19th January 2019 - Ruth Bader Ginsburg to Cameo

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is stepping out in a new role — a gavel-wielding minifigure in "The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part."

Ginsburg does fit into the story, which features siblings playing with a Lego universe. The pioneering Supreme Court Justice's brief role is part of the creative younger sister's universe, says Mitchell.

Ginsburg was not required for voice work in the cameo. But filmmakers reached out to her office to seek approval for the appearance.

"She said, 'Of course, I'd love to be a Lego figure. That would be cool,' " says Mitchell.

Mike Mitchell can't stop the feeling that everything will be awesome.

The director of DreamWorks Animation's hit Trolls has been hired to helm the Lego Movie sequel for Warner Bros. Animation.

Rob Schrab was previously named director, but sources say a parting of ways occurred due to "creative differences."

  • 20th April 2015 - Release Date Moved
Warner Bros. has unveiled its master plan for its upcoming Lego movies, staking out release dates for the next three movies in the franchise.

Finally, The Lego Movie Sequel — yes, that is the title — will open May 18, 2018. The new date pushes up the movie by a week.

  • 25th February 2014 - Rob Schrab to Replace Chris McKay as Director
We are happy to announce that Director Rob Schrab (TV’s “Community,” “The Mindy Project”) will mark his feature directorial debut overseeing construction on “The LEGO® Movie Sequel,” the eagerly awaited follow-up to the worldwide sensation The LEGO Movie.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who wrote and directed The LEGO Movie, are writing the new feature based on a story by Lord, Miller, Jared Stern and Michelle Morgan. In addition, Lord and Miller will serve as producers, alongside returning producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee. Lord and Miller said, “We are so excited to collaborate with Rob. He is a comedy genius, a visual savant, and we have been stalking him for years. No one works harder than Rob, and his aesthetic, combined with his sense of humor, bring a strong, unique, thoughtful, and passionately nerdy voice to this project. People who know him are slapping their foreheads today and saying, ‘Of course!’”

  • 25th October 2014 - Phil Lord and Chris Miller to Write Script
Phil Lord and Chris Miller have signed on with Warner Bros to write The Lego Movie sequel. They wrote and directed the first film, but it has been an open question of whether they would return beyond producing the sequel. It’s a big step for Warner Bros to broaden the franchise. No word on whether they’ll direct it. The first film grossed $468 million worldwide, the third highest grossing film of the year so far. It was also a stylish transfer of a branded toy whose transfer to narrative feature was hardly an easy feat and it puts The Lego Movie squarely in the Best Animated Feature category for the Oscars. Warner Bros has already dated the sequel for May 26, 2017. Dan Lin and Roy Lee are producing with Lord & Miller, and Jill Wilfert, Matt Ashton, Chris McKay and Kara Lord Piersimoni are exec producers. WB’s Greg Silverman, Courtenay Valenti and Chris Defaria are overseeing.

  • 12th March 2014 - Chris McKay to Direct
Warner Bros has set Chris McKay to direct its sequel to The Lego Movie, the film that opened last month and has so far turned in a worldwide gross of $361 million. McKay was animation co-director on the first film that was made under the direction of Phil Lord & Chris Miller. That duo is producing, and Michelle Morgan & Jared Stern are writing a treatment for the next installment. They are still working all this out, but this will be straight sequel, even though the studio is contemplating a spinoff film that broadens the Lego empire by focusing on the character Ninjago.

  • 21st February 2014 - Release Date Revealed
Following an appropriately awesome (and still growing) box office for their The LEGO Movie, Warner Bros. Pictures has officially set a release date for an untitled sequel: May 26, 2017! No details are yet available as far as exactly what shape the sequel will take but, as previously reported, Jared Stern and Michelle Morgan will provide the screenplay.

Now in theaters, The LEGO Movie follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

  • 3rd February 2014 - Warner Bros. Working on Sequel
Warner Bros. has already begun work on a sequel to “The Lego Movie,” the upcoming animated film based on the popular kids’ toys, according to two individuals with knowledge of the studio’s plans. Jared Stern, who wrote “The Internship” and “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” is working on the script with Michelle Morgan (“Girl Most Likely”).

Advanced market research indicates “The Lego Movie” will be a huge hit, grossing upwards of $40 millon this weekend. It should breeze to a win at the box office over fellow new releases “the Monuments Men” and “Vampire Academy.”
