In just six days from now, the nominees for the 2015 Emmy Awards will be announced. A few weeks ago, I opened up a form where everyone could submit their predictions and dream nominees. I am happy to say there have been various responses and I want to thank everybody for submitting! I have gathered all responses and now it's time to publish the results. The nominees with the most votes are included in the article. I've decided to split the results into two articles: one for the predictions and one for the dream nominees. Today it's time to publish the predictions and in a few days the dream nominees will be posted (see link below).

Before we head over to the nominations, here are some statistics and notes:
-A total of 43 people submitted their predictions and/or dream nominees. Submissions ranged from completely filled in responses to just one name in just one category.
-The new Emmy rules are certainly confusing. A frequently made mistake was putting Orange Is The New Black as a comedy, while it really is considered a drama this year. Per the rules I set in the form, if a program or performer was submitted in the wrong category, it will not count.
-The guest acting rule also caused some confusion. To be considered a guest performer, an actor or actress cannot appear in more than 50% of a show's episodes. Joe Morton from Scandal, who won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series last year, is not eligible in that category this year because he appeared in too many episodes. Likewise, Hugh Laurie, who guest starred on Veep this season, appeared in too many episodes to be considered a guest actor, and thus is eligible in the category Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
-In some cases, a performer was eligible multiple times in the same category. For example, Bradley Whitford is eligible as Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for both Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Transparent, while Mary Steenburgen submitted herself as a Guest Actress in a Comedy for both Togetherness and The Last Man On Earth. Even more, Seth Rogen is eligible as Guest Actor in a Comedy for three series: Broad City, The Comeback and The League. Unfortunately, if the program wasn't mentioned in a submission, I couldn't count it since I wouldn't know for which series you submitted the performer.
-The most predictions were submitted in the category Outstanding Drama Series, which had 170 votes in total. Unsurprisingly, the guest acting categories had the least number of submissions.
-The most predicted nominee was a tie between Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory and Jim Parsons. For each of them, 22 people predicted their nomination.
-The predictions below are sorted by the number of votes. For example, in the category Lead Actor in a Comedy, Jim Parsons had the highest number of votes, followed by Louis C.K., then Jeffrey Tambor, after that William H. Macy etc. If two contenders had the same number of votes, they are sorted by alphabetical order (see Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory).
-In some cases, two (or more) contenders had the same number of votes while there was only one place left in the category. For example, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Parks & Recreation both had 8 votes for Comedy Series, but including them both would exceed the maximum number of nominees. In these cases, I used random number generator to decide which would be included in the category. The other nominee(s) are considered a 'Top Contender'.
Now let's get on to the predictions.

The top programs on the comedy side are Modern Family, which is expected to get 7 nominations, The Big Bang Theory (5 nominations), Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (5 nominations), Veep (4 nominations) and Transparent (4 nominations).

ReplyDeleteI watch Empire but sorry tbh i Do Not think IT deserves auf spot in the emmys for Best drama. I Thought it was great but it is not top-notch quality. I think HTGAWM is better than empire.
I really am rooting for Game of thrones this Year. I hope they win best drama (which mad men will probably win), lena headey and peter dinklige in the supporting roles and hopefully they get nominations for best writing for both "Hardhome" which was NOT based on the book yet was exceptional and "Mother's Mercy" which IMO was their best finale yet, with Season 4's finale "the children" being very close.

Thanks for doing this, Daniel. It's really a lot of fun; I am curious to the dream ones as well. Most of my predictions are fairly aligned with the overall predictions, which I think is cool.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I personally feel the Best Lead Actress in a Drama is one of the most competitive categories ever this year. It's just insane. In a "normal year", Kerry Washington would be a lock and Elizabeth Moss, Lizzy Caplan, Taylor Schilling, Michelle Dockery and Keri Russel would all be strong contenders. It's crazy, you can almost make a second 6 people group entirely.
I agree with most of this. I actually do not think Peter Dinklage deserves it for this year though. He was amazing as always but I feel he didn't get that many strong material, not like last year's trial scene for instance. He was good but I feel there were other people more deserving in the supporting category. My dream choice would be Rupert Friend there for this year. However, I really think Game of Thrones should take best drama and Lena Heady really should take best supporting actress.
ReplyDeleteI also agree on Empire, I've said it before. It's entertaining, but I don't think it is nowhere near the caliber of a best drama nomination. I do think both leads deserve nominations though.
I wouldn't mind Dominic West winning but I think Kevin Spacey or John Hamm will have the race on lock, it's between those two I think
ReplyDeleteAlso, I really doubt The Good Wife scores a nomination. Last year was probably their most critically acclaimed season yet and they were shut down from the drama race despite the recognition for the cast; I doubt something different happens this year when this season was more polarizing than ever (I personally enjoyed it much regardless. It was weaker than Season 5 but way better than Season 3 and 4). I think it will be replaced on that list by Better Call Saul or The Affair (or both, taking down Orange is the New Black).

I actually hated the good wife season 6, even more than season 4. I really hope the kings know What they are doing while writing was is probably their last season
ReplyDeleteI mean I'm still totally flashed by The Affair and I have no clue what really happened with that dual POV, but Dominic really impressed me. In both povs he did an extraordinary job.
ReplyDeleteI intend now for a while to watch House of Cards cause I heard it is brilliant, but Man Men never felt good to me. Never really impressed me.
We'll have to wait and see.
I really enjoyed it, especially the early portion (Carry's storyline) and late portion (from Loser's Edit until the finale). The mid portion dragged on a bit, sure, but I thought the rest was top notch; to each his own though, of course!
ReplyDeleteSadly I don't think they will move. Better Call Saul I believe will get nominations for Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks, and maybe Outstanding Drama Series. The Americans might only get the guest actress nomination for Margo Martindale.
ReplyDeleteOutlander is possible, there are some really tight races this year! I'm afraid HTGAWM is a long-shot. I agree with omabin that John Hamm and Kevin Spacey are more likely to win than Dominic West.
ReplyDeleteI think both leads on The Affair did a phenomenal job, really. They really should be locks for nominations. And I personally would throw one to Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson as well, even though I think that will probably happen next season and not this one. They were both fantastic as well.
ReplyDeleteI like House of Cards. I don't think it is the best show ever as some people do but I like it. The thing is that you have to be on a specific mood to watch it. It requires a lot of attention so you can't be doing other stuff with it on. It wasn't designed to be background TV at all. The first time I tried I wasn't on mood for it so by the 3rd or 4th episode I was totally lost on who was who and how the relationships were between everyone so I dropped it cause I felt it was way too serious for my taste, I had to constantly rewind it. However, there were so many people amazed with the show that they pressured me to try it out again and when I did I watched the entire first season in a little over 24 hours. I just needed the proper mood for the show.

ReplyDeleteI'm sad JJ didn't get much more space to develop. We saw so much reaction and development with Noah's family and really small amounts of Alison's background. I hope he'll get more space to show off next season. Maura was fabulous, I really felt all of her emotions, disappointments and struggle to balance between her lives.
ReplyDeleteMost cable shows have a lot of deep flow and require more attention than usually. I don't use subtittles but with cable shows I prefer it. One of my good friends is watching HoC and said me I should check it out. We'll see when I'll squeeze it in time wise.
Yes, House of Cards 100% requires subtitles I think. I mean, it obviously depends on one's level of English but I feel that I am pretty fluent in English and I need subtitles for that one for sure, so I get what you mean.
ReplyDeleteI think JJ did get a fair amount of stuff to do . I think the point with him (and a bit with Ruth as well) was that they were not reacting, they were not coping. Still, his scenes when he learns of the affair and who it was with were so good. And when he finally allowed himself to grieve the lost of his son. Damn! I am actually missing the show a lot more than I thought. Don't know how I will handle it in the fall. Because last year, after watching the pilot, I decided to save up all the episodes to watch during Christmas break marathoned which I loved and I think the show is genuinely better that way. But this year I like it way too much already, so I don't know if I will be able to wait all that time to watch with the episodes out there every week; we'll see how strong my willpower is ahah.

ReplyDeleteDrama Lead Actress is a pretty competitive category this year, I agree. I was just over at goldderby and there are really a lot of women that stand a chance of being nominated. I think Viola Davis, Taraji P. Henson and Robin Wright are locks. I would be surprised if Julianna Margulies and/or Claire Danes are left out, but it's possible they will be snubbed. Ruth Wilson's nomination might be most in doubt here. Only a few more days till we know for sure!
I know HTGAWM has slim chances but for that I think the race for Lead Actress is between Viola and Claire from Outlander. Those 2 really nailed it for me, at least from the shows I watch.

Truth to be told I never guess right who'll win it and when I cheer for someone he/she/it most likely won't win it.
I agree, I dont think TGW will be nominated for the exact reason you mention. I'm curious if it will win an Emmy this year after winning one every season since it started. Although with all the contenders in the Drama Guest Actor, I doubt one of them won't win. I mean, if Michael J. Fox, David Hyde Pierce and Ed Asner all make it, and if Dylan Baker also stands a chance of being nominated, the chances of a TGW guest actor winning are big.
ReplyDeleteI'm also very fluent in my English, sometimes I'm even surprised how large my vocabulary got over the years. It probably has something to do with me not speaking it so much just listening. It has major differences.
ReplyDeleteWhen the show started they already reached the acceptance stage of their coping so we were cheated on a bit there. The moment of truth between Alison and Cole were so captivating. U could really feel how much they care for each other and how the death of their son drove them from each other. The show certainly left a big impression on me and I also binge watched it during midseason. It really captivated me, not sure how I'll watch it this fall, probably mid season binge as it has not to many episode. But my schedule is packed so I don't know.
I would love for HTGAWM to get a nomination, but hopefully at least Viola will win for Lead Actress. If Cicely Tyson also happens to win, that would be awesome!
ReplyDeleteThis is the last year for Jon Hamm to win so it will be interesting to see if the voters know that and award him the trophy. Same with Amy Poehler by the way. I read the two of them once did an Emmy-losers party or something like that, hillarious!
Oh Cicely could snag that guest star Emmy. Forgot about her. It will be a tight race and can't wait for them to release the nominees.
ReplyDeletePoor Jon had 11 nominations didn't even win the ones for guest roles. He turned in Tv's Leo DiCaprio.
But a dream come true would be Grant Gustin getting a nomination, for me at least. I know it is more than unlikely but boy he knocked me out of my shoes a couple of time. It would really be a great recognition for what this young man pulled of this season.
For some reason my vocabulary has become much larger as well. I think It is due to the fact that i watch many shows, in some of which they use very precise language. I very often focus on the dialogue and relativ scenes many times, so hence it helps me!

ReplyDeleteI don't watch Empire so I cannot judge. I would love for HTGAWM to be nominated though, but sadly that is a long-shot.
Game of Thrones will get at least these nominations. With Breaking Bad out of the way, they also have a bigger chance of winning. I think out of these three nominations, Peter Dinklage is most likely to win in his category. The big competitor there is Jonathan Banks, but I think the rest is unlikely to win. Game of Thrones might stand a better chance than previous years, but as you say there is Mad Men which might return one last time to grab the Emmy. I believe Lena Headey is less likely, as we have Maggie Smith, Christina Hendricks and Christine Baranski all gunning for it.
I think they will take something on the guest category, yes, but I doubt they get something on the major ones.

ReplyDeleteGirls may not be everyone's cup of tea, but she's talented, funny, well-liked by critics and the show creates a lot of buzz for HBO. This season (and her performance) was also a lot stronger than the last 2, so if she made the cut then she should now.

ReplyDeleteWorst case scenario is Empire racking up non-Taraji nominations, including supporting cast and even winning some of them, Emmy has already done some populist moves in the past (CSI getting nods from 2001-04, DH in 2004, Everybody Loves Raymond in 2005).

But Most of all i feel like Amy Acker really should get in there some how, the shows mvp this season and one of the best actresses on tv.

ReplyDeleteOops, I must have missed this one, and I'm sad to see nobody from Outlander in the respective categories. Well, let's see if they get at least *officially* nominated because I've seen the ballots and there, Outlander was listed 27 (!!) times in different categories (including writing, directing, music, etc.).
ReplyDeleteModern Family hasn't been funny in a long time. There is no way that it would deserve this many nominations. However, you're probably right that it will get them because the same shows are nominated over and over every year.

ReplyDeleteI would hate Last Man on Earth not getting any recognition for its brilliant first season. I thought Will Forte was simply hilarious, especially in the pilot episode. It is hard to be the only actor performing in an episode and hold the audiences attention. I would replace Matt LeBlanc with Will Forte.
ReplyDeleteAnd I would be disappointed with so many nominations for Modern Family. I would rather see Kristen Schaal or Wendi McLendon-Covey from The Goldbergs over Sophia Vergara and Julie Bowen again.
I also think it would be a major snub for Mom not to be nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. In my opinion, it has been the best comedy on broadcast TV this season over Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory. I love that it is written so well that it is able to tackle serious subject matters in a humorous way.

ReplyDeleteHonestly even though I'm a huge fan of The Good Wife I feel that this season was very weak compared to the previous seasons. I would much rather see Empire win as it had a terrific season.
