LIFETIME RENEWS CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED

DRAMA UNREAL FOR SECOND SEASON

A+E Studios-Produced Series and Network’s Youngest

Drama Ever to Return Next Year

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 6, 2015) – Lifetime has renewed its critically acclaimed scripted series UnREAL (#UnREALTV) for a second season with a 10-episode order, it was announced today by Liz Gateley, Executive Vice President and Head of Programming for Lifetime. Produced by A+E Studios, UnREAL will return next year.

To date, the first three episodes of the provocative drama, which stars Shiri Appleby and Constance Zimmer, and gives a fictitious behind-the-scenes glimpse into the chaos surrounding the production of a dating competition program, are averaging more than 4.8 million views across all available platforms.

Airing on Mondays at 10:00pm ET/PT, UnREAL is Lifetime’s youngest scripted series ever, with a median age of 43.

Regarding the announcement, Gateley said, “We couldn’t be more proud to bring back UnREAL. With authentically flawed characters, sharp storytelling and impeccable performances, this show is propelling our brand in a truly exciting direction – an unexpected and bolder Lifetime. We are thrilled to continue our work with Marti and Sarah and the incredible A+E Studios team, as we together bring a new generation of viewers to Lifetime.”

Co-created by Marti Noxon and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro, and recently honored as one of 2015’s Most Exciting New Series at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, UnREAL was inspired by Shapiro’s 2013 SXSW award-winning independent short film, Sequin Raze.

Set against the backdrop of the hit dating competition show Everlasting, UnREAL is led by flawed heroine Rachel Goldberg (Appleby), a young producer whose sole job is to manipulate her relationships with, and among, the contestants to get the vital dramatic and outrageous footage that the program’s dispassionate executive producer, Quinn King (Zimmer), demands. What ensues is an eye-opening look at what happens in the outrageous world of unscripted television, where being a contestant can be vicious and being a producer is a whole other reality.

UnREAL also stars Craig Bierko as Everlasting’s eccentric creator, Chet? and Freddie Stroma as the dating show’s handsome and intelligent suitor, Adam Cromwell. Josh Kelly plays Jeremy, a cameraman who is Rachel’s ex-boyfriend, while Jeffrey Bowyer Chapman is Jay, a field producer whose ambitions run far beyond the show, at times putting him at odds with Rachel. Everlasting’s contestants include Grace, portrayed by Nathalie Kelley, who immediately wins Adam’s heart; Anna, played by Johanna Braddy, who is classy and shrewd, with her eye on the prize; Faith, a sensitive and vulnerable tomboy from the South portrayed by Breeda Wool; and Mary, played by Ashley Scott, a gorgeous single mom who has been unlucky in love. Arielle Kebbel guest stars as Britney, a contestant who has no filter and isn’t on Everlasting to make any friends.

Noxon executive produces while Shapiro serves as supervising producer. Sally DeSipio and Robert M. Sertner executive produce and Stacy Rukeyser co-executive produces. UnREAL is the first scripted series fully produced and distributed by A+E Studios. A+E Networks also handles global sales for UnREAL, which has been sold and will air in more than 100 territories.

  1. Devious Maids is certain to be renewed, but I feel sad because Witches of the East End was cancelled with the similiar ratings.

  2. What? And Devious Maids?

    ReplyDelete
  3. I doubt Lifetime would cancel DM and renew Unreal which is doing worse.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Wow congrats! Good for Fil Eisler!

    ReplyDelete
  5. You're right, but Liferime is really strange in its decisions...

    ReplyDelete
  6. Wasnt he a composer for Revenge?

  7. SmellyMellie :~6 July 2015 at 21:49

Yeah, all we need a devious maids renewal.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Critically acclaimed is code for the ratings were terrible, but since we are cable we don't have to admit failure yet. However, since it hit a 0.2 this year, next year's ratings will be low. And as pointed out Lifetime cancelled shows with higher ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I still need to catch up on the last episode but good news :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. That's really great news! I'm loving this show and I was loosing all hope! This made my day!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Jap! He was the only composer

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yay Cutter...I mean, Josh Kelly!

    ReplyDelete
  13. It rose to all 0.4 last Week

    ReplyDelete
  14. Which is still low.

  16. In that case, Devious Maids is a safe bet if they renewed UnREAL :D

    ReplyDelete
  17. Lifetime, now we want a Season 4 for Devious Maids, please.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Wtf they canceled witches with similar ratings ugh

    ReplyDelete
  19. So cable should operate just like the networks and cancel all shows below a ratings threshold, and than repeat the cycle the following year if the new shows dont achieve the rating threshold? Rinse repeat until they find that elusive new hit drama.

  20. SmellyMellie :~6 July 2015 at 22:34

I'd love to see them focus on a " bachelorette" it would be interesting with all male contestants.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Less ratings actually:
    -Unreal season average so far: 0.27 with 0.69 milion of viewers;
-Witches season average ( season 2 ): 0.47 with 1.13 milion of viewers.
    Totally nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Except UnREAL has the excellent reviews from TV specialists so it must help them.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Second season show, not owned by Lifetime, with ratings trending in the wrong direction.

    YESSSSSSS!!!

  25. Still so upset they cancelled WOEE and that it was left on a cliffhanger. I'm still hoping for someone to pick it up :/

    ReplyDelete
  26. Let's be real for a min here-Who would want to pick up WOEE?

    ReplyDelete
  27. You dont put any of the blame on the writers for ending the season on a cliffhanger when they did not know they had a third season?

    ReplyDelete
  28. It was only renewed cause it's "critically acclaimed"

    ReplyDelete
  29. Exactly. All blame lies on the showrunners here IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Still higher ratings, a 0.27 with 0.69 milion of viewers is completely awful, especially for a freshman show.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Critics darling, something WOEE was not.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Good for them. I hope Devious Maids will be renewed too.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Haha I don't know I'm still annoyed they cancelled it since it had decent ratings for lifetime.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Brandy Danforth6 July 2015 at 22:49

Is Devious Maids owned by Lfetime?I don't think so,it's abc right?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ratings are the main reason for renewals and cancellations.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I loved Season 1.I lost interest when Freya's true love Kiss brought Killian back to life magically.I stopped caring by the time they killed Frederick off predictably.I,for one,am not sad to see it gone.I was gonna drop it anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  37. In a simple answer, yes. To be more elaborate, renewing shows because you can dilutes the brand and doesn't encourage unique audiences to sample the network.

    ReplyDelete
  38. No.Prime example-TGW & Hannibal(Till now).

    ReplyDelete
  39. TGW has a strong syndication deal too, main reason for its renewal...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Can you tell me the mystery behind BaTB renewal?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I was replying to the person above comparing Witches of East End to Unreal. Yes Devious Maids is owned by ABC/Disney though someone pointed out to me a few weeks ago that Disney owns part of A&E/Lifetime.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Brandy Danforth6 July 2015 at 22:53

Trie but it flopped in syndication so why keep renewing it after it had enough episodes for syndication & flopped in syndication?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Season 1 was amazing. Ya I agree season 2 was quite a mess but I wanted 1 more season at least to wrap everything up.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Unfortunately, I have no idea about this! =P

    ReplyDelete
  45. Is devious maids worth watching? What's it about

    ReplyDelete
  46. How do you know it flopped? I know CBS make a 2 milion of dollars per episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's a dramedy-mystery show, real funny and interesting, with a great cast :) It's very similar to Desperate Housewives, since Marc Cherry is the creator :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. YES!!!! Did not expect this at all! Now I can relax and enjoy the rest of the season!

    ReplyDelete
  49. TV critics doesn't attract as rates or sunscription fees. It's only relevant to PR.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Brandy Danforth6 July 2015 at 22:57

It strong digitally& internationally,it's international sales are covering its cheap production costs & CW wants to get it 70 ish episodes for syndication( it being a prrocederal hybrid & IRS brand name recognition should help there just like Nikita.)I think Deadlune also said its Mark Pedowitzs pet project,

    ReplyDelete
  51. Brandy Danforth6 July 2015 at 23:00

Yes.Theyre like that already anyway for the most part( at least Lufetime & ABCFamily a).Good ratings mean ad revenue-a networks biggest source of income and the lower the ratings, the less ad revenue and then the show becomes too expensive/isn't making enough money to justify renewal.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Sounds like a network TV reply and looking at things solely based on numbers. On cable, sticking with quality shows actually builds the brand.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ok I might give it w try! Thanks :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Brandy Danforth6 July 2015 at 23:04

Yes & no.Theyre still a huge factor but now in 2015 especially with with Czw & cable networks, ratings aren't the main reason-critical acclaim,,syndication ,studio ownership, costof show, dvr numbers, online viewing( Carrie Diaries,Aquarius) are increasingly important factors in renewal/cancel especially as live rayings decrease every year

    ReplyDelete
  55. Brandy Danforth6 July 2015 at 23:10

It sold to Hallmark and they pulled it/stopped airing it in three days/weeks so it flopped

    ReplyDelete
  56. Matthew Zamora6 July 2015 at 23:11

    DM better be renewed!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. This is a myth as quality does nothing to help a network and does not contribute ad rates or subscription fees above what new programming is likely to do. It's PR Jedi and bingo card material.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Brandy Danforth6 July 2015 at 23:31

Quality is subjective though & has nothing to do with renewals/cancellation and "quality" Dosent much-UnReals critically acclaim, called a z"quality" show by critics yet barely anyone's watching and the network isn't making much money on ad revenue from such low ratings and in some cases, networks have to pay back advertisers if a show Dosent deliver in the ratings.A show has to make money to stay on not be "quality" cause shows aren't free to make.Look at some if the reality shows that make money but very few people think they're"quality" shows-Bachelor Kardashians,Duggars ect.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Whew. I was a little worried.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Brandy Danforth6 July 2015 at 23:50

Great reviews from critics means little-Jane the Virgin had great reviews too but low ratings, just like UnReal so did LineStar several years ago, which despite being being lived critics ,the general public didn't watch & it was cancelled dafter three episodes.Sure great reviews are nice to brag about, but nothing more. They don't help pay the shows bills or bring in viewers most of the time

    ReplyDelete
  61. Brandy Danforth6 July 2015 at 23:55

Why?With those ratings, they're just gonna cancel it after season two like Client List,Witches of East End ect.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Maruschka van Veen7 July 2015 at 00:11

    Yes i love this show.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'm glad, this show is very entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I didn't expect Lifetime to make this announcement until closer to the finale. I'm so glad they made the leap and renewed this amazingly original and intriguing show.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Ditto for The Lottery.

    ReplyDelete
  66. SmellyMellie :~7 July 2015 at 01:19

i seriously didn't see a trend up until i read your comment!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I like this show and how fun and trashy it is. It almost pokes fun at the Dating/Reality TV genre. Constance Zimmer is fantastic as the Executive Producer of this fictional show they are making. Not sure how the show continues for another 10 hours, but I'm excited to find out.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Probably picked up because the show is an In house production by A&E studios and not a special FX driven show produced by FOX like Witches was.

    ReplyDelete
  69. That's great news! This is definitely one of Lifetime's better shows!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think they're excited because of the younger viewership, which of course is a more lucrative audience to have in terms of advertising.

    ReplyDelete
  71. This gives me hope for Season 4 of Devious Maids!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Brandy Danforth7 July 2015 at 15:53

Mist if Thier shows get cancelled after one or two seasons-only Drop Desd Diva,Army Wives,Devious Maids so far have bucked this trend as far as I know-speaking for scripted shows though other than Dsnce Moms, their reality shows don't seem to do well either,
