21:30 - Roots Remake - Laurence Fishburne to Star
Laurence Fishburne will star as Alex Haley in A+E Networks scripted event seriesRoots, a remake of one of the most celebrated TV programs of all time.
Fishburne, an Emmy and Tony winner currently co-starring on ABC’s Black-ish, will play Haley, author of the novel Roots: The Saga Of An American Family, an American family origin story based around the life of Kunta Kinte. The new version is described as an original, contemporary production, incorporating more material from Haley’s novel, as well as carefully researched new scholarship of the time. The event series will be simulcast on A&E, History and Lifetime in 2016.
Roots is described as a historical portrait of American slavery recounting the journey of one family’s will to survive, endure and ultimately carry on their legacy despite enormous hardship and inhumanity. Spanning multiple generations, the lineage begins with young Kunta Kinte who is captured in his homeland in The Gambia and transported in brutal conditions to colonial America where he’s sold into slavery. Throughout the series, the family continues to face adversity while bearing witness and contributing to notable events in U.S. history – including the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, slave uprisings and eventual emancipation.

05:10 - The Player - FilmLA Sued By Hollywood Nightclub
The non-profit permitting group got a notice of its own today and it may see them set up shop in court. A Hollywood nightclub filed a complaint for unspecified damages Tuesday against FilmLA for some last minute production shooting that basically closed them down for two days in April. Time that left the owners of The Cosmos nightclub out some mid-week dough. And that’s money they want to see some of now.
“Upon the aforementioned notification at 10:00 p.m., on March 30, 2015, Plaintiff TOP GUN voiced their opposition to the filming, in that FILMLA, or its principal TOP GUN, never provided any advance notice of the filming to Plaintiff, and that said filming would severely impair and jeopardize THE COSMO’ s expected volume and revenue, of which was substantial on Wednesday nights,” says the 6-page lawsuit for Private Nuisance and Negligence (read it here). “As a result of the unconsented filming, Plaintiff TOP GUN was forced to shut down THE COSMO on April 1-2, 2015.”
The filming this spring on Hollywood Blvd was for the pilot for Endgame. As of late April, the show is now going by the title of The Player. Picked up by NBC in early May, the thriller is set debut on the network next season. NBC are not named as a defendant in the suit though Topanga Productions are. “As of this time we have not been served in this lawsuit,” a FilmLA spokesperson told me this evening. Various LA Country residents and business have had issues with FilmLA over the years with concerns about permits allowing production trucks to taking streets and long delays getting back into one’s own neighborhoods, among other incidents. However, rarely have those frustrations escalated to the courts as this incident obviously has.

05:05 - The Trial - Kevin Costner Passes on David E. Kelley Amazon Drama
Kevin Costner won't be making his series regular debut anytime soon.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the two-time Oscar winner has opted to pass on starring in Amazon's David E. Kelley legal drama The Trial and that the project is going back to square one to find a "huge star" for its leading man. Sources indicate that the drama will still go straight to series, a point that Costner signing on would have guaranteed.
The Trial centers on Billy McBride, a once respectable lawyer who was ousted from the high-profile firm he co-founded. Billy now spends his days getting drunk, with the occasional case tossed his way by his ex-wife. However, Billy is reinvigorated professionally when a young lawyer who has just been fired from his old firm brings him a wrongful death case that pits him against the head of his former firm.

04:55 - Fox Concludes Upfront Negotiations Down
The fourth-place network is down in the single digits compared to double-digit drops over the previous two seasons.
Fox has concluded its upfront negotiations down as much as 5 percent in dollar volume, say sources familiar with the company's sales efforts.
Last year, the network pulled in $1.6 billion, a decline of 10 percent year-over-year due to foundering ratings for onetime juggernaut American Idol and a paucity of new hits. It was the second consecutive year, Fox saw such a drop in the upfront market. And this season, even with midseason mega hit Empire, Fox saw its ratings among the advertiser coveted 18-49 demographic plummet 24 percent.
The recent restructuring of the company's sales efforts has cushioned the blow since the entertainment and sports networks of of 21st Century Fox are being bundled for greater cross-platform efficiencies. And that has allowed the network group – which includes Fox Sports, FX, FXX, National Geographic Channel and others – to record flat revenue across the portfolio.
Additionally, like CBS, which closed negotiations on Monday, Fox also saw more deals done on C7 (commercial ratings with seven days of delayed viewing). The network recently restructured its sales division to enable cross-portfolio and multi-platform efficiencies, a response to advertiser demand for 360 deals.
The programs that generated the most interest among buyers Empire, the John Stamos vehicle Grandfathered and Ryan Murphy's Scream Queens on Fox, American Horror Story and The Americanson FX and, as usual, Fox Sports broadcasts of the World Series, NFL and Major League Baseball playoffs.
