for Deeks as they met in a Russian bathhouse. You can expect that to be brought up all over again as the team ribs Deeks about it and Kirkin wants to see his “cute fairy one” again. This was all really funny.

I have to say, this episode made me really excited for the rest of the season. I think it’s the perfect opening episode for fans. I can’t wait for you all to see it and hear what you think!
