  • 23: 30 - Guilt - ABC Family Pilot - Billy Zane, Daisy Head, Zachary Fall, Katrina Law & Kevin Ryan Cast in Series Regular Roles
ABC Family is rounding out its cast for drama pilot Guilt from writers/executive producers Nichole Millard and Kathryn Price (The Game Plan) and executive producer Stephen McPherson.

Billy Zane (Titanic), Daisy Head (Endeavour), Zachary Fall (Crossing Lines) Katrina Law (Arrow) and Kevin Ryan (Copper) have landed series regular roles on the pilot, a fictional story that draws parallels to the story of Amanda Knox, the American student convicted, acquitted, retried and acquitted again of the gruesome murder of her British roommate in Italy. Guilt is described as an edgy, soapy thriller that revolves around an American in London who becomes the prime suspect in the savage murder of her roommate. As the investigation unfolds, the show will question whether she’s a naive young girl whose poor decisions are being magnified under the ruthless glare of the British tabloids or whether she’s a sociopath who brutally murdered her friend.

Zane, repped by Undergound, plays Stan Gutterie, an American defense attorney working in London. His law firm banished him to the UK after he ran afoul of one too many judges in the U.S. Head is Grace, an American attending college in London when her Irish flat mate is found brutally murdered at their place. Fall plays Luc, Grace’s boyfriend in London; Law is Olivia, Grace’s older sister; and Ryan, repped by Atlas Artists, Gersh and 42 Management in the UK, plays Patrick, Molly’s older brother.

  • 10:00 - Report Finds Wide Diversity Gap Among 2014’s Top-Grossing Films
The numbers are stunning: From 2007 through 2014, women made up only 30.2 percent of all speaking or named characters in the 100 top-grossing fictional films released in the United States. That’s bad enough to repeat: For every 2.3 male characters who say “Dude,” there is just one woman saying, “Hello?!”

That is one of the findings in a study, “Inequality in 700 Popular Films,” being released on Wednesday, that looks at gender, race, ethnicity and what one of the report’s researchers, Stacy L. Smith, describes as an “epidemic” when it comes to lack of diversity. The report was produced by the Media, Diversity & Social Change Initiative at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

The report is crammed with numbers that show the extent of this misrepresentation when movies like “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” hit screens:

The movies are white: 73.1 percent of all the speaking or named characters in the top 100 movies were white.

The movies are straight: Only 19 total characters were lesbian, gay or bisexual — none were transgender.

The movies are young: Only 19.9 percent of female characters were 40 to 64 years old.

The movies are male: Only 1.9 percent of the movies were directed by women.

Even many casual observers may now be aware of the hurdles facing female directors, particularly when they try to storm the big studios. Yet those problems, as this latest study confirms, are simply part of a far larger picture. In 2014, not a single title in the top-grossing 100 fictional films starred a woman over 45. One reason is that Meryl Streep, the hardest-working woman in cinema, had only supporting roles, including in the Disney musical “Into the Woods.” That fractured fairy tale at least featured several women in pivotal roles, which isn’t the case in most movies, family-friendly or not. According to the “Inequality” report, for 2014, “girls/women make up less than a third of all speaking characters on screen and less than a quarter of the leads/co-leads driving the story lines.” For instance, that year, women made up only 21.8 percent of the speaking or named characters in action and adventure movies, where male superheroes and all manner of other bros dominate.

  • 09:50 - Bitten - My Fanbase Interview with Steve Lund
Thanks to Philomina for the heads up.
Unlike other supernatural shows "Bitten" focuses more on the human side of the werewolfs. Does it make it easier to play a werewolf?

We don't often find ourselves concerned with the wolf aspect of the show while we're on set, only because that human side of it is so abundantly present in the material. For each situation we find ourselves in as wolves, we relate as actors to themes of identity, legacy, love and family. When you think of it in those terms, it becomes very playable.

Your character Nick was born as a werewolf and grew up knowing what would eventually happen to him. Do you think because he knew about his families legacy, that what happened to him in season 2, falling in love with Paige, kind of scared him, because it's something, he doesn't really know?

Nick has always been warned of getting too close to somebody and was weary, often exhibiting opposite behavior, but he never fully understood his fathers lessons until he met Paige. There has always been a yearning to understand himself on a deeper level but he never truly knew how to explore that. When Paige came into his life, it was clear that this was the piece he was missing and needed to explore. He knew it could come at a cost, but it was about measuring the worth of his experience and what Paige gave him was invaluable.

  • 03:15 - Blood and Oil - New Showrunner Named Again
Thanks to Darkness for the heads up.

There's trouble brewing on ABC's freshman drama Blood and Oil.

The drama starring Don Johnson as an oil baron has changed showrunners, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed, with Jon Harmon Feldman (No Ordinary Family, Dirty Sexy Money) taking over the reins from Cynthia Cidre.

Worse: The news about the showrunner change came out after the cast and producers presented the show to a roomful of about 200 critics at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, where producers on hand Tony Krantz, Josh Pate and Rodes Fishburne(who all developed the show) were asked about Cidre's whereabouts: "For the producers, can you talk about Cynthia Cidre's role as co-exec producer/showrunner, and is there a reason she's not here today?"

"She had a personal thing that she could not be here today," Krantz said. "She's an executive producer on the show. We love her. She's part of the family of what we're doing."

Asked after the panel why producers didn't address the showrunner change, an ABC spokesperson told THR that the question was only about Cidre's whereabouts, not if the show was making a change.
