ABC Buys Shondaland Army Medical Drama

Shondaland is venturing into the medical field once again for a new project the Shonda Rhimes-led production company just sold to ABC, a network that already houses Rhimes’ Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and the upcoming The Catch.

The untitled project — which is not a spin-off — is helmed by writer and executive producer Zoanne Clack, who’s served as both a producer and writer on Grey’s, and focuses on a U.S. Army Medevac team operating out of a Baghdad base camp in 2004. Rhimes and Betsy Beers — who’s worked as a producer on all three of the Shondaland shows currently airing — are attached to executive produce.

As any Grey’s fan knows, medicine isn’t a new topic for Rhimes — and neither is the army, necessarily: Kevin McKidd joined the show in 2008 as Owen Hunt, a U.S. Army surgeon struggling with PTSD after returning from Iraq. Since then, his connection to the army has played a large part in his character’s development, and he even brought April Kepner (Sarah Drew) overseas with him in the most recent season.

Can’t wait for this new drama? Don’t worry: Shondaland’s current trio returns to the air Thursday on ABC beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
