With just three episodes left I believe we can officially call S2 a bust!
Tonight's episode is almost like a reboot of the season's storylines: Ray is no longer a cop, and is working as muscle for Frank; Paul is "cleared" of the false accusation of soliciting sex from a starlet--but is no longer a bike cop; and, Ani is (fun scene) in sexual harassment "group" PLUS relegated to the property room at the Ventura County S.O.
On top of all this, our "heroes" were re-constituted tonight into a Secret Task Force formed by Kate Davis--who promises each a personal prize for each in return for busting the murder case, and bringing down all of the corrupt officials. Which will propel Kate into a Major Power Player. Finally, Ray learns that his new Boss, Frank, has been playing him all these years--Frank fingered the wrong man as Ray's wife's rapist years ago; and Ray murdered him. Nice way to "own" your personal Cop-now-Muscle, Frank!
The last three episodes are now laid-out as the pay-off for the whole season. Ani will be posing as a High Price Hooker at a High Roller Sex-and-Blackmail party (Yeah! We'll finally get to see Rachel McAdams cleaned-up) in which she's sure to find surprises (her father?) as well as answers to the corruption scam & Caspere's killer. Ray and Frank are about to go mano-a-mano over Frank lying/using Ray all these years. And, Paul is positioned for a crucible: his mother stole ALL of his life's savings, his pregnant girlfriend's mother is about to move in with the happy couple--and Paul still must address his sexuality issues.
Yep, I'm sure Pizzolatto believes tying all of the ends together over the next two or three episodes wraps up his narrative, but it's really doubtful that most viewers will feel anything but relief that this sub-par season is finally over.
Whilst watching the first episode of this season I commented that I really hope Frank wasn't involved in anyway with the rape of Ray's wife as a way to get a cop on his payroll because that would be far too predictable.
Cut to this episode and it seems they have gone down that obvious storytelling path.
Sadly have to agree with you and your predictions for the final few episodes seem pretty solid. I mean the season has a improved a little bit, like I actually care for Ani now and I find her relationship with Ray interesting to watch and I do like that Ray tried to clean himself up. But so much of it seems utterly predictable and Frank is still a big old cliche.
I think like some anthology works, Pizzolatto is following a template, so that True Detective stands for something from season to season and that one can see a continuous indirect line thought/steam of conscienceless running through the narratives. I said from the Pilot on that this was like a personification of the first season and so far I still feel that way, but I am enjoying it. It gets better and better from week to week and I felt the same way last season too!
But I do think it would be a disappointment if the ending is too close to the other season's ending. That would be boring.
I think Frank's role is still undefined. He wants to find the blackmail recording on that missing hard dive, I think his assistant is the one involved in all these pieces.
Speak for yourself. I think the last 2 episodes have been excellent. For me it has really hit its stride at the halfway point, much like season 1 did. Im excited to see how it will play out.
I specially enjoyed this episode very much. All the three detectives doing leg work and finding out more stuff thereby throwing light on the murder - it all felt great watching it unfold.
Quick Ques: Everyone is looking for that compromising hard drive but where is it? Who has it? They tortured and murdered Caspere looking for it. The scene on which Ani and Paul stumble upon in this episode indicates that someone was tied up in that chair, tortured and then murdered - could it have been the girl who took the pics? Could she be the one who took the hard drive and hid it someplace safe?Or as it someone else?
And I finally go back to the question again - who has the hard drive? Could i be Tascha? Remember that she was Caspere's 'girlfriend' at that time and she had also stopped coming to the club.
I really like how things are going. The episode had very good moments, I think it's teh ebst of teh season so far. The cosnequences of the last episode played out really well. I just feel there is gonna be so much cramped in the 3 episodes that are left.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
This season may have started out slow but it looks like now it is getting more and more intense. That beat down scene was great.
ReplyDeleteStill better than 90%+ of TV out there... character development is fantastic.

ReplyDeleteVery intense and heavy episode! Really like the dialogue and the family dynamics the season has been exploring!
