The studio made a slew of other changes to its calendar, including announcing that Dwayne Johnson-starrer Jungle Cruise will open in theaters on Oct. 11, 2019, while Angelina Jolie's Maleficent 2 will hit theaters on May 29, 2020.
Judith Shekoni has joined the cast of “Maleficent 2.” The British actress is coming off two seasons of Antoine Fuqua drama series “Ice” for AT&T’s Audience network in which she played the female lead, Lady Rah, opposite Donald Sutherland.
“Maleficent” was loosely based on Sleeping Beauty, but little is yet known about the sequel. Shekoni will star as Shrike, a character who befriends the titular anti-hero, Maleficent, who is once again played by Angelina Jolie. Filming is underway at Pinewood Studios in the U.K.

EXCLUSIVE: British actor David Gyasi has joined the cast of Disney’s Maleficent 2, the sequel to 2014’s $759M worldwide grosser.
Harris Dickinson, who portrays J. Paul Getty III in FX’s limited series “Trust,” is set to play the prince and love interest of Elle Fanning in Disney’s “Maleficent 2,” sources tell Variety.
Angelina Jolie will return to star as the title character with Michelle Pfeiffer in negotiations to play Dickinson’s mother, and Ed Skrein on board to play one of the the villains. Dickinson’s role was played by Brenton Thwaites in the first pic, but due to schedule conflicts with his TV show “Titans,” where he plays Dick Grayson/Robin, he was unable to return for the role.
Michelle Pfeiffer is in advanced talks to join Disney’s sequel of its hit “Maleficent,” starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning.
If a deal closes, Pfeiffer is on board to play the queen in the movie.
Joe Roth is producing the film, with Jez Butterworth and Linda Woolverton penning the latest script. Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster wrote the most recent draft.
“Deadpool” actor Ed Skrein is in final negotiations to join Disney’s “Maleficent” sequel.
Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning are returning to starring in the fantasy film, with “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” helmer Joachim Ronning to direct.
Exact details behind Skrein’s villain role are currently under wraps.
EXCLUSIVE: Joachim Rønning, who helmed Jerry Bruckheimer’s and Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, is in talks to direct another Disney tentpole franchise: the sequel to the studio’s 2014 worldwide box office hit Maleficent. Angelina Jolie confirmed to Deadline earlier this month that she was going to return as the lead character based on the nemesis first introduced in the studio’s 1959 fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. The project is expected to go before the cameras in the first quarter of 2018.
Jez Butterworth and Linda Woolverton had been working on the script for producer Joe Roth, we’ve been told.
With four directorial achievements under her belt I asked if she had another one lined up but she told me it is time to return to acting for a while. “I am now the breadwinner for the family so it’s time, ” she laughed . There were rumors that she might be doing Universal’s Bride Of Frankenstein but she said she is going back to Disney to do Maleficent 2. “We have been working on the script and this is going to be a really strong sequel,” she said, excited by the prospect of returning to that Disney villainess.
Disney has begun moving toward a sequel to Maleficent, the 2014 blockbuster fairy tale that starred Angelina Jolie as the winged title character. The studio has engaged Linda Woolverton to write the sequel, and I'm told the studio is keeping Jolie in the loop and that the sequel will be written for her to reprise.
