Not an epic fantasy series but a fantasy/supernatural series I want to see adapted is the Rivers of London/Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch. I know its had interest by the BBC and was in early development at one point but nothing has come of it for a couple of years now. It would work really well as TV show I think.
I'd definitely want The Dark Tower (1st of all) and The Kingkiller Chronicles (2nd) done by HBO, AMC or Netflix with a hell high of a budget. But also, I voted for other. I would die to see the World of Warcraft books done properly by a premium cable network or Netflix. So much perfect stories to tell!!!
Well, I'd like to see as a TV show every book written by Licia Troisi: -Chronicles of the Emerged World (first trilogy) -Wars of the Emerged World (second trilogy) -Legengs of the Emerged World (third trilogy) -The Dragon Girl -Nashira's Kingdoms -Pandora

I think any, if done well, would work. Personnaly I'd like to see Wheel of Time (altohugh considering how long that series is I doubt anyone would want to tackle it!) and The King Killer Chronicles.
Legend of The Seeker was already The Sword Of Truth Series. Please don't do The Dark Tower, going through the whole book series and getting majorly disappointed like that is enough for me. I would love to see Nightshade Series by Andrea Cremer or the Nevermore Series by Kelly Creagh as series.
Enough with all the novel adaptions. Wich show out there ISN'T based on a book or comic book these days? I there really is a lack of original ideas then just go with video games for a change or return to turning movies into TV shows. By all means....do foreign adaptions for all I care but the "based on [insert book series] by [insert random author]" is already a sign for me to turn my TV off. Why? Books adaptations allow little room for creative outbursts. Fans are too picky for doing changes from the source material. That's why doing shows based on movies, games or foreign shows leave better creative opportunities. Fans encourage change there. And with games it's easy to insert a whole new storyline into a beloved universe. Something a book adaption could never allow.
So OTHER it is for me.
Why not do a Elder Scrolls TV show? The world is vast, millions of unique stories can be told and the fandom won't be mad if you change a minor detail because the story you tell is unique and new.
None of these really. My fantasy series is in talks of TV and a movie. The Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. My problem with these adaptations is my love of the characters. I have my own vision of them and ultimately, that vision is changed when they go live. Like Acheron from this series. There isn't an actor alive, that I know of, that could do him justice. Doesn't mean there aren't great actors who could, it just means I do not want my vision tainted! This series has some of my absolute favorite book characters ever. She also took what we knew about Greek Mythology, turned it on its head and gave us an original backstory that lasts thousands of years.
The KingKiller Chronicles - that is, after Patrick Rothfuss has finished the trilogy - HBO or Starz.
Dresden Files - I know it was attempted before but this time by a channel like HBO. The epic scale and monumental stakes of the Dresden Files Universe deserve to be portrayed on the screen.
I know this isn't exactly a fantasy series but I would love for Frank Herbert's Dune to be turned into a TV series. It could either be just the first book or the first three books. Things get a little derailed after that.
I agree. Harry Potter should be a TV show. Not to disrespect the films but a TV format would provide more room for material from the books that the films wouldn't be able to entirely cover.

The Malazan Book of the Fallen - Imo, hands down the greatest epic fantasy of all time. I don't think they could ever do it justice on any screen though.

Not to mention Hannibal, Friday Night Lights, Dexter, Broadwalk Empire, Masters of Sex, Sherlock, Justified, Orange Is the New Black, House of Cards, Outlander etc. etc. Few things inspire creative minds like a good novel, so I have no qualms about TV series which draws inspiration from or are based off of novels.
I agree that video games are a huge untapped potential for TV show inspirations(Last of Us TV show please). And, I really don't see why you can't make changes to stuff from novels really. There are a lot of TV shows which are critically and commercially successful(I mentioned them in my other comment) which are based off of novels but have their own spin on it or have told entirely new stories with the books' world like you want shows to do in video game worlds.
To be fair, the second season of the show got progressively worse and ended up a mess IMO. But, yeah, it was still good though and should have been renewed.
Pern has been in development for over 15 years at various places. Ron Moore (Outlander, Battlestar Galactica) was going to make it into a tv show for the WB around 2000 but pulled the plug because the network wanted it to be like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Then it went to went to indie film producers in Canada for a number of years. And currently a Fox exec moved to WB last year, and one of his first order of business was getting the rights and commissioning a new movie script. But with WB's commitment to the Harry Potter adjacent franchise Fantastic Beasts and the DC franchise, I'm curious to where a Pern film franchise would fit.
I've been a huge fan of the series my whole life but I really want it done right.
I would actually rather see a spin-off that concentrates on other characters, either in prequel or post. The actors from the movie are too indelibly imprinted as teh characters now for it to follow them.
You can but the stuck up fanbase will react rather butthurt. Just look at Game o Thrones, the fanbase went bananas when they decided to scrap Lady Stoneheart. Ever change to the books is met with much distain. Same goes for TVD, fans went nuts over the authors vision being a popular ship but the show (in earlier seasons) not appeasing them.
Using the books as a jumping off point is fine by me but clinging to canon is limiting creativity IMO.

I like GoT but it's majorly overhyped, a fun show with great production values but overall slow pace and horrible acting from some sides (GoT has a few fantastic actors but a few are just...well...)
Well....I wouldn't call Hannibal better than the books, I wouldn't even call the series better than Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon and Manhunter. Certainly a brilliant show but in the middle of the franchises quality wheel (wich is still good since the franchise is overall amazingly well done).
Didn't even know Boardwalk Empire, Friday Night Lights, Justified and OITNB were based on books.
Speaking of Outlander: I heard some people call it a fantasy version of 50 Shades of Grey, wich scared me. I wanted to watch the show but after hearing that I'm a bit...on the edge
Certainly one of the best shows out there but it is also limited due to the books. They could never kill off Will for example. Something I would have done in season 3 only to introduce a female investigator BASED on Clarice Starling (based, she does everything Clarice does but isn't named the same...so MGM can suck a big one).

And? How does quality of a show get reduced because a few fans complain about certain aspects isn't to their liking on the internet? This is hardly limited to shows based on books nor is it any more apparent with them. I didn't even know tVD fans were at one point complaining about the show based off of books :D Yeah, I mean that's really upto the showrunners. Just like in the case of any adaptation(be it foreign shows, movies or video games). If they want to do a faithful adaptation or use it as a jumping off point. But being upfront about this with the fans I've found usually alleviate a lot of complaining in the future.
Have you seen what fans can do to the shows they follow if loud enough via social media? Entire shows have changed their set up just to appease the fanbases. Well, TVD now is certainly more like the books than it ever was with season 1. I read the first novel and it felt like nothing more but a cheap romantic crapfest full of clichés. But the first two seasons were in fact pretty removed from that angle.
Well, fans have a right to voice their opinion. But it's really upto the showrunners to filter that feedback and use it to improve the shows rather than to pander to the whims of a loud few on the internet.
I wouldn't fault the fans or the source material for that really.
There was a Polish movie and a series and it was bad. For movie they cut some scenes from the series, glued together and that was it, they didn't have a proper script for it, I remember some scenes made no sense at all and had no continuation as they forgot to add another scene that explained the previous and so on. It was a mess. In addition they made public quarrels regarding missing and misplaced money.
Definitely had to vote The Malazan Book of the Fallen. There are tons of great series out there, but Malazan has always struck me as so much more culturally diverse than the usual European-analogue fantasy settings that make up so much of the genre. There's a real interest in anthropology and archaeology that goes into the world-building and fleshing out the different cultures and races, and while there are still monsters and magic (and elves and orcs under different labels), it's still very real. Also, the magical definitions (drawing power from different 'Warrens') is a really cool idea, and it would be funto see how that would translate on screen.
Yah, I'm referring to the announcement that supposedly a writer was hired late last year to write at least the first film in a proposed series of films. I was a fan of the series during high school but haven't really had the time to invest in the series of books in my adult life, which I should do. But, I loved it so much that without having the books, I know what happened. Those things are special when I can remember with a snap of the fingers.
I know that's why I picked it I want a season 3 of Legend of the seeker I loved that show but sadly it never really had a home network or the promos it needed to be a success it aired in my area on Saturdays at 5pm on a local wgn channel so unless you made the effort to find and watch it or even know about it then you weren't watching sadly :-(
I agree. Warrens alone, they would need a CGI budget of 1 Billion or more to pull it off, let alone the absurd amount of world building. Truly the epic of our time, like LotR was to the previous generation(s).
Farseer triology takes place before and the Tawny Man triology. Amber is the connecting Person. If you have not red them you will be surprised to learn more about her. The Liveship triology is the most innovative of the three through.
The TV series could be an earlier or later iteration of Roland's journey though and thus justify the changes that naturally come with an adaptation while also making the "disappointing" parts of the books better.
Yes, the first season was better than the second, but still LotS was the best fantasy series for me for all time. It had an interesting mythology and felt really different. And the scenery was soo beautiful!
For me i loved the second season more, it had Cara and she was a great addition to the cast and the romance with Richard and Kahlan was put more into the forefront.

Same, I started reading the books when I was just getting into Justified so the 2 are firmly connected in my mind.

ReplyDeleteYes, the first season was better than the second, but still LotS was the best fantasy series for me for all time. It had an interesting mythology and felt really different. And the scenery was soo beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI know that crappy show, but video games have proven that it can be done something really good based on this material.
ReplyDeleteFor me i loved the second season more, it had Cara and she was a great addition to the cast and the romance with Richard and Kahlan was put more into the forefront.
