After last week’s disappointing episode I was a little worried that Proof was going to lose my interest even more this week. I was wrong! The episode titled Redemption captured my attention from beginning to end. The episode starts off with Carolyn in the OR trying to save the life of an injured police officer who was shot in the line of duty. Right next to them are other doctors working on the man who shot the officer. Both men flatline and were about to be pronounced dead when the shooter, Mason, comes back to life.
Afterwards Dr. Tyler attends to her patient who is handcuffed to the hospital bed and guarded by what looks to be the whole police department. It’s obvious that Mason isn’t a popular guy nor is Carolyn for helping save his life. This doesn’t get in the way of her job as a doctor or a Near Death Experience (NDE) investigator. She noticed that after Mason came back to life he appeared terrified and she thought he must have had a bad NDE. This made her wonder about what bad life after death experiences would be. That was what Carolyn, Zed, and Janel wanted to find out using Mason as the study case, even though Zed didn’t like it was a great idea due to the fact that Mason was a killer.
Elsewhere Carolyn was dealing with family matters. Her daughter, Sophie, was wanting to go to a party but Carolyn didn’t want her to. Sophie was able to convince Carolyn but it was on the condition that she be home at 11:00 PM, which wasn’t good enough for Sophie. She ended up pretending that she would stay home only to sneak out of the house later. This is very typical teenage TV drama. They found her at the party and she had been drinking. This caused her to say some hurtful comments to her mom about her brother, Will’s death. It seemed that Sophie blamed her mom for his death. We saw a glimpse of what happened last week but I feel like there might be more to the story.
Back to the case, Carolyn learns from Mason that the people that he killed were in his NDE as well as others. There was a young girl that he claimed he didn’t kill. So what does this mean? The information that he gave her was enough for her to try to get to the bottom of it. Janel was able to find a missing person's report that matched Mason’s description of the missing girl. At first, she believes that he did kill her but Mason claims that he was scared of her and that he needs to figure out who killed her in order for him to experience some form of peace. Carolyn takes the information about this missing girl to the officer who was partnered to the deceased policeman. He believed the NDE so he was willing to help her get to the bottom of the information that Mason provided. This ends up leading the police directly to where the missing girl and others where buried. How did Mason know what he knew? Well, some believed that it was because he killed the people they found but Carolyn was willing to look into it further.
It was nice to see Ivan again. He was interested in the new case that Carolyn was working on even though she felt that they were running out of time to solve it. The police were taking Mason back into custody and she wouldn’t be able to help Mason anymore. Ivan suggested that she bring Peter Van Owen on board to help her. She resisted the idea at first but later felt that she didn’t have another choice. Owen goes to the hospital. Once there, Carolyn makes it very clear that she is not his greatest fan, but Owen seems amused that she called him for help. Their dynamic is my favourite in the show. I only wish they’d show more. I enjoy the fact that they are from two completely different backgrounds, one scientific, one supernatural. With the help of Owen, Carolyn was able to piece some of the information together that helped the police uncover what really happened to the girl and the others they had found.
I was happy to see more of Ivan and Peter in this episode. It seems that Carolyn is certainly more open minded now about life after death, compared to the pilot. It was a great fourth episode. I might even say it was their best one yet! What did you think about the episode?
