Proof - St. Luke's - Review
Aug 3, 2015
AL Proof ReviewsComing off of last week’s episode of Proof that I really enjoyed, I had extremely high hopes for this episode entitled St. Luke’s. Did those expectations I had measure up? Not really. The episode wasn’t bad but it was lacking in some areas for me to really enjoy it. One of those areas was not having Ivan in this episode at all. Before last week’s episode that wouldn’t have bothered me as much but now that I’ve really come to enjoy his character and his interactions he has with Carolyn that was a big disappointment for me. Especially when they left us on a cliffhanger about Ivan having the surgery to remove the tumour from his brain. I’m looking forward to know how things turn out for him.
Peter Van Owen was back in this episode which I thought I would have been happy about. As I have been waiting to see more of his storyline, since we haven’t been given much information on him. I was hoping that he was going to be one of those characters that you love to hate and end up really enjoying watching. Especially when their interactions with others cause some really enjoyable friction onscreen. He wasn’t as entertaining this week to me. He seemed like a self-centred jerk that enjoyed playing games. I’m referring to when Van Owen finds out that Carolyn isn’t working on the case with Zed and Janel he says he’s not interested in helping them. I’m hoping I’m wrong because I feel that the writers potentially have a great storyline there but right now I can’t say I’m liking where they are taking his character. That being said I’m going to hope that he will be that guy that you just love to hate.
There isn’t many medical/sci-fi drama’s out there right now, and the more I watch this show the more I’m surprised about how supernatural they are taking it. I love the idea of this medical team questioning what happens after you die. Is there life after death? Though to me that seems like a completely different question from is there ghosts out there? That’s what the basis of this episode was and that could be another reason why this wasn’t their best episode in my opinion. In fact it has me questioning how far out there are they going to take this show with the supernatural. As we saw Carolyn interact with a Priest in the old church, I found myself thinking is that supposed to be a ghost? I’m still not sure if they were alluding to that or if he was a figment of Carolyn’s imagination. Unanswered questions seems to be the theme of this series so maybe there’s a reason for all of this.
We get more of a backstory to Carolyn this week when we meet her parents. The story itself of her having a strict military father that was really tough on her growing up isn’t that original. That being said it was one of the enjoyable aspects of this episode. It allowed us to learn more about how Carolyn blamed herself for Will’s death and that even though It was Len’s fault she took the blame for the marriage falling apart just because she knows that her father loved Len and thought of him as a son. I certainly wouldn’t do that but it made me like Carolyn even more. Even Len surprised me by telling the truth when he found out that his father-in-law didn’t know the real story of what happened between Carolyn and him.
What I’m really happy to see is this show continuing to give us more of a character driven drama rather than a procedure and case driven series. I just wish that they would stop leaving out characters for whole episodes. The cases might be interesting and fun to watch but its the characters that keep me coming back for more. What did you think about Proof’s St. Luke’s?
