Suits has two types of episodes, the light and the dark ones, I can't think of any in between right now, maybe there's got to be some. There are episodes like last week's, easy to follow, the cases and relationships paralleling each other; and there are episodes like Hitting Home.
This episode was a roller coaster of emotions, even hard to keep up with at times. Between the complex cases, and the relationships dynamics, there were more than a few elements foreshadowing what happened in that final sequence.
Privilege ended with Harvey accepting he had a problem with his mother and trying to overcome it in therapy. This episode starts with a flashback of little Harvey finding his mum cheating on his dad. He's retelling this to Dr Agard who is proud of him for getting in touch with his feelings. (You're not alone Agard)
This episode is weird because Harvey doesn't have a legal case, he's more preoccupied with his own problems. One is being at odds with Donna. We find out they had a celebratory anniversary dinner for every year they worked together. She forgot to delete the date in his calendar so he asks her to play along, suppose she did that on purpose and goes out to have dinner with him all the same. She points out there's nothing to celebrate and he convinces her saying he doesn't want to just have a decent relationship with her, but wants to be friends again.
They go out to dinner, he's having a good time, says they should this often. Donna replies Mitchell wouldn't like it. She's been seeing someone and he's quite the opposite of what her ex boss is. And then there's the point of no return; she tells him she knows he's sleeping with Esther and he should tell Louis. It was only once and she should mind her own business. he answers. Someone should teach Harvey friends do not mind their own business... oh, well.
This conversation is important because Donna then has to cover for Harvey, Louis suspects about him and Esther. Donna doesn't like to lie but she does. This is why Harvey and Donna's amicable terms don't last much, she confronts him again about this situation and Harvey bites back. He gets distracted at his therapy session because of this and when he finally comes clean to Agard about what's bothering him, she tells him he's cheating, he's putting Donna in a difficult position and he's hiding things from people he cares about, it does sound like an affair. He storms out angry.
Peace at PSL doesn't last long. Esther comes and asks Harvey on a date, he doesn't give her the cold shoulder, he treats her baddly, and she cancels her dinner with Louis and Donna. Louis adds two plus two and confronts Harvey. They fight, Louis yells some angry truths to him, Harvey asks him to stop, he doesn't and he punches him. (Harvey needs to go back to his boxing training, so he can let out some steam) Jessica comes in and asks him to leave.
The episode ends, and we know next week is going to be a dark episode again, probably even darker than this one.
But before the episode ends there's plot B and C. Plot B is related to Harvey's story line, it shows Louis struggles with his relationships and how he is always feeling like somebody else's shadow. Esther asks for help after Harvey neglected it, and Louis thinks he was her sister's first choice. Rachel works with Louis this week, and the way she asks to be in it is quite funny and cute at the same time. They make a good team, but something about how they handle the case backfires. Esther and Louis don't agree on almost anything, but in the end, after a big fight, they make up.
Amy Acker is great, I don't need to point that out, but I don't praise Rick Hoffman enough (see side notes) This scene shows the essence of why Louis Litt is not quite the guy you love to hate but more of the guy you sometimes can relate too and other times hate with all your being and want to kick him to the curb. (Which happens in that last sequence, because he could have listened or handled things better)
Plot C brings Mike working close to Jack Soloff, who turns out not to be the guy we thought he was, He's more of a Louis, wanting to gain Jessica's respect and to get noticed. He's a hard worker, with whom we may or not agree, but when he rejects Hardman we could believe he's not a bad guy, he's not a good guy either. He even proposes Mike to become partner. And this is what is going to happen during the last part of the season, not another power struggle, at least not the one we were thinking of. Mike will have to ponder about this move considering he's not a real lawyer, and this doesn't affect just him.
Maybe Hardman will appear again, and the power struggle we thought was possible is going to happen, at least, it seems like he doesn't have an inside spy anymore. However, I should know better than to trust people inside Pearson Specter Litt.
