3rd November 2016 - Release Date Pushed to Summer 2017
The Dark Tower, the long-in-the-works adaptation of the Stephen King fantasy series, has been moved off its current February 2017 release date by Sony Pictures. It will now be released on July 28, 2017. The reason we’re hearing is two-fold: to score a summer blockbuster date for the Columbia Pictures/MRC pic, and to give it more time to finish work on visual effects.

Roland Deschain, a rough-riding knight who has lost his way, peers off into the horizon in search of the man who decimated his world -- and is about to ruin many more. That's the opening of both The Dark Tower film and Stephen King's first book in the series, and here we see Idris Elba as this spiritual warrior, a gunslinging knight, who has the devil in his sights. The landscapes of South Africa stood in for Mid-World, a dimension ravaged by loss but still bewitching in its tragic beauty.
The Dark Tower is partly set in our own time and place -- present day New York. In this shot, a boy named Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) studies sketches he has made of visions and nightmares that are flooding his head. There's a foreboding tower, a man of shadows, figures with shifting faces, a shimmering red rose, trapped children, and doorways that stand all by themselves, with nothing in front or behind but whole other worlds in between. The "shine" that allows him to see these things also allows those who'd like to use his ability as a weapon to sense him.

Elba on the redemption story of Roland, who has “forgotten the face of his father” (or lost his way) in his relentless pursuit of the Man in Black. The actor also comments for the first time about race-swapping the Gunslinger, who until now has always been depicted as white.
McConaughey on the loneliness of evil, the reasons his villain “reveres” the hero chasing him, and why The Man in Black has taken a real shine to present-day New York City.

For those new to the tale, it’s largely set in a dimension called Mid-World, where the apocalypse has already come and gone — and now rolls toward our own like a breaking wave. For Constant Readers who are already steeped in King’s lore, director and co-writer Nikolaj Arcel’s movie (which debuts in theaters Feb. 17) will remix the novels much the way superhero movies often draw from decades of comics mythology to create a new cinematic origin story.
The same stones, but a different structure.

Sometimes two different paths can lead you to the same place.
As readers know, they are actually one in the same – separated, in our world, only by film rights. With The Stand backburnered for now, McConaughey chose the path that takes this mythic Walkin’ Dude through the realm of Mid-World, a parallel universe where he has already helped engineer Armageddon.
The Man in Black plans to bury his pursuer in the wreckage of even more worlds by destroying the Tower that stands as the hub at the center of many dimensions. (He won’t be referred to as Flagg in the movie, but the super-flu-poisoned Earth of The Stand, in the mythology of King’s books, is just one such realm.)
The Dark Tower marks one of the Oscar-winner’s few outright villains, but… of course McConaughey doesn’t see him that way. Bad guys never do.
“Well, he is a man, actually,” McConaughey says during a break between scenes, sitting on a ruined couch on the rooftop of an abandoned shopping center in Cape Town, South Africa. “They wanted to go very human and grounded with this. Obviously there are mythical proportions of good and evil in Walter. But we didn’t want to go overly fantastic. That would drop the humanity. So Walter, for me, is a man who exposes hypocrisies.”

28th April 2016 - Michael Barbieri in Talks to Join Cast
EXCLUSIVE: Two weeks into the start of shooting in South Africa, The Dark Tower is beefing up its cast with the addition of Michael Barbieri, I’ve learned. Reps for the 14-year-old are deep in talks to have him join the highly anticipated Nikolaj Arcel-directed adaptation of Stephen King’s bestselling series, set to come out on Presidents Day weekend next year.
Having starred as the co-lead in Ira Sachs’ Sundance-premiering Little Men, Barbieri is slated to play the role of Timmy in the Idris Elba– and Matthew McConaughey-led Dark Tower. Showing up in The Waste Lands book from 1992, the character is an offbeat pal to the Jake Chambers character, to be played by Tom Taylor. As fans of King’s series know, Jake is the protégé of gunslinger Roland Deschain, to be played by Golden Globe winner Elba. Oscar winner McConaughey portrays baddie the Man in Black in the film, which is based on the first book in King’s series.
With Sony handling distribution for what is expected to be the first in a series of Dark Tower movies, a complementary TV series is also being developed on a parallel track by Media Rights Capital. Weed Road’s Akiva Goldsman and Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Erica Huggins are producing the Dark Tower movie. Stephen King is also a producer on the pic.

27th April 2016 - Katheryn Winnick Joins Cast
Katheryn Winnick, star of History Channel’s “Vikings,” has found her next high-profile gig. Sources tell Variety the actress will join the cast of Sony and MRC’s adaptation of “The Dark Tower.”
Idris Elba stars in the adaptation of Stephen King’s book series alongside Matthew McConaughey and Tom Taylor.
Sony and MRC declined to comment.
Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, “The Dark Tower” arrives in theaters Feb. 17, 2017. Production is currently underway on the dark fantasy tale.

21st April 2016 - Fran Kranz Joins Cast
Fran Kranz will join Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey in Sony's The Dark Tower.
Based on the Stephen King-penned fantasy series, the film will follow a wandering knight (Elba) who is the last hope of the fallen land of Mid-World. He is charged with finding the Dark Tower while battling his nemesis the Man in Black (McConaughey).
Kranz will play Pimli, the right-hand man of the Man in Black.
Sony declined to comment on the casting.

18th February 2016 - Abbey Lee Cast as Tirana, the Female Lead
UPDATE: Readers are questioning the name of the character that Lee plays. That’s what I heard they were calling this major character, and for die hard fans, I can tell you a few character qualities: she’s sexy and dangerous, she has fake human skin and cold snake-like eyes. She doesn’t come in until the seventh volume, apparently, but she’s going to be starring in the first film.
EXCLUSIVE: More casting on Sony and Media Rights Capital’s eagerly awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, which Nikolaj Arcel will direct. Abbey Lee, who is coming off Mad Max: Fury Road and who stars in Gods of Egypt, is negotiating to star in the female lead role of Tirana. She will star opposite Idris Elba, who’ll play good guy gunslinger Roland Deschain, and Matthew McConaughey, who’ll play the villainous Man in Black.
Sony will distribute what is planned to be the first in a series of Dark Tower movies. A complementary TV series is also being developed by MRC. Producing are Weed Road’s Akiva Goldsman and Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Erica Huggins. King is also a producer. That quartet has been involved in this franchise since the beginning, and MRC kept it going after Universal and then Warner Bros developed it and then dropped out. Pinkner is an exec producer.
THE DARK TOWER movie is filming; IT begins soon. Pretty cool.

10th July 2015 - Nikolaj Arcel To Direct
Deadline broke the story last month that the studio was courting Arcel, the Danish helmer of the Oscar-nominated film A Royal Affair, and also the co-writer of the Swedish version of the Stieg Larsson novel The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Arcel, who just turned in a script for a Robert F. Kennedy film that Matt Damon will star in for Warner Bros, will go right to work, and he has enlisted fellow Danish filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen to work together on a rewrite of the script, the last draft of which was written by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. Jensen is a prolific writer-director, who won the Oscar for his short film Election Night. As I wrote last month, the project is a high priority at Sony and gives new studio head Tom Rothman a strong franchise play.

10th April 2015 - Sony Pictures And MRC Team Up to Fast Track Project

Sony Pictures has teamed with MRC to co-finance The Dark Tower, Stephen King’s novel series set in a world woven with magic and revolving around the gunslinger Roland Deschain. Sony will distribute what is planned to be the first in a series of movies. A complementary TV series is also being developed by MRC.
