The more I watch each episode the more I enjoy this season. It is definitely not season 1 that's for sure but it doesn't need to be like season 1. I firmly believe that season 1 was so beloved was because most people were not expecting it to be that great. Now expectations were set so high for season 2 it would have been impossible to reach them.
I agree Season 2 doesn't need to be like Season 1 and it wasn't intended to be. The goal is for each season to be different from the other in terms of characters, central mystery, and location. But both seasons are united by these peaks into the darkness of human nature and how the detectives deal with that darkness from without and within. I think that is the heart of True Detective.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
