I'm sort of a fan for a hybrid form of television. Just like some shows benefit from shorter seasons, I think some shows would benefit from dropping a bunch of episodes online at a time (4-5) and then air those episodes week to week as well. Sometimes the story just benefits from being able to see a group of episodes together to keep the storytelling high but there are also viewers who would rather watch week to week. I think having both options would hype the show not decrease the ratings/viewers/etc.
ReplyDeleteFor example, this season of Arrow could have benefited from dropping:
(1) the trilogy arc with Oliver not being in Starling towards midseason. Those shows fed directly into each other and having to wait lowered the interest level (for me at least). It kind of played like a 3 hour movie so I would have loved the option to view them together.
(2) the late episodes. The whole Oliver/LOA storyline really started to drag right around the time of "Public Enemy". Dropping those 4-5 episodes together would have led me to watch them instead of saving them up and watching them back-to-back anyway.
The pace of a show matters. If the show is a weekly procedural or case-of-the-week then once a week is fine. If the story is really high paced and arc-oriented then I would rather watch the group together but have the option of week-to-week as well. There are only so many hours in the week. I would binge groups of Arrow episodes but watch Elementary week-to-week.
