Rizzoli and Isles Episode606-Face Value
Teleplay By Sam Lembeck
Story by Alicia Kirk
Directed By Steve Clancy

What starts out in sales madness leads us to a murder with an eyewitness who has a rare disorder and links to organised crime. Throw in one annoying cousin and we have an enjoyable and light hearted episode this week.

Two women, we learn mother and daughter, are camping out, no not for SDCC (San Diego Comic Con) but a sale which they very nearly miss due to the mother’s stopped watch. She sends her daughter ahead as she had ‘cased’ the store beforehand (really people do this). The daughter looks back to see her mother staggering and falling, people keep pushing to get in the store, they have no regard for the girl frantically trying to get back to her mother who now is lying on ground.

We are in Maura’s kitchen again Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) is trying to work out Maura’s dishwasher.
Now we get it Jane, when you offered to wash up in 603 you knew she had a washer, very sneaky.
Maura Isles(Sasha Alexander) walks in after explaining to Jane the fact that putting the dishwasher on air dry the fan annoys her. She informs Jane , her mother’s cousin Carlo called he is coming by this evening. Jane is panicked… seems Carlo loves to sue after trip and fall accidents. When Angela Rizzoli arrives (Lorraine Bracco) she also panic’s. They must save Maura and her home from potential lawsuit. Maura thinks they are exaggerating but can’t argue further as the phones ring and its Rizzoli and Isles off to work leaving Angela shaking her head as the opening titles roll.
Angela's cousin can't be that bad right?

Jane is still trying to convince Maura when they arrive at the crime scene. Maura says she will keep an eye on things even though Angela is preparing for the coming Rizzoli Apocalypse.

Jane speaks to Sgt Korsak (Bruce McGill) while Maura examines the body. The victim was a 53 woman not one of the 500 people saw anything. Frankie Rizzoli (Jordan Bridges) arrives they all go to the body. Seems she wasn't killed in the rush but stabbed. Were the sales that important, they all doubt this but who targeted her?

Jane: “Makes me want to give going to malls”
Maura: “You don’t go to Malls”
Jane: “ Mission accomplished”

Back at BPD in the BRIC Nina Holiday (Idara Victor) and Frankie are looking over the store entrance camera footage. They see a guy looking back while everyone else is focused on the store.

Korsak is interviewing the daughter. She explains her mother was ‘Passionate about deals’ seriously you mother is dead and you describe her has passionate about shopping. This seemed a little weak and my only criticism about this episode. So could a fellow shopper have killed her because she got a deal? No they all looked at it like a game.
Korsak shows her the picture of the man in video, the daughter doesn’t recognise him.

Frankie has tracked down the person of interest from the video; Elliott Dutton Jane is a bit sceptical until Nina informs them he has bought a bus ticket out of Boston.

They find Elliott Dutton(Eddie Jemison) but he runs until they yell police, he also seems scared and confused.

At the BPD Jane and Korsak interview him, he believes his boss is after him he doesn’t recognise the victim but he worked nearby and that’s why he was there. His boss attacked him and he was running away. He tells them he has Facial recognition blindness (prosopagnosia also called face blindness, is a cognitive disorder of face perception where the ability to recognize faces ...)
Jane seems sceptical again and Korsak asks if he carries a knife due to being nervous all the time he states no and he didn't stab anyone.

We all knew Jane would go and ask Dr Maura Isles, Maura explains about the condition how they find other ways to tell people apart, their build, their hair, their voice. Seems 2% of population have it in some form. Jane accepts it’s a real condition but thinks he may be lying about having it. Jane asks Maura if they found any blood evidence on his clothes and she states no but proceeds to goggle mouth about where the disorder is studied. Then she gives Maura a strange look

Jane: "give me your lab coat"
Maura: "No"
Jane just stares at her
Maura: "why are you looking at my lab coat?"

Korsak is showing Elliot his photo from the mall near the woman who was stabbed when is walks Dr Kepley aka Jane Rizzoli. A nice way to test if the guy is lying or he seriously doesn’t recognise her. Korsak shows him several pictures of himself and Frankie (who arrested him)… nothing…. when Jane speaks he does recognise her.

No trace of Blood was found on Elliot’s clothes or hands so it seems he did not stab the victim. Korsak and Jane discuss if Elliot was the target and sadly the victim got in the way.

Korsak and Jane decide to go to Elliot’s place of work and talk to his boss.
They arrive at villa cleaners and notice blood outside and inside a very dead boss…….

Maura and crime techs are now on scene and it appears he was stabbed by something similar to the other victim. Did Elliot see the killer, he chased him and in the rush outside the store the poor woman got stabbed. Looks that way…. Elliot mistook his attacker for his boss.
Frankie has a conversation with a new detective, wonder if we will be seeing more of her, unfortunately his mother calls she is stuck in traffic, Jane is busy and she doesn't want Maura to be alone with Cousin Carlo. Mothers always pick the worst times to call. Also let’s advertise features on Maura’s new car while we are at it.

Korsak and Jane take Elliot to a safe house, well apartment that is in an old people’s home. Clever hiding place. He is to have protection for 48 hours while they figure this out.

Maura is entertaining who we assume is Cousin Carlo (Robert Cicchini) alone. He is being charming fortunately Angela arrives , Maura still is not convinced he is out to sue her for an unfortunate mishap , Angela still doesn't trust him.

Jane goes back to see Elliot, he knows it’s her by her walk one leg is longer than the other, one of her heels hits harder to the floor. Jane asks him for anything, he says when stressed his techniques to recognise people don’t work. We get a bit more insight into this condition. Must be very difficult and we see Jane showing empathy towards Elliot.

Next morning Nina and Frankie have been digging…. the dry cleaners wasn't that clean ( sorry couldn't resist) seems a lot of cash only transactions a $750,000 dividend payout .Korsak calls Jane to ask Elliot about it.

Elliot knew something wasn't right but he never dealt with that his boss did. He was a bookkeeper he never did the corporate filings or taxes. He chose to look the other way because he was grateful to have a job. However he noticed the cleaners had a high number of cash transactions. We learn he never left that shop and hadn’t been to any other locations.

The other locations look nothing like cleaners, it’s clearly a front for money laundering. Using cleaners, not one I have heard before. One location a building had a fire yesterday.

Frankie and Korsak check it out, the fire was deliberate but not everything has burned.

Maura is typing on her computer while Jane keeps stomping back and forth in the halls.
Maura: “What are you doing?”
Jane: “How did you know it was me “?
Maura;” You were clomping “
Jane: “You recognised my clomping”
Maura; “No, I heard clomping I looked up and saw my best friend being weird “

I am still laughing…. Jane is paranoid about her leg being shorter; she said Elliot noticed it by her clomping which Maura explains he has developed a good ear. Jane should get that looked as it could damage her back. (Anyone that knows Angie Harmon has suffered terrible with her back). Maura tell her its simple enough to lengthen the other leg

Jane: “I don’t need to be taller Maura men are already afraid of me as it is”
Maura: “And you think it’s because you're tall?”
Yes we all smiled at that Maura really is picking up on that sarcasm. They talk about Carlo’s visit and Jane tries to clomp less out of Maura’s office.

Maura is at home, Angela is clearing up the safety measures she took for Carlo’s visit but on no he is back for a trumpet concert. Luckily Jane arrives and Carlo has made them some Italian donuts called zeppole . Notice everyone walks around Maura’s kitchen as if they live there.
Maura wants Jane to admit she was right as Carlo goes back to the kitchen and in a fall worthy of some footballers he takes a dive (soccer players to those in the U.S) .

In the lab the next day Jane asks if Carlo has called to which Maura’s replies no but they will deal with it when he does. Maura has all the burnt papers laid out and by using an ultraviolet, infra-red dslr camera she can take picture of the burnt paper. She explains the computer analyses the image which can help bring back what is underneath the burn.
After taking a picture and with the computer wizardry we see they were due an IRS audit for Villa cleaners its shareholders and a company called coco ink.

Coco ink is a shell corporation owned by a lawyer who worked for Spencer Romero, Korsak recognises the lawyer's name from his time in the organised crime unit. Frankie recognised Spencer’s name but it’s lost on Nina (remember she is not from Boston). Spencer Romero is a thug and drug dealer from the east side suspected of 10 murders, supposed to do the jobs himself, they have a theory Sims, Elliot’s boss at the cleaners, panicked when he got the IRS note and Spencer killed him. Elliot came in work early caught Romero who didn't know he couldn't ID him and tried to kill him as well. Poor shopper lady just got in the way.

Elliot can't identify him but recognises the click sound. He knew him by another name and recognised he had visited the shop. Saying he smells like he came from a hooker, sorry I it's Hookah bar (whatever that smells like). Jane reluctantly tells him who he really is. She says she is going to get his protection extended.

Back at BPD Korsak tells Jane a defence attorney would pull Elliot apart due to the face recognition blindness. Maybe they can get Romero on the Money laundering, tax invasion. This could mean that Elliot as a witness could get more protection.

Jane goes to tell Elliot who is in the bathroom when she arrives she notices a breeze coming through; Elliot has escaped out the window. Seems he used the protection officer’s phone when Jane looks at the history he was looking up Romero.

Jane returns to BPD, we learn Elliot has not used his cards or taken money from an ATM .He knows they will be looking for him which leaves trains and buses as he wouldn't be able to board a plane. He was heading out on a bus when they first found him.

At the station Jane and Korsak split up and Jane soon see’s Elliot hiding, they walk out and she calls Korsak when Elliot says ‘That hookah bar smell’… Jane struggles with Romero manages to disarm his knife but he tries to strangle her. Elliot shouts out police which distract Romero and Jane hits him in the jaw just as Korsak arrives.

In the dirty robber Carlo walks in with a collar on and is greeted by Jane, she wants him to come clean. He says they are family. Jane states Maura is family. When Maura’s father caused problems Jane shot him. Carlo still isn't backing down.
Maura walks and offers Carlo a chance as well to come clean she has a tablet in her hands and shows Carlo a video from a hidden Camera in her Kitchen of the false fall. He quickly takes the collar off and disappears. Nice job with the hidden camera Maura, like she tells Jane’s she does trust but she is not stupid. She wanted to be right about Carlo and Jane says it’s not easy for her to admit Jane was right.

Maura takes one of the zeppole out of her bag, Jane wants one, Maura calls them Italian doughnut holes and after this they enter into a staring contest over doughnuts… I am sure there will be outtakes to that scene. I liked seeing the playful side of these two.

In summary what we were led to believe at the start wasn't true. It wasn’t sale madness but good old fashion crime. Money laundering that leads to murder. The side story of Carlo was entertaining and once again Rizzoli family drama enters Maura’s home. Like Jane said she is family.

  1. "Hookah bar" not "hooker bar." Hookahs are waterpipes, popular with American hipsters it seems.

  2. Thankyou for the info . I rewatched it and even asked Sam lembeck , who didn't answer my question. Being English we probably call them something else.
